The Department of Family Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer 4 to join their team.
The University of Washington Department of Family Medicine houses the WWAMI (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho) region Practice and Research Network (WPRN). The network includes over 120 primary care practices that engage in research that is relevant to primary care. This opportunity is for a research scientist IV who will oversee research efforts within the WPRN. Specifically, this position will promote health equity by engaging with primary care practices, clinicians, and patients to implement and co-design research studies of importance to primary care. These efforts align with NIH priorities to expand research in primary care settings and engage communities, practices and participants. Many of the studies take place in partnership with clinics across the 5-state region. WPRN studies improve primary care by testing and implementing evidence-based treatments in real-world practice, building quality improvement capacity within practices and leveraging electronic health records to improve health. The research scientist will work closely with the WPRN Coordinating Center and will contribute to the research agenda of two family physician investigators, Dr. Sebastian Tong, who leads the PRIME Lab that focuses on chronic pain, substance use and loneliness and Dr. Allison Cole, whose work focuses on cancer prevention in primary care
The University of Washington Department of Family Medicine Research Scientist 4 position will execute research efforts in primary care and practice-research. The position will work closely with primary care practices within our practice-based research network, the WWAMI (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho) region Practice and Research Network.
POSITION PURPOSE
  • This position will manage and significantly contribute to research efforts related to primary care, such as developing, testing and incorporating evidence-based treatments for common conditions in primary care; improving quality improvement capacity within primary care practices; leveraging electronic health records to improve health; and engaging patients, families, community organizations and clinicians in research.
  • The position will lead elements of the research process and strategic planning and, as a leader within the research group, effectively leverage staffing and research strengths to expand existing infrastructure and capacity while identifying synergies to increase efficiencies.
  • The position also serves as a departmental expert on practice-based research, implementation science and health equity providing scientific guidance on these areas to other studies.
  • In addition, this position mentors other staff who manage day-to-day activities in studies, providing both scientific and logistical oversight. The position also provides scientific input into future research studies in the Department research portfolio including preparation of grant applications and dissemination of current research findings through publications and presentations. The Research Scientist’s direct supervisor will be Dr. Allison Cole, Professor, Department of Family Medicine.
    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead research capacity building and practice engagement activities across the WPRN, including design of regional engagement activities, health topic prioritization activities, study design, and implementation.
  • Execute studies including strategic planning, implementation of projects, identifying challenges and barriers and developing innovative approaches to addressing barriers, leading budget development, communicating and overseeing interdisciplinary team, mentoring and supervising other research staff
  • Consult and train, present and provide feedback on practice-based research and health equity
  • Develop dissemination products including manuscripts and presentations around current studies, methodologies and innovations
  • Conceptualize, develop new concepts including identifying, initiating and following through on new funding and research opportunities, assisting with developing a project strategic plan
    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Master’s degree in a related field and four years of relevant experience, or Equivalent combination of education/experience.
    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Established technical expertise; serves as a resource to research team
  • Practice-based Research, Implementation Science and Health Equity Research Expertise
  • Experience preparing dissemination products such as manuscripts and presentations to both academic and community settings
  • Experience managing multi-site trials (stakeholder engagement, managing vendors contracts, subawards, and IRB reliance agreements)
  • Experience conducting quantitative descriptive and inferential analyses
  • Excellence in project management concepts and processes
  • Experience supporting grant proposal development and submissions for research funding
  • Proficiency of fluency in Spanish
    CONDITITONS OF EMPLOYMENT
    The research scientist shall work in a collaborative environment with staff and faculty members within the UW Department of Family Medicine Research Section as well as with researchers and staff from other UW departments and organizations outside the UW. The team currently has a hybrid structure with team split between the office and remote work. 100% remote work is not anticipated.
    The research scientist must be able to work independently and collaboratively with a variety of faculty investigators and staff members from multidisciplinary backgrounds on projects. The research coordinator shall be supporting research faculty as well as experienced staff collaborators
