Resume Examples and Guide For

Entrepreneur

Sections

An entrepreneur resume has to do two jobs: prove you built something and show you can step into the role you want. That means leading with the numbers you owned, whether that is revenue, funding raised, users, or the size of the team and budget you ran. These real resumes show how founders pulled that off, and our research across 1.7M applications backs the patterns you will see below.

The lead example is a composite of real entrepreneur and founder resumes that reached interviews on Huntr, and the companies it names are real. The labeled illustrative examples draw on real job postings for founder, owner, and general manager roles. This page was reviewed by Sam Wright, Huntr's Head of Career Strategy.

What Entrepreneur Resumes That Reached Interviews Had in Common

We read the entrepreneur and founder resumes on Huntr that reached interviews for the roles their owners applied to. Every pattern below comes from those real resumes.

  • Most opened with a written summary. Nearly every resume led with three or four lines that named the venture, its size, and one headline result before the work history began.
  • Founders turned ownership into numbers. The strongest resumes carried revenue, funding raised, users, or valuation in the top third of the page rather than in the last bullet.
  • Several were interviewing into general manager and managing director roles. Those resumes framed founding a company as running a P&L, which is what the hiring managers on the other side of the table screen for.
  • Two pages was the norm. The typical resume ran close to two pages and used the room to show more than one venture instead of padding a single job.
  • Leadership and strategic planning anchored the skills. Across the postings these founders targeted, leadership, strategic planning, and P&L management were the terms that showed up most, and the resumes tuned their skills to the target role.

How to Write an Entrepreneur Resume

Entrepreneur Resume Outline

An effective entrepreneur resume should be well-structured and highlight your unique skills, experiences, and achievements. Here's a recommended outline:

  • Contact Information
  • Professional Summary or Objective
  • Core Competencies/Skills
  • Professional Experience
  • Education
  • Achievements and Awards
  • Projects
  • Certifications
  • Additional Sections (e.g., Publications, Speaking Engagements, Volunteer Work)

Remember to tailor your resume to the specific opportunity or industry you're targeting, emphasizing the most relevant aspects of your entrepreneurial journey.

Which Resume Layout Should an Entrepreneur Use

Entrepreneurs should typically use a hybrid or combination resume layout. This format allows you to showcase your skills and chronological work history, which is ideal for highlighting your diverse experiences and achievements. Here's why it works well for entrepreneurs:

  • Highlights key skills upfront, demonstrating your entrepreneurial competencies
  • Allows for a comprehensive work history section to showcase your ventures and achievements
  • Provides flexibility to emphasize either skills or experience, depending on your background
  • It enables you to showcase projects, which is crucial for entrepreneurs

Remember to keep your resume to one page if possible, especially if you're in the early stages of your entrepreneurial journey. A two-page resume may be appropriate for more established entrepreneurs with extensive experience.

What Your Entrepreneur Resume Header Should Include

Your entrepreneur resume header should be clear and professional and include all necessary contact information. Here's what to include:

Sophia Rodriguez

[email protected] - (555) 345-6789 - Austin, TX - linkedin.com/in/example

Why it works

• Full name prominently displayed • City and state (full address not necessary) • Professional email address • Phone number • LinkedIn profile URL (optional but recommended) • Personal website or portfolio link (if relevant)

S. Rodriguez

sophia.r@gmail - linkedin.com/in

Bad example

• Missing full name • Incomplete contact information (no phone number or location) • Unprofessional email address • LinkedIn URL not properly formatted

Entrepreneur Resume Header Examples

Here are two more examples of effective entrepreneur resume headers:

Marcus Thompson

[email protected] - (555) 234-5678 - Washington, D.C. - linkedin.com/in/example

Clara Kovačević

[email protected] - (555) 890-1234 - New York, NY - linkedin.com/in/example

These headers provide all necessary information in a clear, professional format. Remember to use a professional email address and ensure your LinkedIn profile is up-to-date and reflects your entrepreneurial achievements.

What Your Entrepreneur Resume Summary Should Include

An effective entrepreneur resume summary should concisely highlight your key strengths, experiences, and achievements. It should give the reader a quick overview of your entrepreneurial journey and what makes you unique. Here's what to include:

  • Years of experience as an entrepreneur
  • Key areas of expertise or industries you've worked in
  • Significant achievements (e.g., successful exits, funding raised, revenue growth)
  • Unique skills or approaches you bring to entrepreneurship
  • Your entrepreneurial vision or passion

Keep your summary to 3-4 impactful sentences, focusing on your most impressive and relevant qualities.

Tips for an Effective Entrepreneur Resume

To create a standout entrepreneur resume, consider the following tips:

  • Focus on results and impact rather than just listing responsibilities
  • Use quantifiable achievements to demonstrate the scale of your success
  • Highlight your ability to identify opportunities and solve problems
  • Showcase your leadership skills and team-building abilities
  • Emphasize your adaptability and resilience in the face of challenges
  • Include relevant side projects or ventures, even if they weren't full-time commitments
  • Tailor your resume to the specific opportunity or industry you're targeting
  • Use industry-specific keywords to optimize for Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS)
  • Keep your resume concise and well-organized, prioritizing the most impactful information

Remember, your resume should tell a compelling story of your entrepreneurial journey and demonstrate why you're the ideal candidate for the opportunity at hand.

