The WWAMI Institute for Simulation in Healthcare (WISH), has an exciting mission-driven opportunity for a Simulation Instructional Designer. The Simulation Instructional Designer contributes to the development and execution of simulation-based curriculum, to aid in knowledge and skill development for healthcare professionals as they become proficient at medical procedures.
Healthcare simulation is a compelling and expanding new field of education combining engineering, technology, medical science, art, theatre, psychology, and human behavior to improve patient outcomes through high-quality training. Since its establishment in 2005, the WISH program has become a national leader in the advancement of healthcare education using innovative technology and methodologies, giving healthcare providers and trainees a safe environment for hands-on learning and practice. As the Simulation Instructional Designer for the WISH program, we seek a motivated and collaborative individual who will bring their creativity, flexibility, problem-solving abilities, and enthusiasm to advancing the educational mission of WISH, the Department, and the University.
The position works closely with both clinical and non-clinical subject matter experts across WISH's breadth of stakeholders, to identify, coordinate, and implement the use of appropriate modalities, equipment, and simulation best-practices in the design, delivery, and dissemination of curricula, as well as coordinating incorporation of assessment and research protocols into educational activities. The Simulation Instructional Designer reports to the WISH Associate Director for Operations with a matrixed reporting relationship to the Chief of the Division of Healthcare Simulation Science. A primary concentration of this position is expanding current practices relating to the development of education that includes diverse patient populations. This position will regularly assist with educational needs assessments to identify and address existing gaps in training to develop new, high-quality courses and activities.??
This position will collaborate with the HCSS Research Faculty to incorporate research protocols and evaluations into WISH educational activities.

    RESPONSIBILITIES
    Design and Implementation of Educational Products and Processes (40%)
  • Collaborate with instructors and WISH technical staff to identify and streamline the appropriate equipment, spaces, staffing, and audio/visual capabilities based on the needs of the course and rehearsing those plans prior to pilot/implementation and continued evolution to ensure best uses of technology and tools to meet the curricular goal and optimize delivery across various platforms.
  • Develop, produce, and implement original media content, training solutions, and documentation for production by identifying and addressing current market-gaps (such deliverables may include simulation scenarios, e-module content, interactive tools and programming, low-cost/high-fidelity task trainers).
  • Under the direction of WISH Site Managers and/or supervisors, develop, deliver, and annually refine internal training programming, including staff, instructor, and learner onboarding and orientations, (e.g., Sim101 sessions, after-hours use protocols, etc.) to build competency with simulation technologies and practices.
  • In collaboration with the Technical Operations Manager, perform general maintenance and operation of laboratory, simulation, and A/V equipment, including on-the-fly troubleshooting, fixing minor problems, arranging for service as needed, and provides evaluation/suggestion for new equipment through their role on the WISH Technology Purchase Prioritization Committee.
    Educational Liaison/Strategist (30%)
  • Serve as lead consultant for educational development and instructional design across all WISH program facilities (HMC, UWMC-Montlake, UWMC-NW) for the creation and implementation of healthcare simulation-based educational activities. This position will shepherd clinical and non-clinical subject matter experts through the various stages of pedagogy and program development (e.g., WISH Application for Resourcing, Course Information Form (CIF) development, etc.), as well as steward the identification and advancement of simulation resources, best-practices, equipment, and technologies.??
  • Liaise with Site Managers and Associate Directors to reconfigure current practices for course documentation and record keeping through the creation, oversight, management, and continuous improvement of WISH databases (e.g., WISHTrak, equipment inventory, specimen use database, CIF etc.).
  • Build collaborative relationships with University partners and Division leaders in the development of simulation materials and delivery to foster synergy across simulation affiliated entities (e.g., School of Drama, DXARTS, Department of Bioengineering, CoMotion, etc.).
    Educational Research and Assessment for Evaluation (30%)
  • Serve as technical consultant with HCSS Research Faculty to support all aspects of study development and implementation to operationalize research and data collection protocols with the goal of creating high-quality, and potentially publishable, curricula. This may include assisting with the development, adaptation, and/or revisions to evaluation tools for simulation research, (e.g. checklists, OSCEs, questionnaires, debriefing tools, etc.).
  • Assist AD for Operations with the development, implementation, and management of standardized processes for course tracking, annual evaluation, and revisions to educational programming, leveraging current and emerging trends and best practices in simulation science.
    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • BA degree in science, adult education, creative arts, or other related field.
  • 3-4 years of healthcare simulation experience, or relevant background in healthcare education, and/or instructional design.
  • Familiarity with educational principles for adult learning, and curriculum development and/or instructional design.
  • This position regularly requires independent use of varying technologies, candidate must be well-versed and comfortable learning and applying multiple new technologies (e.g., development software; simulation equipment, cameras/video equipment; A/V routing, etc.)

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Prior clinical experience, certifications, and/or extensive knowledge of the healthcare field.
  • Prior experience with e-module development, or content development used for instruction.
  • Experience with teaching/educational instruction.
    WORKING CONDITIONS
  • This position supports the educational and research programming across all WISH locations (HMC, UWMC – Montlake, UWMC – Northwest). This position must be able to regularly travel between all locations, as needed.
  • WISH simulation equipment requires moving and positioning on a regular basis when working as a technician. The position calls for safe carrying of ~40lbs simulation equipment, maneuvering in tight spaces, and occasional use of a ladder. Candidate must be physically able to move equipment and assist with transport/loading/moving between training locations.
  • Occasionally, the position requires the preparation of biological specimens for educational activities. Successful candidates should be open to working with, and in an environment that supports regular use of tissues and cadaveric specimens.
