What Purchasing Resumes That Got Interviews Had in Common
These patterns come from real purchasing, procurement, and buyer resumes that reached the interview stage on Huntr, read side by side.
- Few of them started in purchasing. One spent more than a decade buying for an outdoor sports retailer, one began as a paralegal before moving into contracts and sourcing, and one ran client business at creative agencies before a marketing procurement role.
- Every summary named years of experience. The figures ran from 3+ years for an assistant buyer candidate to 25+ for a shared services director, and each sat in the first sentence.
- Spend and savings came as dollar figures. The senior summaries put money up front: a nine-figure spend portfolio in one, six-figure savings in another, and multi-million-dollar agency and P&L portfolios in two more.
- SAP showed up on nearly every skills list. It appeared as SAP ERP, S/4HANA, or Ariba, often next to Oracle, Workday, PeopleSoft, or JDA.
- Skills lists ran long and specific. Most carried 20 to 60 skills, mixing tools like Power BI, advanced Excel, and DocuSign CLM with buying methods like RFP and RFQ work, open-to-buy, and category management.
- They ran close to two pages. The resumes with a measured length came in between 1.8 and 1.9 pages. That fits Huntr's broader finding that two-page resumes do as well as or better than one-page resumes at every level.

Skills for a Purchasing Resume
These bands come from the 3,386 purchasing, procurement, and buyer postings on Huntr that list skills. Put the ones that match your target job in your skills section, then prove them in your bullets. For more ideas by role, browse our resume skills library.
- Core purchasing skills: negotiation (1,362 postings), strategic sourcing (530), vendor management (519), contract management (479), supplier management (456), inventory management (315), and category management (172).
- Tools and systems: Excel (419, plus 207 more as Microsoft Excel), ERP systems (360), Microsoft Office (356), SAP (312), and Power BI (106), with SAP Ariba, Oracle, and Tableau close behind.
- Soft skills: communication (1,086), analytical skills (909), project management (792), stakeholder management (274), and cross-functional collaboration (214). Show them through results, like a supplier you won over or a team you trained. Our list of soft skills has more examples.
Action Verbs for Purchasing Resumes
- Buying: Sourced, Purchased, Ordered, Expedited, Replenished.
- Negotiating: Negotiated, Rebid, Secured, Renegotiated, Consolidated.
- Analyzing: Benchmarked, Forecast, Audited, Tracked, Mapped.
- Leading: Trained, Standardized, Launched, Led, Coached.
Pair each verb with what changed. "Rebid janitorial services with four suppliers and cut the yearly cost 14%" says far more than "Responsible for vendor bids."
Turn a Weak Bullet Into a Strong One
Weak
Responsible for purchasing supplies and working with vendors.
Strong
Rebid MRO supplies with 6 vendors and moved 40 high-use items to a single contract, cutting yearly spend $180K.
The strong version names the category, the number of suppliers, the action, and the dollars saved. Our bullet point generator can draft lines like this from your own work.
Purchasing vs Supply Chain Roles
Purchasing and supply chain jobs overlap, and hiring teams read the two resumes in different ways. Our supply chain resume examples show the other side.
- Scope: Purchasing owns what gets bought, from whom, and at what price. Supply chain covers the whole flow, from forecast to warehouse to customer.
- Metrics: Purchasing resumes lead with savings, spend managed, and supplier performance. Supply chain resumes lead with fill rate, inventory turns, and on-time delivery.
- Career story: Purchasing careers climb from assistant to buyer to procurement or category manager. Supply chain careers move across planning, logistics, and operations.
If you buy for a store or brand, our buyer resume examples go deeper, and our category manager examples cover the next step up.
Get a Purchasing Resume Past the Screeners
These habits help a purchasing resume read cleanly in an ATS and in front of a hiring manager.
- Standard headings: Use Summary, Experience, Skills, and Education so the parser files each section in the right place.
- Tool names as postings write them: Write "SAP Ariba," "Oracle," and "Power BI," and spell out an acronym once, as in "Request for Proposal (RFP)."
- Numbers in digits: Put spend, savings, and supplier counts in plain figures, such as $4M, 12%, or 80+ suppliers.
- Tailor before you apply: Run the posting through our keyword scanner or the job description keyword finder, then use Resume Tailor to match your resume to it. In Huntr's data, tailored resumes turn about 6% of applications into interviews (1 in 17), roughly twice the rate of generic ones.
How to Write a Purchasing Resume
Start with a clean resume format: reverse-chronological, with your latest purchasing role first.
- Header: Name, city and state, phone, email, and LinkedIn. Our resume headline tool can write the title line under your name.
- Summary: Lead with years, your category or industry, and one number for spend or savings. The summary generator can draft one from your experience. Early in your career, a short objective that names your career goals also works.
- Experience: For each role, list what you bought, how much, and what changed. These accomplishment examples show ways to phrase results.
- Education and certifications: A business or supply chain degree is common. CPSM, CPP, CSCP, CPIM, CFCM, and CMRP all appear on the examples above.
Purchasing Resume FAQ
How long should a purchasing resume be?
One page works for assistants and new buyers. Past about five years, two pages is fine: Huntr's data shows two-page resumes do as well as or better than one-page resumes at every level. More on resume length.
Which certifications help a purchasing resume?
The ones on these examples: CPSM from the Institute for Supply Management, CPP from the American Purchasing Society, CSCP and CPIM from ASCM, CFCM for federal contracts, and CMRP for hospital supply chains. List the full name, the issuer, and the year.
How do I write a purchasing resume with no experience?
Lead with anything that involved buying, tracking, or vendors: a stockroom job, a club budget, an internship, or a class project like a supply chain simulation. Add Excel and any ERP exposure, and apply to purchasing assistant and coordinator roles first. For the wider search, see how to land your dream job.
What skills should a purchasing resume include?
Negotiation, strategic sourcing, vendor and contract management, and inventory management lead the postings, along with Excel, ERP systems, and SAP. Match your list to the posting you are applying to.
Methodology
The verified senior procurement manager example blends three real resumes from Huntr users who reached the interview stage for procurement and strategic sourcing roles. Each source passed a check on how steadily they tracked their search, and each resume was attached to the job where the interview happened. Names, employers, schools, and contact details are changed, and every figure is moved to a nearby round number, so no line matches a real person's resume. The companies in the green callout are real places where those resumes reached interviews.
The other 17 examples are illustrative. Each is built from real purchasing job postings in Huntr's system, and the purple callout above each one gives the posting count and the skills those listings name.
Conclusion
Across the real resumes and the postings, the pattern holds: purchasing hiring teams want to see what you bought, how much of it, and what you saved. The resumes that reached interviews put years and a dollar figure in the first lines, named SAP or another ERP, and backed their bullets with numbers. Huntr's research puts the average search at about 90 days. In my view, tailoring each resume to the posting and applying to 10 to 20 jobs a week is the best use of that time.
