The Academic Advisor reports to the Director of Advising. In conjunction with members of the Student-Athlete Academic Services staff, the Academic Advisor will provide academic advising, academic coordination, and learning/skill building strategies for approximately 100 student-athletes on assigned intercollegiate teams. Specifically, the advisor will assist with all aspects of course registration, major declaration, degree and graduation planning, and career exploration and development. In addition, the incumbent will guide student-athletes in becoming active and independent learners to help them achieve their academic goals at the University of Washington. The Academic Advisor works with routine and specially admitted freshmen and students who need additional support within the student-athlete population. They work together in developing individualized learning plans and track and monitor their academic progress. The advisors work closely with departmental advisors to ensure timely degree progress and graduation for each assigned student-athlete. The successful candidate will also be responsible for assisting with NCAA initial and continuing eligibility reporting and documentation on a quarterly basis. In addition, the Advisor will assist with events and programs in the student-athlete development area and have liaison responsibilities with departments and units across campus.
ACADEMIC ADVISING
Conduct one-on-one registration appointments with assigned student-athletes, quarterly. Develop, coordinate, and implement individualized academic support plans for assigned student-athletes. After consultation with the student-athlete and coaches, advisors take the lead on program development in collaboration with the assigned learning specialist. Conduct academic team meetings and coaches’ educational meetings. Consult with student-athletes as issues arise during the quarter and devise action plans. Refer to appropriate campus and community resources as needed including academic, compliance, and mental health support.
Keep abreast of all the University’s undergraduate programs and support services including major requirements. Educate students on grading options, satisfactory/non-satisfactory, dropping courses, and other academic policies/procedures. Help student-athletes track graduation requirements and plan classes for timely graduation. Track graduation plans and statistics by sport and communicate with coaching staffs.
Work closely with campus departments, Undergraduate Academic Affairs, Office of the Registrar, Admissions Office and other student affairs units to provide resources and information to students and staff. Present academic informational sessions and programs as needed.
ACADEMIC COORDINATION/LEARNING RESOURCES
Assign and monitor content and tutoring for the assigned student-athlete population. Supervision includes advising tutors about tutorial, confidential, and NCAA regulatory issues. Monitor both assigned and voluntary tutoring to increase efficiency and decrease budgetary waste.
Develop coping strategies to enable under-prepared and learning-disabled students to work academically at the collegiate level. Prepare and present curricula that strengthen note taking, reading, test taking, and time-management skills during scheduled weekly student appointments and during office hours with assigned student caseload.
Facilitate and maintain relationships between UW faculty and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics to collect information on class preparation, test performance, and student conduct. Prepare regular reports and recommendations to counselors, coaches, and other Intercollegiate Athletics staff regarding student progress. Coordinate exams to be proctored for students during team travel as needed and travel if necessary, to assist in academic endeavors.

ELIGIBILITY
Evaluate transfer credits in collaboration with compliance staff and work with departmental advisors to further assess transfer credits that may count as specific UW course equivalencies. Track courses to ensure academic eligibility. Report eligibility issues and communicate satisfactory GPA, six-credit requirement, credits, and percentage towards degree to student-athletes and coaches each quarter.
RECRUITING
Assist coaches with academic information for the recruitment of student-athletes. Meet with recruits, parents, and guests to answer academic related questions and explain academic support services that are provided by SAAS. Attend recruiting events on an as needed basis.
STUDENT-ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT
Assist students with the application process for Graduate/Professional School. Contribute to Student-Athlete Development programs and events within the SAAS unit. Assist with special programs such as the LEAP summer program and Orientation programs.
Other duties as assigned by Senior Associate Athletic Director for Student Development and the Director of Football Academics.
Compliance with the rules and regulations of the University, the NCAA, the Pacific-12 Conference, the State of Washington and any other governing body is of paramount importance to the University. The overall responsibility of this position is for the successful operation of the program in full compliance with all such rules and regulations. As a condition of employment, the Employee shall be required to participate in rules education programs offered by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree required in Education, Sports Administration/Management, Communication, English or related field. A minimum of two years’ experience working in academic advising, academic coordination, learning resources, tutoring, education, or student development/student services required.
Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum requirements.
Additional Requirements:
• Experience and working knowledge of NCAA continuing eligibility, rules, policies, procedures, and regulations.
• Working knowledge of collegiate athletics and student-athlete demands.
• Demonstrated commitment to the values of excellence, integrity, and student development.
• Ability to multi-task numerous projects and duties simultaneously and with little direct supervision. Strong organizational and time management skills and the ability to work under pressure. Attention to detail and ability to complete projects and duties efficiently and effectively.
• Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion and according to FERPA guidelines. Ability to effectively counsel and advise students with professional, academic, and/or personal questions and concerns.
• Outstanding communication skills, both oral and written, including skill in writing memos/reports. Ability to interact diplomatically with individuals of various social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds.
• Proven ability to establish working relationships and interact collaboratively and effectively with other staff, student-athletes, faculty, coaches, administrators, and the University of Washington community. Ability to work collaboratively in situations that may be time sensitive or otherwise highly pressured, with a variety of individuals including students, coaches, academic personnel, faculty and staff. Outstanding listening, analytical, and problem-solving skills in work with academic staff and students. Ability to work independently and produce results with minimal supervision.
• Some travel as well as evening and weekend hours required.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Master’s degree. More than two years’ experience working in Intercollegiate Athletics in either operations, student support services, or an administrative role.
• Pac-12 and/or University of Washington Athletics continuing eligibility rules, policies, and procedures highly desirable. Strong preference given to those candidates who have experience in academic advising, academic coordination, and/or skill-building with at-risk student-athletes at the Division I level.
