The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences within the UW School of Medicine is the third largest clinical department within the School of Medicine with 330 full-time faculty members, 460 courtesy faculty members, and over 350 staff. Department faculty provide clinical services in 5 hospitals, 14 primary care locations, and several outpatient sites in addition to telepsychiatry consultations to more than 150 clinics in Washington and beyond. As the only academic psychiatry department serving the five state WWAMI region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, Idaho), the Department’s highly competitive residency training program is largely responsible for developing the mental health workforce in the Pacific Northwest. The Department’s robust research portfolio totals $67 million in grants and contracts per year for projects ranging from clinical neurosciences to treatment development to health policy and population health. The Department is recognized as an international leader in developing, testing, and implementing Collaborative Care, an integrated care model increasingly seen as a solution for population-based mental health care. Other areas of excellence include Addictions, Autism, High Risk Youth, Neurosciences, and Trauma, and the Department is developing innovative new programs in Technology and Mental Health, Global Mental Health, Maternal and Child Mental Health, and Targeted Intervention Development. Psychiatry is the third largest department in the School of Medicine and the largest non-divisioned department. The overall annual operations funding from all sources is over $130 million.
POSITION PURPOSE The Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences within the UW School of Medicine currently has an outstanding opportunity for a 50% FTE Research Study Assistant.
This position will work closely with the Principal Investigator and colleagues on a study funded by the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. This 5-year study involves conducting a randomized controlled trial of an app to prevent PTSD and alcohol misuse among recent sexual assault survivors (study years 2-5). The study is currently in year 2. Due to funding, this is a 6-month position, with a duration from January 8, 2025 to July 8, 2025.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Study staff on this project are organized into teams. This position will assist with tasks on several teams, including the following:
Study Management Team:
Assist with the hiring, training, and oversight of undergraduate research assistants.
Assist tasks related to the Data and Safety Monitoring Board (e.g., schedule meetings, prepare meeting agendas, send meeting reminders, attend meetings, take notes in meetings, update board reports).
Attend team meetings.
Perform other related duties as assigned/required.
Participant Relations Team:
Screen potential participants by phone (involves asking about highly sensitive topics).
Call participants to orient them to the study app.
Conduct weekly coaching calls to support app use with participants.
Contact participants as needed to address issues.
Answer participant questions.
Provide referrals and crisis intervention to participants as needed.
Arrange clinical follow up for participants (e.g., crisis support).
Conduct administrative tasks (e.g., scheduling participants, documenting interactions, obtaining consent).
Train research assistants to perform screenings.
Attend team meetings.
Perform other related duties as assigned/required.
Note: Some participant interactions may occur after standard business hours.

Complete tasks in a timely and accurate fashion while maintaining participant safety and abiding by all study procedures.
Proactively identify, clarify, and resolve instances of conflicting, confusing, or insufficiently-documented instructions, information, documentation, priorities, and/or project requirements.
In an ongoing manner, identify strategies to improve performance based on feedback and self-reflection.
Effectively manage competing time demands, prioritize appropriately while maintaining efficiency, and troubleshoot solutions when time management challenges arise.
Develop and maintain in-depth knowledge of any study systems related to task assignments; use study systems in a manner consistent with written and verbal instructions.
Maintain the highest standards of research ethics; maintain confidentiality of research data and participant records.
Attend regular project meetings and supervision.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Two years of college-level course work in a relevant academic area AND one year of appropriate experience, OR equivalent education/experience.

At least one year of experience working in a research lab.
