The Center for the Study of the Neurobiology of Addiction, Pain and Emotion Research Lab (NAPE) has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Technologist II (NE S SEIU 925 RT) to assist with experiments examining how various neuromodulators function within neural circuits in discrete brain states. The Research Technologist II will be working with the Bruchas lab with a direct report to Dr. Bruchas. As a center of excellence that collaborates with many departments and schools in the University (Division of Psychiatry and Behavior Sciences in the Department of Medicine; School of Pharmacology; Neurobiology and others), the NAPE lab is associated with the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, located at the University of Washington’s Health Science Building.
The individual in this position will be responsible for:
Experiment assistance and mice colony management = 75%
General lab operations support = 25%
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Experiment assistance and mice colony management = 75%
  • Assist with research studies, experiments and assays in mice, including:
    o preparation of solutions
    o optogenetics
    o chemogenetics
    o mouse anatomy
    o mouse brain tissue immunohistochemistry
    o mouse behavioral experiments, mouse surgical implants
    o stereotaxic surgery and optogenetics.
  • Within scope of position, perform data collection and management.
  • Within scope of position, perform analysis of data, using statistical programs associated with the Center. Manage the mouse colony, including:
    o preparation of breeding cages for genetic crosses
    o weaning litters of mice
    o perform genotyping PCR on mouse strains.
    General lab operations support = 25%
  • Assist with animal protocols modification.
  • Maintain inventory and order lab supplies as needed.
  • General laboratory maintenance.
  • Assist postdoctoral fellows and graduate students on various projects as required and within scope of position.
    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor's Degree in an appropriate field of technology or science, PLUS 1 year of research experience equivalent to Research Technologist I OR 1 year of full-time post-baccalaureate college in an appropriate field of science or technology. Professional level experience may be substituted, year-for-year, for the formal academic degree.
    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Laboratory research experience with animals.
  • Familiarity with Python and Matlab programming environments and statistical methodologies.
  • Expert in general scientific approach to research.
  • Prior experience with solution preparation.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Must be able to manage several projects with multiple timelines with expertise.
  • Strong ability to problem solve.
  • Demonstrated ability to use Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
  • Must be highly motivated and have demonstrated ability to work both independently and cooperatively in a group setting.
  • Willingness and ability to assist others in research activities.
    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Prior experience performing PCR.
  • Prior experience in animal models of neuropsychiatric or neurodevelopmental disorders.
  • Prior exposure to optogenetic techniques.
