Resume Examples and Guide For

Help Desk

Sections

A help desk resume is judged on two numbers: how fast you close a ticket and how often you close it right the first time. This page walks from an entry technician to a help desk manager, with one example built from real resumes that reached interviews and nineteen more tuned to what IT support postings actually screen for.

The lead example is an anonymized composite of IT support resumes that reached the interview stage, drawn from the 557 such resumes Huntr tracks in its system. It was reviewed by Rennie Haylock, Huntr's Head of Career Strategy, alongside our research. Names, employers, and schools are swapped so no example is a real person, and the examples that follow are labeled and built on real IT support postings.

What Help Desk Resumes That Reached Interviews Shared

We pulled resumes from 11 people who landed IT support interviews on Huntr, then checked their traits against 8,071 real IT support postings. The percentages in this section come from those two sets.

  • One resume in this set carried a Certified Medical Assistant credential and still earned IT support interviews. That person crossed over from clinical work, not computing. Career changers show up here often.
  • Troubleshooting and communication tie for the top posting skill, each on 49% of the 8,071 listings that name skills. The job is half fixing things and half explaining the fix.
  • Customer service sits on 43% of postings. Help desk work is a service job with a keyboard, and the resumes that get read say so.
  • Windows appears on 24% of postings and Active Directory on 22%. Name the stack you run, not just "operating systems."
  • macOS or Mac support shows up on 20% of postings. Mixed-fleet shops are common; if you support both, say both.
  • Ticketing systems (5%), ServiceNow (4%), and Okta (4%) are lower-frequency but specific. When a posting names one, matching it is cheap and it clears keyword screens.
  • Certs are common in this cohort but scattered: CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+, Google IT Support, and Microsoft MCSA all appeared. No single cert dominates, so earn the one the posting asks for.
  • These resumes ran about 1.6 pages with a median of 4 job titles. Two pages is fine for IT support once you have real ticket history to show.

Why it works: It reads like a service log, not a job description. Every role ties support work to a rate or a count, so a hiring manager sees speed and reliability before they finish the first bullet. See the methodology for how we build these.

The summary: Three lines that name the specialty (IT support and cloud), the identity stack (Okta, Google Workspace), and one credential, without a paragraph of adjectives.

The experience: The bullets carry the desk in numbers: 95% of requests answered within 15 minutes, 1,000+ users managed in Okta and Google Workspace, onboarding time down 30%, access tickets down 25%, and a documentation system that cut resolution time by 25%.

The skills: The stack a posting would screen for: identity and access, endpoint management, ticketing systems, Active Directory, Microsoft 365, and remote support, backed by CompTIA A+ and Network+ and a Google IT Support certificate.

The rest are labeled illustrative examples: each is built on a real set of IT support postings and the skills those postings name, so you can see how every rung and corner of the desk reads on paper.

Skills for a Help Desk Resume

We counted the skills across 8,071 real IT support postings on Huntr. Pull from what employers ask for, then keep only what the specific job description names.

Core: troubleshooting (49% of postings), communication (49%), customer service (43%), problem-solving (28%), technical support (25%), documentation (11%). These are the constants; every help desk posting expects some mix of them.

Platforms: Windows (24%), Active Directory (22%), macOS or Mac (20%), Microsoft 365 (18%), Google Workspace (11%), networking (10%). Name the stack you have actually run, and if you support a mixed fleet, list both operating systems.

Tools: ticketing systems (5%), ServiceNow (4%), Okta (4%). Lower-frequency but exact string matches. When a posting names one, mirror the name; a screener reads ServiceNow and Zendesk as different words, not the same idea.

How to use this: The resumes that got read listed a median of about 25 skills, mixed across all three bands, and matched to the posting. A list that is all tools with no service skills, or all service with no stack, reads half-finished.

Action Verbs for Help Desk Resumes

Resolution: resolved, closed, fixed, restored, cleared. Use these where a rate or a time can follow: resolved 88% of tickets without escalation; cleared the backlog in under a day.

