The THINK lab in UW’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has an outstanding opportunity open for a Research Scientist / Engineer 2 position.
THINK (Transportation-Human Interaction-and- Network Knowledge) Lab at the University of Washington is an interdisciplinary laboratory whose research and education activities are at the intersection of human mobility behavior, the built environment and the larger infrastructure systems, and data science. The work at the lab answers to some of the most important questions for communities and the larger society relating to America’s prosperity, human well-being, sustainability, and resilience.
THINK lab currently has a wide range of projects supported by a number of federal, state and local agencies and private industries including National Science Foundation (NSF), US Department of Transportation (USDOT), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), UW Global Innovation Fund (GIF), FACEBOOK, and Amazon. The lab works closely with a wide range of stakeholders (government agencies, non-profit, businesses, and communities) and collaborators in multiple continents. The lab also collects and uses a wide range of datasets some of which are confidential. There is a need to have a research scientist/engineer to help manage the data in the lab, help supervise students working in the lab, and lead/help with ongoing research projects. The research scientist provides support under the guidance of the lab director and they will report to the lab director.
The successful Research Scientist/Engineer (RSE) requires strong collaboration and communication skills to coordinate stakeholder engagement and involvement of various personnel on projects, and to facilitate organization of different teams. The RE works closely with the lab director, graduate and undergraduate students, postdoc(s), senior personnel and others who work closely with the lab. The RE must be well organized to successfully coordinate and share information with the lab director and co-investigators located at within and outside UW. The RSE must also be able to communicate clearly in writing and orally.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead and conduct of research activities
  • Lead research activities on existing projects to the finish line (manuscript publication, technology transfer etc.).
  • Participate and provide support in research activities conducted by others (students and postdocs).
  • Work with lab director closely to help develop new ideas and proposals.
  • Lead and assist with research and education activities.
    Management of lab activities such as data and coding standards to ensure reproducibility
  • Manage various datasets used in the lab.
  • Ensure standards of practices (in coding and software development) to ensure reproducibility.
  • Help mentor entry-level graduate students and undergraduate students to help them onboard with the lab after they join.
  • Manage lab website.
    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, or a closely related field and two years of relevant experience, OR Equivalent combination of education/experience.
    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master’s degree in civil engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Strong programming skills (MATLAB, Python, R, or others).
  • Prior academic or industry experience.
  • Strong communication, presentation and documentation skills.
  • 2-3 years’ experience in a science or engineering field or research or equivalent education and/or experience.
  • Self-organized and detail oriented.
  • Strong written and verbal communication.
  • Solid foundational training in data science, optimization or other related areas (e.g., statistics, mathematics, or computer science).
  • Prior experience in academic research settings.
