Resume Examples and Guide For

Software Developer

Sections

A software developer resume gets one question in front of it: can you write code that ships and stays up? These software developer resume examples come from people who answered yes on real products, drawn from what 21,712 job postings and a set of interview-stage resumes say about the developers who got a callback. Every good one names a stack, a thing that shipped, and a number that held.

Huntr's system holds 1,345 software developer resumes, and the lead composite is anonymized from the 23 that reached interviews, the verified basis for this page. That group of 23 is the real evidence here, not a stock template. The page was reviewed by Sam Wright, Huntr's Head of Career Strategy, and draws on our wider research. Names, employers, and schools are swapped so no example is a real person, and the stack-specific models below are labeled and built from what 21,712 real software developer postings ask for.

What Software Developer Resumes That Reached Interviews Had in Common

We looked at 28 resumes from 23 people who reached software developer interviews on Huntr, and checked them against 21,712 developer postings. The figures in this section describe those two sets, not the whole field.

  • One person here came from nuclear physics research and a part-time software job, then landed a full software developer interview once the resume showed shipped code instead of only a PhD. Developer careers often begin next to the work, not inside it.
  • The cohort is small and we say so: 23 people, 28 resume rows. Read these numbers as a picture of interview-stage developer resumes, not a rule for the industry.
  • 82% of these resumes open with a summary. A developer summary earns its lines when it states the years, the stack, and one thing that shipped, not a mission statement.
  • Length was rarely the problem people fear. About 92% ran two pages or under and the median sat near a page and a half. A second page is fine when it holds real work.
  • The median resume listed close to 28 skills. That only works when the list tracks the posting: JavaScript shows up in 44% of postings, Java in 33%, and Python in 32%, so mirror the job, do not dump every language you have touched.
  • Three jobs was the median work history. Depth on each role read stronger than a long trail of short stints.
  • The stack these resumes actually leaned on was fuller than one language: Docker, Python, PostgreSQL, TypeScript, Java, and MySQL showed up most, a container-and-database picture.
  • Certifications barely moved the needle. They appeared rarely and scattered, a Security Plus here, a cloud badge there. For developers a live GitHub and shipped projects did more than a certificate.
  • Postings still reward fundamentals over buzzwords: Git in 22%, Agile in 19%, communication in 19%, problem-solving in 17%. The soft skills are on a fifth of the postings, so they are not filler.

Why it works: This resume reads like someone who owns services in production, not someone who closes tickets. The summary states the stack and the uptime, and each role adds a system that shipped and kept running. See the methodology for how it is built.

The summary: Two lines that name the stack (.NET, C#, AWS), the years, and one hard number: 99.95% uptime across production services. No adjective pile, and no separate projects block, because the shipped work carries the proof.

The experience: The bullets carry systems and results: a 30-plus service backend at 99.95% uptime, deploy times cut 80% with GitHub Actions and Docker, search that dropped document collection from 60 minutes to about 10 seconds, a shared DTO library across 7 services, and 90% of issues resolved the day they landed. Ownership, counted.

The skills: A backend-heavy full spread: C#, .NET Core, ASP.NET, Java, and Spring Boot up front; SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Redis, and ElasticSearch on the data layer; Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, and CI/CD to run it. The GitHub line sits in the contact block because for this role a reader expects one.

The rest are labeled stack models. Each is built from Huntr's best-practice guidance and the skills that real software developer postings name, so you can see how a given stack reads on the page. None claims an interview. Each carries a GitHub line and lets the shipped-project number live inside a work bullet, the way this cohort's resumes did.

What it shows: The reframe carries the resume. Eight years of engineering read as discipline once the pivot gets literal: she automated a QA rig in Python and built the dashboard 30 engineers used, then finished a 700-hour program and shipped four production apps. Now an inventory tool that cut a stock count from 3 hours to 20 minutes and a legacy codebase raised from 12% to 70% coverage. The old title stays honest.

Skills for a Software Developer Resume

We counted the skills across 21,712 real software developer postings on Huntr. Pull from what employers ask for, then keep only what the specific job description names. A developer list should touch languages, methods, and delivery, not just one stack.

Languages: JavaScript (in 44% of postings), Java (33%), Python (32%), C# (30%), TypeScript (19%), plus C++ (11%) and the frameworks that ride on them. Pair a language with the framework you actually shipped in.

Web and data: SQL (28%), React (25%), CSS (21%), HTML (20%), Angular (15%), Node.js (11%), PostgreSQL, and MySQL. Name the framework the posting names; React and Angular are not interchangeable to a screener.

