The Best Time of Year to Look for a Job, Based on Nearly 2 Million Applications

September and October are the data-backed best time to job search, but also always be job searching…

January gets a lot of attention in job search advice, and everyone talks about the summer and November and December holiday slump. But here we have a definitive answer from our large dataset on the best time of year to look for work. Some of it is surprising and against conventional wisdom.

Job-search activity ran above its yearly trend from July through October in each of the three full years we reviewed with September ranking first.

October led interviews in 2025, with about 32% of October applicants getting an interview. February led the hotter first half of 2026.

December applicant volume fell 12% below trend, but the interview rate held at 3.6%, level with the 2025 average of 3.5%.

Key Findings

• The main job-search season ran from September through October, not January.

1. Activity Peaks in the Fall

Applicant volume peaked in September and October, at 8 to 9% above the 2025 trend. July also ran above it. That trend was consistent in 2023 and 2024 as well, with September on top each year.

January was ordinary once you adjust for our larger early-year user base, at 2% below trend. So more people are signing-up but less are active. December was the clear low point, at 12% below trend in 2025 and 17% below across all three years.

2. October Led Interviews

About 32.4% of October applicants got at least one interview, the highest share in 2025. January and July followed at about 29%. June and December were at the bottom. About 25% of their applicants got an interview.

3. The Busiest Months Aren’t the Best Months to Apply

Applicant volume and interview rates don’t move together. Volume peaked in September and October, about 8 to 9% above the 2025 trend, then fell to 12% below trend by December. The interview rate did not follow that pattern.

While October had high volume (8% above trend) and high interview rates (5.1%, the highest rate of the year), September drew almost the same activity levels and converted at 3.9%. Volume alone did not track with higher interview rates.

December volume fell 12% below trend, but 3.6% of December applications still reached an interview, about the same as the average of 3.5% for 2025. November was the quiet winner, we saw below-trend volume with a 4.2% interview rate. So those that kept searching seemed to be rewarded. January was the letdown: ordinary volume and the lowest interview rate of the year at 2.7%.

4. The Best Day to Apply

Another interesting note- Applications saved on Tuesday had the highest recorded interview rate in 2025, at 3.9% per application. Wednesday and Thursday came close.

Not too surprisingly, weekend applications trailed the rest. Saturday's interview rate was 2.5% and Sunday's was 2.6%, about a third below midweek.

Weekends also drew about half the weekday volume.

We measured the day a user saved the job, in UTC, so a late Friday save in the United States can count as Saturday. As always, treat these findings as trends and patterns.

How to use these findings in your job search

1. Apply when a strong role opens, as soon as you can. Do not wait for a month on the calendar. Applying early correlates to much higher interview rates.
2. If you have the luxury of time, August through October tends to be the best time to apply
3. February led the first half of 2026 so don’t feel like you have missed the boat if you don’t get an interview in January.
4. Send applications during the week. Weekend applications had about a third fewer recorded interviews per application.
5. Do not get too in your head about the time of year, quieter months like November had decent interview rates too. Tailoring your resume to match the job description, title matching, applying early, and applying through job boards and sites with the highest interview rates played a bigger role in application success than the time of year.

Methodology

Data used

Huntr reviewed two sets of product data. The activity analysis covers January 2023 through December 2025. The outcome analysis covers 1,994,555 applications from 40,991 users in ClickHouse, with saved-job dates from October 1, 2024 through June 30, 2026. We ran the analysis on August 25, 2026.

One dataset measures how many people used Huntr each month. The other holds saved jobs and the latest applied and interviewed status that users recorded for each job.

How we calculated the activity trend

We counted the unique people who added a job to Huntr’s job search tracker each month on the web app, the Chrome extension, or the mobile app, from January 2023 through December 2025. Raw use rose in some years and fell in others. We fit one straight trend line to each full year, then compared each month with that line. An index of 100 means the month matched its yearly trend. A value of 107 means activity ran 7% above trend. We then averaged the three yearly results for each calendar month.

How we calculated monthly outcomes

We counted each person once per calendar month and year. Interview reach means the share of applicants with at least one job marked interviewed.

The outcome chart reports 2025, the only complete calendar year in the extract. The first half of 2026 ran higher in every month, with February at 34.6% interview reach. The last quarter of 2024 ran lower. The month is the date a user saved the job in UTC, not the exact date they applied. The status fields show the latest outcome present when we ran the query.

How we calculated day-of-week rates

We grouped 2025 applications by the day of the week the user saved the job, in UTC, and computed the share marked interviewed. Weekdays each carried 166,212 to 199,084 applications. Saturday carried 98,593 and Sunday 93,309.

Who is in the data

• Location: 53.1% of applications in the full 2025 sample had no country value. Among applications with a country, 67.4% pointed to the United States, 8.6% to Canada, 4.3% to the United Kingdom, and 2.7% to Germany.
• Job function: Huntr’s title map matched 60.8% of applications. Software and IT made up 28.5% of all applications, Creative and Design 6.1%, and Data and Analytics 3.5%.
• Work setting: remote-only jobs made up 23.2% of applications, onsite-only 13.7%, and hybrid-only 11.0%. Many jobs had no clear work-setting label.
• Target level: among resume authors who set a target level in 2025, 45.4% chose entry level, 31.8% senior, and 22.8% mid-level.

Limits

This research describes Huntr users, not every job seeker or open job. Users record their own applications, interviews, and offers, and some do not update every result. Month-level patterns show a correlation, not a cause. They can help people plan a search, but they cannot predict results.
