The University of Washington’s Division of General Internal Medicine (GIM) is considered to be among the top Divisions of General Internal Medicine in the nation. The Division has a workforce of over 550, with 460+ faculty members who are known for their outstanding research, teaching and patient care.
The Division conducts its activities at the UW Medical Center (UWMC-Montlake and Northwest), Harborview Medical Center (HMC), and the VA Puget Sound Health Care System (VAPSHCS) and VA Boise, with research sites located at multiple sites across Seattle. GIM has faculty in seven academic primary care clinics as well as in neighborhood clinics located across the Puget Sound, and manages inpatients at four Seattle area hospitals.
GIM is the largest division in the Department of Medicine and includes both clinical and research functions with a total annual budget of over $110m. Faculty and staff are spread over 10+ sites around Seattle and the Puget Sound as well as in Boise, Idaho.
The Cognition in Primary Care (CPC) Program is housed in the Department of Medicine/ Division of General Internal Medicine, led by Dr. Barak Gaster. The program directs quality improvement for the detection of dementia in primary care using a suite of tools, resources, and training. The program has a growing list of established partnerships with medical associations and health care systems across the country.
The Department of Medicine/ Division of General Internal Medicine has an outstanding full-time opportunity for a Program Manager for the Cognition in Primary Care (CPC) Program. The person in this position will have substantial responsibility for overseeing the implementation of all aspects of the program, including its quality improvement activities, its budget, its marketing, and its external engagement relationships, serving as the main point of contact and coordinator for the program. This position will report directly to the Program Director, Dr. Barak Gaster, and will work closely with other associate program leadership as well as administrators from the Division of General Internal Medicine, the Department of Medicine, the Department of Family Medicine, the Department of Neurology, UW Population Health Analytics, and UW Medicine Primary Care, among others.
The position will have independent authority to develop systems for coordinating all aspects of the CPC Program, coordinating all of the internal communications with program leadership and staff and all internal partners. The position will require continuous high level independent judgment, will require the ability to take initiative to build and grow the program’s extensive range of dissemination activities, and will require strong leadership as well as advanced project management skills to organize and delegate tasks to other members of the CPC team. The position will require extensive knowledge of health care system structures as well as clinical workflows to effectively promote and troubleshoot the adaptation of quality improvement initiatives for health care systems and health organizations across the country, including independent communications with external partners. The successful candidate will have experience implementing initiatives related to dementia.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Project Management (60%)
  • Independently manage a range of scope of work documents, analysis plans, project reports, and partnership agreements with health care systems and other partners.
  • Develop and oversee all contracted budgets with external funders and with outside health systems who will be adapting CPC-related quality improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain, organize, and update repositories of program documents, resources, training, and tools.
  • Independently implement evaluation plans, including quality improvement data extraction and the development and maintenance of databases of outcome measures.
  • Independently problem-solve issues related to project implementation and evaluation and independently guide internal and external partners and teams to resolution.
  • Identify obstacles and find solutions for proper implementation of CPC quality improvement initiatives in a wide range of practice settings.
    Project Development (20%)
  • Implement strategies for the promotion and expansion of the CPC program.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with physicians, health care system leaders, and other CPC program champions in the region and nationwide.
  • Independently develop agreements and protocols, consulting with senior leadership for their finalization.
  • Develop new program materials as well as update and improve existing program materials.
  • Assist in authoring curriculum materials and development of educational training for primary care providers.
  • Identify opportunities for operations research and quality improvement evaluation questions.
    Analyze Results (15%)
  • Perform data audits and data cleaning.
  • Collaborate with internal and external partner teams in interpreting data and preparing technical and programmatic reports, graphic displays of data, and manuscripts for publication, contributing scientific knowledge and training in quality improvement research methodology.
  • Contribute to the writing of study status reports to funders as requested.
    General (5%)
  • Facilitate communication through coordination of project-related meetings and calls.
  • Other related duties as required.
    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor’s degree in public health or related area of study.
  • Three years of experience in project management and/or planning in the area of health services research or evaluation.
    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Data and data management skills.
  • Familiarity with initiatives related to mild cognitive impairment and dementia.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master’s degree in public health or related area of study.
  • Prior experience working closely with physicians / frontline clinicians, healthcare system leaders, and healthcare professionals.
  • Bilingual (English / Spanish).
  • Proven history of independent judgment and decision making, as well as self-directed work.