Delivery and fundamentals: Git (22%), Agile (19%), communication (19%), problem-solving (17%), Docker (13%), Kubernetes (10%), AWS (10%), and CI/CD (10%). These are what turn code into shipped, running software.

How to use this: Interview-stage resumes listed a median near 28 skills spread across all three groups. A list that is all languages with no delivery, or all tools with no fundamentals, reads half-finished. Show the whole path, then cut anything the posting does not mention.

Action Verbs for Software Developer Resumes

Build: built, shipped, engineered, implemented, developed. Use these where a stack and a result can follow: engineered a 30-plus service backend at 99.95% uptime.

Improve: cut, reduced, sped up, optimized, migrated. These carry a before and after: cut deploy times 80%; migrated 3 billion rows with zero downtime.

Own: owned, maintained, ran, reviewed, mentored. Pair with scope: own three services at 40M requests a day; reviewed 900-plus pull requests a year.

The weak version of a developer bullet starts with "worked on." The strong version names the stack, the thing that shipped, and the number that moved.

Turn a Weak Bullet Into a Strong One

Weak

Worked on backend services and helped improve performance and reliability using various technologies.

Strong

Engineered a 30-plus microservice backend in .NET Core at 99.95% uptime, cut deploy times 80% with Docker and GitHub Actions, and dropped search collection from 60 minutes to about 10 seconds.

Same work, different evidence. The strong bullet answers the three questions a hiring engineer asks: what stack, what shipped, and what number changed.

Software Developer vs Full Stack Developer on a Resume

Scope: a software developer resume can go deep on one layer, a service, a data pipeline, or a client; a full stack developer resume has to prove reach across the whole app, browser to database, in the same feature. Evidence: a software developer bullet can live entirely in the backend or the frontend, while a full stack bullet should name a UI framework and a data store together. Signal: if your bullets cluster on one layer and go deep, the plainer software developer title reads stronger; if every feature you write touches UI, an API, and a database, the full stack title fits.

Getting a Software Developer Resume Read by the Screener

Screeners match strings, not concepts. Spell the stack the way the posting does (C#, not "C Sharp"; PostgreSQL, not "Postgres" if they wrote PostgreSQL), keep the title standard (Software Developer, not Code Wizard), and put the language and framework names in both the summary and the skills list so a keyword pass finds them. Run the posting through Huntr's keyword scanner to see the terms you are missing, then let Resume Tailor fold the matches into your bullets. Tailored resumes reach interviews at about twice the rate of generic ones in our data.

Software Developer Resume FAQ

How long should a software developer resume be?

Short and dense. About 92% of the resumes in this interview set ran two pages or under, and the median sat near a page and a half, with three jobs. Cut old roles before you cut a shipped project. A tight page and a half beats a padded two. Huntr's broader data on resume length points the same way.

For this role, it helps a lot. Every offer-stage resume in this set carried a GitHub link and showed the tech through work bullets rather than a separate projects block. Link a repo you would be glad to have read, even a small one, and put it in the contact line.

What skills should a software developer put on a resume?

Cover languages, web and data, and delivery, then match the posting. Across 21,712 postings the constants are JavaScript (44%), Java (33%), Python (32%), C# (30%), SQL (28%), React (25%), and Git (22%). The interview set listed a median near 28 skills, spread across all three groups.

Can I get software developer interviews without a computer science degree?

Yes. This set includes a former researcher who pivoted in and reached a full interview once the resume showed shipped code. Most resumes carried a Bachelor of Science, but a certificate or bootcamp line next to a public repo and quantified projects did the work when the degree was not in CS. Certifications were rare and did not decide these interviews.

Methodology

The verified example is a composite of real resumes attached to jobs that reached the interview and offer stage for software developer roles on Huntr. We swap names, employers, and schools for comparable real ones and check every swap against our database, so no example points back to a person. Where several resumes blend into one example we keep figures as written; where a single resume anchors a bullet we shift its numbers to nearby values. The interview and offer companies we name are real and left unchanged.

The stack-specific examples are models, marked as such on every callout, and they make no interview claim. Their skills come from the postings data cited above, and their shape follows the verified set: the stack and one scope number in the summary, a result in every bullet, a GitHub link, and the shipped-project figure kept inside a work bullet rather than split into a separate section.

Conclusion

Across these interview-stage resumes the pattern held: name the stack up top with one number that shows scale, write bullets where code shipped and a metric moved (uptime, latency, deploy time, error rate), keep a public repo in the contact line, and stop at the length the work earns. None of it needs a famous logo or a certificate. It needs proof that you can build software and keep it running. Sharpen your skills list, and browse more real examples.

Draft yours in Huntr's resume builder, then run each application through Resume Tailor so the stack on your resume matches the stack in the posting.