Reliability: maintained, held, monitored, imaged, provisioned. These prove the desk stayed up: held device uptime at 99%; provisioned 30 new hires a month with zero access errors.

Improvement: cut, automated, documented, standardized, trained. Pair with a number: cut printer tickets by 30%; trained 6 Tier 1 techs; automated 15 routine tasks.

The weak version of every help desk bullet starts with "responsible for." The strong version starts with what you fixed and ends with how fast or how often.

Turn a Weak Bullet Into a Strong One

Weak

Responsible for answering help desk tickets and assisting users with hardware and software issues.

Strong

Closed 40 tickets a day for 400 users at a 70% first-contact rate, resetting accounts in Active Directory in under 15 minutes and cutting repeat password tickets by a quarter with 20 how-to articles.

Same job, real evidence. The strong bullet answers the three questions a hiring manager has about any technician: how much volume, how fast, and how often it stuck.

Help Desk vs Technical Support on a Resume

Scope: a help desk role runs the front line of tickets, resets, and routine fixes; a technical support role goes deeper into a product or system and often owns harder, longer cases. Metrics: help desk resumes prove volume and first-contact resolution; technical support resumes prove root-cause work and case complexity. Narrative: if your bullets are less about ticket count and more about diagnosing the same product every day, you may be underselling a technical support resume with a help desk title.

Get a Help Desk Resume Through the Screeners

Screeners match strings before a person reads a word. Keep the title standard (Help Desk Technician or IT Support Specialist, not IT Guru), spell out each tool the way the posting does (ServiceNow, Okta, Active Directory), and match both operating systems if you support both, since Windows and macOS are separate keywords. Run the posting through Huntr's keyword scanner to see what you are missing, then let Resume Tailor work the matches into your bullets. Tailored resumes convert to interviews at about twice the rate of generic ones in our data.

Help Desk Resume FAQ

What should a help desk resume put first?

Lead with resolution. The two numbers that get a help desk resume read are first-contact resolution rate and average time to close. Put one of them in the summary and the rest in your bullets, tied to a real user count.

Do you need certifications for a help desk job?

They help, but no single cert is required. In this cohort CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+, Google IT Support, and Microsoft MCSA all appeared, and none dominated. Earn the one the posting names first, then add the next as you specialize.

How do I write a help desk resume with no IT experience?

Reframe the service work you have already done. This set includes someone who crossed over from clinical work on a Certified Medical Assistant credential. Any job with customers, troubleshooting, or systems gives you bullets; write them with numbers and add a CompTIA A+ or a Google IT Support certificate to signal intent.

What skills should a help desk resume list?

Start from the posting. Across 8,071 IT support postings the constants are troubleshooting, communication, and customer service, then the platform stack (Windows, Active Directory, macOS, Microsoft 365) and any named tool (ServiceNow, Okta, a ticketing system). The resumes that got read listed a median of about 25, matched to each job.

Methodology

The verified example is a composite of real resumes attached to jobs that reached the interview stage for IT support roles on Huntr. We swap the name, employers, and school for comparable real ones and check every swap against our database so no example points to a person. Where the composite blends several resumes we keep the figures as written; where one resume anchors a detail we shift its numbers to nearby values. The interview companies we name, Stripe and Egnyte, are real and never changed.

The illustrative examples are labeled on every callout and make no interview claim. Each is built from a stated number of real IT support postings and the skills those postings name; the companies in them are representative, not specific employers. Their shape follows what the verified example does: one scope number in the summary, a rate or a count in every bullet, and tools an employer would recognize by name.

Conclusion

Across these resumes the pattern held: a resolution number up top, bullets that count tickets, users, and minutes, tools named the way postings name them, and certs earned to fit the job rather than collected. None of it needs a computer science degree or a decade on the desk. It needs proof that when something broke, you fixed it fast and it stayed fixed.

Build yours in Huntr's resume builder, then run every application through Resume Tailor so the posting's exact keywords make it onto the page.
