UW Medical Center has an outstanding opportunity for a Patient Safety Officer to join our team. The Patient Safety Officer provides direction and oversight for the UW Medical Center Patient Safety Program. The Patient Safety Officer works collaboratively with executives, faculty, and staff to identify trends, patterns, and opportunities to improve patient safety and to reduce risk. This position reports directly to the Center for Clinical Excellence (CCE) Assistant Administrator and is frequently consulted by the Associate Administrator for Quality & Value Based Care, the UWMC Chief Executive Officer, the Medical Director, the Chief Nursing Officer, and others. The Patient Safety Officer possesses expertise in patient safety principles, including high reliability and error/harm prevention theory and practice. The individual in this position is a skilled and effective communicator with the ability to interface at all levels of the organization, including the ability to persuade and negotiate in controversial and sensitive situations. The Patient Safety Officer is effective at leading and fostering change, and communicates the results of safety initiatives and their strategic and financial impact. The Patient Safety Officer also possesses expertise in performance improvement that support the reduction of errors and other factors that contribute to unintended adverse patient outcomes. This position requires strong facilitation skills, critical analytical and evaluative skills, and the ability to lead, direct and support change strategies.
SCHEDULE
Full-time days Monday – Friday. Position is hybrid to allow for working in the office and from remote site.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • In collaboration with the Center for Clinical Excellence (CCE) Assistant Administrator, the Associate Administrator of Quality & Value Based Care, and the Associate Medical Director for Quality and Safety, is responsible for overall direction and programmatic development of the UWMC Patient Safety Program. This includes implementation of entity-wide strategic initiatives in Patient Safety, leadership to support change, and effective communication of Patient Safety directives across all levels of the entity. This position is a subject matter expert, consultant and resource throughout the medical center and encourages the use of evidence-based patient safety strategies.
  • Supervises the work of the Patient Safety team. Plans, assigns work, counsels, coaches and reviews the work of staff and instructs and advises on methods and procedures. Provides access to adequate training for staff in areas such as technical knowledge, customer service and professional development.
  • Leads/facilitates patient safety reviews through patient safety assessments, intensive reviews, root cause analysis (RCA) and Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA). Facilitates multidisciplinary improvement teams.
  • Works collaboratively across the medical center to coordinate and synthesize information about individual cases. Works with management, units, departments and divisions to identify trends, patterns, and opportunities to improve patient safety and reduce risk. Assists in the coordination and integration of medical, nursing, and ancillary department activities as they relate to patient safety improvement.
  • Supports and encourages the use of Patient Safety Net (PSN) for error and near miss patient event reporting. Performs data analysis in collaboration with other members of the Patient Safety Team to identify quality and safety improvement opportunities. Assists managers in the interpretation of aggregate data. Recommends and facilitates change to improve patient safety.
  • Participates as a member of various medical center committees involved in Patient Safety policy and procedure development and program planning.
    REQUIREMENTS
  • An active RN license in Washington State
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
  • Master’s Degree in healthcare or a clinical related field (i.e., MHA, MBA).
  • At least five years experience in Patient Safety
    Equivalent education/experience may substitute for the above requirements.
    DESIRED
  • Leadership/management experience in an accredited medical center
  • Certification in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ)
  • Leadership experience in a Magnet-designated healthcare organization
  • Proven success in organizational leadership and change
  • Administrative experience in a University or academic medical center
  • Experience with nursing workforce development, retention, and nursing education
  • Superior communication skills
