The Department of Ophthalmology has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer 1 to join their team. The Research Scientist/Engineer 1 will apply standard laboratory techniques to Color Blindness Research Studies. Candidate is expected to continue in the development of technical expertise and knowledge related to gene therapy procedures as they apply to vision testing data using processes that include monitoring and calibration of a four-primary visual stimulus generation system, calibration, set up and monitoring of Tobii X3 and Sactrack eye tracking systems.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Research & Experimentation (45%)
Performing Gene Therapy Research: Independently perform gene therapy procedures, including monitoring changes in visual performance using Tobii X3 and Sactrack eye-tracking systems.
Animal Experimentation: Perform procedures to prepare animals for electrophysiology and histology experiments.
Laboratory Experiments: Conduct experiments in the laboratory, including taking measurements, recording observations, and collecting data for reports and presentations.
GFP Fluorescence Measurement: Make quantitative measurements of GFP fluorescence using RetCam fundus imaging system.
Data Management & Analysis (35%)
Data Analysis & Troubleshooting: Analyze data, troubleshoot, perform daily quality control, and monitor/calibrate a four-primary visual stimulus generation system.
Backup & Analyze Vision Test Data: Backup vision test data, perform analysis on raw eye-tracking data, and generate results summaries.
Comparison of Eye-Tracking Systems: Compare results from two eye-tracking systems independently with guidance from senior lab personnel.
Calibration & Reporting: Manage the calibration of test stimuli using a spectral radiometer and report outcomes.
Collaboration & Learning (10%)
Collaborate with other team members to accomplish organizational goals and learn new approaches and tasks under limited supervision.
Laboratory Operations (10%)
Perform other basic laboratory skills, including keeping detailed records of procedures performed.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelors degree in biology, chemistry or related field and one year of experience with imaging and laboratory chemistry.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience with Tobii X3 and Sactrack eye tracking systems.
Experience working with rodents.
Experience with Microsoft Office suite of programs including Word and Excel.
Must comply with NIH, Federal, state and University regulations on the safe and ethical use of animals and humans in research.
