Resume Examples and Guide For

System Administrator

Sections

A systems administrator resume has to prove one thing before anything else: the machines you ran stayed up. The examples here come from real people who reached systems administrator interviews, plus what thousands of job postings say the role actually asks for. Uptime, identity work, and clean certs carry the page. A GitHub link is a minority signal, not a requirement. For the cross-role set, see our real resume examples.

Start with the numbers: 561 systems administrator resumes sit in Huntr's database, and 13 of them reached interviews, which is the verified basis for the example below. That example is an anonymized composite, who covers IT careers for Huntr, and grounded in our research. Names, employers, and schools were swapped so no example is a real person, and the labeled examples that follow are built from real systems administrator postings.

What Systems Administrator Resumes That Reached Interviews Shared

We pulled 19 resumes from 13 people who reached systems administrator interviews on Huntr, and we counted the skills across 2,570 real postings. The figures in this section come from those two pulls, each noted where it lands.

  • One Linux admin in this cohort had also taught ESL and worked as a cellular therapy lab tech before the interview. The resume still read clean because it led with the machines kept running, not the winding path there.
  • Communication showed up in 39% of the 2,570 postings, ahead of any single technology. Systems admins talk to every team, so the resume should say so.
  • Troubleshooting led the hard skills at 33%, then Linux at 27% and Active Directory at 26%. Those three cover most of what a job description screens for.
  • 17 of 19 resumes in the interview cohort opened with a written summary. That is where the strong ones stated uptime and the size of what they ran.
  • The median resume ran about 1.6 pages, and roughly 15 of 19 stayed at two pages or under. Two pages is fine for an admin with a decade of infrastructure behind them.
  • Virtualization topped the cohort's own skill lists, and VMware appeared on 16% of postings. If you run ESXi or Hyper-V, name the version and the host count.
  • Certs matter more here than in most roles. Red Hat, Azure Administrator, MCSE, Network+, and Security+ all showed up in the cohort. Put the ones you hold near the top.
  • Git appeared on only 7 of 19 resumes, a minority. A GitHub link helps a scripting-heavy admin but is not expected, so do not force one to look modern.
  • Windows with Active Directory (26%) and Linux (27%) split the field almost evenly across postings. Pick the stack you actually run and go deep instead of claiming both thinly.

Why it works: This composite treats the job as running infrastructure, not answering tickets. It leads with one number, then ties every bullet to servers, endpoints, or uptime, and names the platforms administrators actually run. See the methodology for how we build these.

The summary: One core metric leads, 99.95% uptime across production infrastructure, followed by 8 years and the platforms run: Windows Server, VMware, and Active Directory. Scale first, adjectives never.

The experience: Every role carries scope with a number: 2,000+ endpoints and 500+ users at a financial institution, 500+ Windows Servers across 20+ managed-services clients, cloud migrations that cut operational costs about 30%, and PowerShell automation that trimmed migration time about 35%. Each role reads as systems owned, not tasks assigned.

The skills: A stack a hiring manager would recognize: Windows Server, Active Directory, VMware, Hyper-V, Microsoft 365, Azure, Entra ID, PowerShell, and Intune, plus Veeam, disaster recovery, and networking, backed by Security+, VCP-DCV, and Azure Administrator.

The rest are illustrative examples. They are built from Huntr's best-practice guidance and the skills real systems administrator postings ask for, so you can see how each flavor of the role reads on paper.

What it shows: Two years can still name real scope: a 400-user Windows and Linux environment, Active Directory and Microsoft 365 handled day to day, and basic PowerShell. A support technician role bridges the jump, and A+ with Network+ stand in for the years a longer career would show. No GitHub line, because the work does not need one.

The summary: The summary names one number, a 400-user Windows and Linux environment held at 99.5% uptime, then the day-to-day tools: Active Directory, Microsoft 365, and basic PowerShell. Two years, stated plainly.

The experience: The bullets carry scope a hiring manager can weigh: 12 Windows servers and 30 Linux hosts, 25 new hires a month in Active Directory, and 15 PowerShell scripts that cut onboarding from 40 minutes to 10. A prior support role at 40 tickets a day bridges the jump.

The skills: A tight, honest stack: Active Directory, Windows Server, Microsoft 365, PowerShell, DNS, DHCP, and Group Policy, with A+ and Network+ standing in for the years a longer career would show.

What it shows: The dual scope is the pitch: the network and the servers behind it for an 800-user firm, with TCP/IP, VLANs, DNS, and Windows Server all in hand. CCNA sits next to Network+ and Security+, which is what a role touching both sides expects. No GitHub, since the work is infrastructure, not code.

The summary: The summary sells dual scope: the network and the servers behind it for an 800-user firm across three sites, held at 99.9% uptime.

The experience: The bullets cover both sides: end-of-life switches and firewalls replaced with under 30 minutes of downtime each, a VLAN and DNS redesign that segmented voice, data, and guest traffic, and VPN tunnels that cut branch latency 35%, alongside a six-host VMware cluster and Active Directory.

