The Washington National Primate Center has an outstanding opportunity for a Veterinary Specialist 1 (NE S CNU) to join their team. POSITION PURPOSE The primary purpose of this Veterinary Specialist 1 (NE S CNU) position is to provide the appropriate environment to support outstanding biomedical research directed towards significant human health issues and nonhuman primate health and biology. Under the general supervision of the Veterinary Program Manager, the Veterinary Specialist 1 (NE S CNU) provides veterinary care of nonhuman primates at the WaNPRC Arizona Breeding Colony (ABC). This position requires technical skills, ability to maintain electronic records/databases, and direct interaction with diverse groups at WaNPRC.
This worker will have primary duties including but not limited to the following:
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
General Duties
Support of veterinary services via records maintenance, managing clinical cases and treatments according to established guidelines and protocols, clinical disease diagnostics, processing procedures, administering medications, animal handling and restraint, sedation, sample and body weight collection, maintenance of equipment and procedure rooms.
Conduct screening tests to monitor laboratory animal health, e.g. tuberculin testing in nonhuman primates, parasitology, blood chemistry and hematology, etc.
Perform sedation and immobilization with controlled drugs under the direction of a veterinarian.
Maintain equipment such as autoclaves and diagnostic devices in accordance with specified standards and SOPs, including documentation on monthly checklists.
Maintain clinical areas such as procedure rooms, necropsy, surgery suite, etc. in accordance with SOPs and supervisor instructions, including documentation on weekly and monthly checklists.
Perform set-up and clean-up for procedures, as directed by supervisor.
Track inventory and maintain supplies, as directed by supervisor.
Provide weekend and holiday coverage.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Monitoring
Conduct health monitoring for all animals on an assigned basis (daily).
Conduct ongoing observations of animals under care to assess treatment response.
Work with AT and BMS staff to triage animals more closely when needed.
Communication
Provide input to veterinarians on animal treatment response.
Note any abnormal behaviors during routine duties in animal rooms, enter into appropriate databases and notify appropriate parties.
Work with Animal Technician and Behavioral Management staff to complete body weights and animal moves.
Participate in other cross-trained duties as needed.
May need to provide environmental enrichment, dependent on staffing.
Sign for deliveries to ABC, make copies of invoices, and distribute original copies to appropriate parties.
Ship specimens according to written procedures and as indicated by supervisor.
Other duties as assigned, as indicated by supervisor.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Associate Degree from an accredited school of animal technology; registration as an Animal Technician by the State of Arizona, and one year experience with the care and treatment of animals in a veterinary practice.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Experience working with nonhuman primates.
Must be familiar with observing non-human primate behavior and committed to promoting non-human primate well-being.
Desktop computing skills, including word processing, spreadsheet design, graphing and data sheet design, entering data into electronic records, etc. (e.g., ARMS).
Demonstrated ability to work reliably and independently.
Strong written and oral communication skills.
OR Equivalent education/experience.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
One year of experience working with non-human primates.
Positions typically require an Associate Degree from an accredited school of animal technology. Alternatively, registration, certification or licensure in an animal or veterinary technician field and one year experience with the care and treatment of animals in a veterinary practice; or equivalent education/experience.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Employment is contingent upon successful completion of health assessment at a Health Clinic. The health assessment may include but is not limited to tuberculosis clearance, measles clearance, serum banking, immunizations, such as tetanus and vaccinia, physical exam and/or review of work health history, x-rays, and/or assessment to wear positive or negative respiratory protective equipment. These health assessments will be repeated periodically during work assignment.
Punctuality, regular and predictable attendance is an essential job function of this position.
May be required to work with and take specific precautions against, and/or be immunized against potentially infectious agents. Specific precautions may include wearing respirators and/or protective clothing.
Employee is personally responsible for following health & safety and security policies/procedures and staying current on all required training. Bloodborne pathogen training and compliance with all WaNPRC and UW security policies is also mandatory.
This position involves handling non-human primates and human pathogenic organisms. The ability to work in an ABSL 2 with 3 practices containment facility is required.
In addition, the employee is required to maintain all necessary licensing credentials as determined by State and Federal Law.
Adhere to the WaNPRC Environmental Enhancement Plan requirements for NHPs.
Participate in the Behavioral Management and Positive Reinforcement Primate Training Programs.
Develop a working knowledge of classical and operant conditioning principles and how they apply to handling primates in a research environment, with positive reinforcement as the expectation.
