For our Q1 2026 job search trends research we counted the skills named across a dozen engineering disciplines and split each by how firmly employers ask for it. Sam Wright ran the numbers. The two skills every engineering discipline demands
Pooled across 5,497 postings for a dozen engineering disciplines, from mechanical and civil to process and quality, one pattern cuts across all of them: the most-named skills are not tools but communication and project management. The tools matter, but each belongs to a discipline, so none tops the list the way the universal skills do. Software tools like Python and SQL appear because quality and test engineers sit in this pool. Each row shows a skill's share of the postings and how firmly they ask for it:
Ranked by share of 5,497 engineering postings
- Communication: 29.1 percent of postings name it as 'communication skills' and another 20.4 percent as 'communication'. The most-demanded skill in engineering, required far more than preferred.
- Project management: 26.5 percent, the second most-named skill in the pool, ahead of every engineering tool.
- Problem-solving: 17.2 percent under the hyphenated spelling, plus 10.4 percent more under 'problem solving'. The core engineering verb.
- Analytical skills: 14.1 percent, required in 692 of its 774 mentions.
- Collaboration: 10.5 percent, with teamwork named in another 10.4 percent.
- AutoCAD: 8.7 percent, the top discipline tool, yet preferred more often than required (238 to 191). Employers expect to train it.
- Data analysis: 8.2 percent, rising across every discipline.
- Quality assurance: 7.6 percent, required 381 to 26, driven by the quality engineers in the pool.
- Mechanical engineering: 7.6 percent as a named domain skill, with mechanical design in another 5.5 percent.
- SolidWorks: 6.6 percent, split close to even at 182 required to 161 preferred.
Read top to bottom and the lesson for an engineering resume is plain. The discipline tools, AutoCAD and SolidWorks, are the skills employers most often mark preferred rather than required, so they qualify you without setting you apart. What gates the role is communication and project management. List your tools, but lead with a project you ran and a result you can defend.
What engineers who landed interviews listed
Our resume data shows the mirror image, and a familiar trap. Among the 17 people in our records who reached an engineering interview, the skills they listed most were tools: AutoCAD on 8 resumes, MATLAB on 7, SolidWorks and Revit close behind. Project management and problem-solving appeared, but well down the list. Seventeen resumes is a small group, so read it as a caution rather than a rule: engineers instinctively lead with software, the very skills postings treat as preferred. The tools belong on the page, but the communication and project evidence has to come first.