The skills: A both-sides stack: TCP/IP, VLANs, DNS, DHCP, Cisco IOS, firewalls, and Windows Server, with CCNA next to Network+ and Security+, which is what a role touching both expects.

Skills for a Systems Administrator Resume

We counted the skills across 2,570 real systems administrator postings on Huntr. Pull from what employers actually ask for, then keep only what the specific job description names.

Core: communication (39% of postings), troubleshooting (33%), problem-solving (18%), documentation (16%), system administration (13%), networking (14%). The soft skills top the list here, so do not bury them under acronyms.

Platforms: Linux (27%), Active Directory (26%), Windows (15%), Windows Server (11%), VMware (16%), Virtualization (4%). Name the stack you run and, for virtualization, the product and host count.

Tools and scripting: PowerShell (14%), scripting (14%), Python (13%), Bash (7%), Ansible (9%), plus DNS (11%), DHCP (8%), Microsoft 365 (8%), and Azure (8%). Automation reads as maturity, so show what you have scripted.

How to use this: The interview cohort listed a median near 34 skills, mixed across platforms, tools, and soft skills. A list that is all acronyms with no communication or documentation reads narrow; a list with no platform depth reads thin.

Action Verbs for Systems Administrator Resumes

Uptime and reliability: maintained, sustained, recovered, restored, hardened. Use these where a percentage or a time can follow: sustained 99.97% uptime across a 1,200-user fleet.

Build and automate: deployed, migrated, automated, scripted, provisioned. Pair with counts: migrated 10,000 users to Microsoft 365; automated patching across 400 servers.

Secure and control: patched, remediated, enforced, audited, configured. These prove control: remediated 300 vulnerabilities in one quarter; enforced Group Policy across 40 sites.

The weak version of a sysadmin bullet starts with "responsible for." The strong version names the system, what you did to it, and the number that shows it held.

Turn a Weak Bullet Into a Strong One

Weak

Responsible for maintaining servers, managing user accounts, and providing technical support to end users.

Strong

Maintained 60 Windows and Linux servers at 99.95% uptime, automated onboarding for 1,600 accounts in PowerShell, and cut ticket volume 22% by fixing the top three recurring issues.

Same job, different proof. The strong bullet answers what every hiring manager wants to know: how big, what you changed, and did it stay up.

Systems Administrator vs Help Desk on a Resume

Scope: a help desk role resolves tickets for users; a systems administrator owns the servers, identity, and infrastructure those tickets sit on. Metrics: help desk resumes prove resolution rate and response time, while sysadmin resumes prove uptime, host counts, and migrations run. Narrative: if your bullets describe building and automating the systems rather than answering requests about them, title yourself as the admin you already are.

Getting a Systems Administrator Resume Through the Screeners

Screeners match strings before a person reads a word. Keep the title standard (Systems Administrator, not IT Wizard), spell out each platform the posting names (Active Directory, VMware, Microsoft 365), and match acronyms exactly, since AD, DNS, and DHCP are string matches, not concepts. Run the posting through Huntr's keyword scanner to see which skills you are missing, then let Resume Tailor fold the matches into your resume. Tailored resumes reach interviews at about twice the rate of generic ones in our data.

Systems Administrator Resume FAQ

How long should a systems administrator resume be?

Two pages is fine. In our interview cohort the median ran about 1.6 pages and roughly 15 of 19 stayed at two pages or under. An admin with ten years of infrastructure can use the room. Cut filler, never cut a stack you actually ran.

Do you need certifications to get systems administrator interviews?

They help more here than in most roles. Red Hat, Azure Administrator, MCSE, Network+, and Security+ all showed up in the interview cohort. Put the ones you hold near the top, but do not wait on a cert to apply if your uptime and migrations already tell the story.

Do I need a GitHub on a systems administrator resume?

No. Git appeared on only 7 of 19 resumes in the cohort, a minority. A GitHub link helps a scripting-heavy Linux or cloud admin who has real automation to show, but a Windows or network admin rarely needs one. Do not add an empty profile to look current.

What skills should a systems administrator put on a resume?

Start from the posting. Across 2,570 postings the constants are communication, troubleshooting, Linux, Active Directory, VMware, and PowerShell, plus DNS, DHCP, and Microsoft 365. The cohort listed a median near 34 skills. Match the list to the stack the job names, not to a round number.

Methodology

The verified example is a composite of real resumes attached to jobs that reached the interview stage for systems administrator roles on Huntr: 19 resumes from 13 people. We swap names, employers, and schools for comparable real ones and check every swap against our database so no example points to a person. Where one resume anchors an example we shift its numbers to nearby values; the interview companies we name are real and never changed.

The other examples are illustrative, labeled as such on every callout, and they make no interview claim. Their skills come from the systems administrator postings cited above, and their shape follows what the verified resume does: one scope figure in the summary, a stack and a number in every bullet, and certs read the way a hiring manager reads them.

Conclusion

Across the interview cohort the pattern held: one scope number up top, bullets that name the stack and the uptime, certs near the top, and a GitHub line only when there is real automation behind it. The path in did not have to be clean. A lab tech and an ESL teacher reached these interviews by leading with the machines they kept running. That is the whole job on paper.
