Resume Examples and Guide For

QA Engineer

Sections

A QA engineer resume answers one question: can you keep bad code out of production? The examples here show how real testers proved it, from a first QA role to a suite of 1,200 automated tests, and what 2,740 job postings say the people hiring actually want.

Huntr's system holds 376 QA engineer resumes, and this page is grounded in that pool rather than stock advice. The lead example is an anonymized composite drawn from resumes that reached QA engineer interviews; the verified set is small but real. It was checked by Sam Wright, Huntr's Head of Career Strategy, alongside our research. Names, employers, and schools were changed so no example maps to a real person, and the labeled models that follow are built from real QA engineer postings.

What the QA Posting Data and Interview Resumes Show

We counted skills across 2,740 QA engineer postings that list a skills section. The interview-stage cohort for this role is small, three testers, so we lean on the posting demand and treat the resume we read as one honest data point.

  • The most-named skill on a QA posting is not a testing tool. It is communication, on 43% of postings. QA sits between developers, product, and release, so a clear bug report counts as much as a green build.
  • Manual testing shows up on 32% of postings, more than any single automation framework. Do not delete manual work to look modern. Name the exploratory cases you own, then show the automation you built on top.
  • Selenium still leads the frameworks at 27%, but Cypress (16%) and Playwright (15%) together match it. List the one you actually used and one thing you automated with it. A framework name with no result behind it reads as filler.
  • SQL (26%) and Python (25%) both clear a quarter of postings. QA is closer to code than many job seekers think. If you write test-data queries or automation scripts, put that high on the page.
  • API testing is on 24% of postings and Postman on 15%. If you have tested a REST API, say how many endpoints and what you caught. A number like 40 API checks travels further than the phrase API testing.
  • CI/CD (17%), Git (10%), and Jenkins (7%) tell you QA now lives inside the pipeline. A resume that shows tests running on every merge reads senior, even at mid-level.
  • Certs are real but thin. ISTQB Foundation is the one that recurs, with Advanced behind it. One relevant cert helps. A stack of unrelated ones does not.
  • The long tail drops fast. After the top eight skills, nothing clears 20%. Lead with communication, manual testing, one framework, SQL, and API testing, then tailor the rest to each job description.

Why it works: This resume treats quality as a number that moves. Coverage climbs, defect-detection time drops, and every role names the tool and the result together. See the methodology for how we build these.

The summary: Four lines that name the range: automation and Agile, a specific toolset (Selenium, Postman, Azure DevOps), and one hard figure, test coverage lifted from 63% to 88%. No wall of adjectives.

The experience: The bullets count what QA is paid to do: 220-plus bugs resolved with development, test execution time cut 36%, bug detection pulled from 4 weeks to 1 week through a CI pipeline, and manual effort down 33% from automation frameworks. Every claim carries a number.

The skills: Breadth a QA posting screens for: Selenium, Cypress, Postman, JMeter, API and regression testing, Python and Java, SQL, Jenkins and GitHub Actions, plus the ISTQB Foundation cert. The person can test a web app, a mobile app, and an API, and the list says so.

The rest of the examples are labeled models: built from Huntr's best-practice guidance and the skills real QA engineer postings ask for, so you can see how each testing specialty reads on paper.

Skills for a QA Engineer Resume

We counted the skills across 2,740 real QA engineer postings on Huntr. Pick from what employers actually ask for, then keep only what the specific job description names.

Core: communication (43% of postings), problem-solving (22%), analytical skills (19%), and Agile (20%). The soft skills lead because QA is a translation job between developers, product, and release.

Testing types: manual testing (32%), API testing (24%), regression testing (8%), performance testing (11%). Name the ones you own by hand before you list the ones you automated.

Tools: Selenium (27%), Cypress (16%), Playwright (15%), Postman (15%), Jira (23%), Jenkins (7%), Git (10%), TestRail (6%). Add the languages QA now expects: SQL (26%), Python (25%), JavaScript (22%), Java (18%).

How to use this: Lead with communication, manual testing, one automation framework, SQL, and API testing, then tailor the rest to the posting. A resume that lists frameworks with no result, or tools with no testing type, reads half-finished.