How Long Should I Make My Entrepreneur Resume?

The ideal length for an entrepreneur resume depends on your experience level and the complexity of your entrepreneurial journey. Here are some guidelines:

  • Early-stage entrepreneurs or those with less than 10 years of experience should aim for a one-page resume
  • Established entrepreneurs with extensive experience or multiple ventures may use a two-page resume
  • Never exceed two pages unless you're applying for a senior executive position or an academic role that requires a CV

Regardless of length, focus on quality over quantity. Prioritize your most impressive achievements and relevant experiences. Use concise language and bullet points to maximize the impact of each entry. Remember, recruiters and investors often spend only seconds scanning a resume, so make every word count.

What's the Best Format for an Entrepreneur Resume?

The best format for an entrepreneur resume is one that clearly showcases your achievements and skills while being easy to read. Here are some formatting tips:

  • Use a clean, professional font such as Arial, Calibri, or Garamond
  • Keep font size between 10 and 12 points for body text, and 14-16 points for headers
  • Use consistent formatting throughout the document
  • Utilize white space effectively to improve readability
  • Use bullet points to highlight key achievements and responsibilities
  • Include clear section headings to guide the reader
  • Consider using a hybrid or combination format to highlight both skills and chronological experience
  • Save and send your resume as a PDF to preserve formatting across different devices

Remember to tailor your resume format to your specific industry and the opportunity you're pursuing. For creative industries, you might have more flexibility with design elements, while traditional industries may prefer a more conservative approach.

What Should the Focus of an Entrepreneur Resume Be?

The focus of an entrepreneur's resume should be on demonstrating your ability to create value, drive growth, and overcome challenges. Here are key areas to emphasize:

  • Ability to secure funding and manage finances
  • Strategic thinking and market analysis skills
  • Adaptability and resilience in the face of setbacks
  • Industry expertise and network
  • Relevant skills and experiences that align with the opportunity you're pursuing

Your resume should tell a compelling story of your entrepreneurial journey, highlighting how your unique experiences and skills make you the ideal candidate for the role or opportunity you're seeking. Focus on demonstrating the value you can bring to a new venture or organization rather than simply listing your past accomplishments.

Turn a Weak Entrepreneur Bullet Into a Strong One

Weak

Responsible for running a startup and overseeing daily operations, marketing, and hiring.

Strong

Founded a SaaS startup, grew it to 500,000 users and $4M in annual recurring revenue in three years, and raised a $12M Series A.

Same founder, different evidence. The strong bullet answers what a hiring manager wants to know about an entrepreneur: how big it got, how fast, and what you raised or returned. Numbers first, verbs that show ownership, no adjectives.

Entrepreneur vs Business Owner on a Resume

The two overlap, but the emphasis differs. An entrepreneur resume leans on building something new: the venture launched, the funding raised, the growth curve. A business owner resume leans on running something steady: the revenue held, the margins managed, the team kept. If the job is closer to operating an established company, borrow from our business owner resume examples and lead with stability metrics instead of launch metrics.

Clear the Screener With an Entrepreneur Resume

A resume screener matches text before a person reads it. Use the title the posting uses (General Manager or Director, not Chief Everything Officer), spell out tools and frameworks by name, and mirror the posting's exact skill terms, since P&L management and strategic planning are matched as strings, not ideas. Run the posting through Huntr's keyword scanner to see what is missing, then let Resume Tailor fold the match into your resume. Tailored resumes reach interviews at about twice the rate of generic ones in our data.

Methodology

The verified example is a composite of real resumes attached to jobs that reached the interview stage for founder, owner, and general manager roles on Huntr. We swap names, employers, and schools for comparable real ones and check every swap against our database, so no example points to a living person. Where one resume anchors the example we shift its figures to nearby values. The interview companies we name are real and stay unchanged.

The other examples are illustrative and marked that way on every callout. They make no interview claim. Their skills come from real founder and owner job postings, and their shape follows what the verified resume does: a headline number in the summary and a dollar figure, user count, or rate in every bullet.

Conclusion

Crafting an impactful entrepreneur resume requires a strategic approach that highlights your unique journey, achievements, and the value you bring to any venture. You can effectively communicate your entrepreneurial prowess by focusing on quantifiable results, showcasing your diverse skill set, and tailoring your resume to specific opportunities. Remember, your resume is often the first impression you make on potential investors, partners, or employers, so make it count. Continuously update and refine your resume as you grow in your entrepreneurial career, and don't hesitate to seek feedback from mentors or peers in your network. With a well-crafted resume, you'll be well-positioned to seize new opportunities and take the next step in your entrepreneurial journey.