Action Verbs for QA Engineer Resumes

Catch: caught, found, flagged, reproduced, logged. Use these where a count can follow: caught 30 defects per cycle before ship; logged 220 bugs with development.

Build: automated, built, wrote, wired, migrated. These carry the automation story: automated 60 regression cases in Selenium; wired the suite into Jenkins so tests run on every merge.

Improve: cut, raised, reduced, held, dropped. Pair with a rate: raised critical-path coverage from 55% to 88%; cut defect detection from 4 weeks to 1 week.

The weak version of every QA bullet starts with "responsible for testing." The strong version starts with what you caught or automated and ends with a number.

Turn a Weak QA Bullet Into a Strong One

Weak

Responsible for testing software, writing test cases, and reporting bugs to the development team.

Strong

Automated 200 regression cases in Selenium and cut the manual pass from 2 days to 4 hours, catching an average of 30 defects per release before ship.

Same job, different evidence. The strong bullet answers the three questions a hiring manager has about a tester: what did you catch, how did you speed it up, and did anything reach the customer.

QA Engineer vs Software Developer on a Resume

Focus: a QA engineer proves the software stays correct under change; a software developer proves they built the feature in the first place. Metrics: QA resumes count defects caught, coverage raised, and escape rate held low; developer resumes count features shipped, latency cut, and systems scaled. Overlap: both now live in the pipeline and both write code, so a QA resume that shows automation in CI/CD reads as engineering, not gatekeeping.

Get a QA Resume Past the Automated Screen

The screener matches strings before a person reads a word. Keep the title standard (QA Engineer, not a clever nickname), spell out each tool the way the posting does, since Selenium and Cypress are exact matches and not synonyms, and name the testing type, not just the framework. Run the posting through Huntr's keyword scanner to see the skills you are missing, then let Resume Tailor fold the matches into your resume. Tailored resumes convert to interviews at about twice the rate of generic ones in our data.

QA Engineer Resume FAQ

Do I need to know automation to get QA interviews?

It helps, but manual testing is still on 32% of postings, more than any single framework. Name the manual and exploratory cases you own, then show one framework you automated in and one thing it caught. Range beats a single tool named with no result behind it.

Which testing tools should a QA engineer put on a resume?

Start from the posting. Across 2,740 QA postings the constants are Selenium (27%), Cypress (16%), Playwright (15%), Postman (15%), and Jira (23%), plus SQL (26%) and Python (25%). List the ones you have run real tests in, not the ones you skimmed a tutorial on.

Is an ISTQB certification worth it for a QA resume?

One relevant cert helps signal intent, and ISTQB Foundation is the one that recurs on QA resumes. It will not replace a bullet that shows a defect caught or a suite automated. Get the cert, then still count what you shipped.

How do I show impact on a QA resume?

Count the defects and the time. Coverage raised from 55% to 88%, 220 bugs logged with development, detection cut from 4 weeks to 1 week, a manual pass reduced from 2 days to 4 hours. Numbers like these turn a testing task list into evidence.

Methodology

The verified example is a composite of a real resume attached to a job that reached the interview stage for a QA engineer role on Huntr. The interview-stage cohort for this title is small, three testers, so we do not present it as a trend. We swap the name, employers, and schools for comparable real ones and check every swap against our database so no example points to a person. Where one resume anchors the example we keep its figures close to what it showed. Any interview company we name is real and never invented.

The other examples are models, labeled as such on every callout. They make no interview claim. Their skills come from the 2,740-posting count cited above and their shape follows what the verified resume does: one scope figure in the summary, a number in every bullet, and tools named the way a QA posting names them.

Conclusion

Across the posting data and the resume we read, the pattern held: communication before tools, manual testing named alongside the automation built on top, one framework shown with a real result, and defects counted the way a hiring manager counts them. A QA resume wins when it proves you caught the bug before the customer did, and shows the number to back it.

Build yours in Huntr's resume builder, then run every application through Resume Tailor so the tool names and testing types match the posting.
