UW-IT is the central IT organization for the University of Washington, providing critical technology support to all three campuses, UW medical centers and global research operations. UW-IT collaborates with University partners to advance teaching, learning, innovation and discovery at the UW.
The Research Computing group within UW-IT designs, implements, and operates Linux based High Performance Computing (HPC) clusters, high performance parallel file systems storage, as well as provides research computing consultation and support to campus customers.
The HPC Staff Scientist (payroll title: Software Engineer) focuses on supporting HPC efforts for the research computing group, while providing expertise and support to other endeavors when needed. This position requires a team-oriented professional with the ability to communicate with researchers across multiple disciplines. This position regularly interfaces with other UW-IT teams as well as research customers across campus.
Knowledge of computational research practices, the ability to work and communicate with academic researchers, an optimistic “can do” disposition, collaborative growth mindset, and a customer-centric perspective are all key for success in this role.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor’s Degree informatics, Research, Statistics, Engineering or related field or experience.
  • Four years scientific background or research experience, or experience directly supporting computational research.
  • Familiarity with computational research, preferably in a cluster environment.
  • Knowledge of computational reproducibility best practices (i.e., git, containers).
  • Strong familiarity with Linux.
  • Excellent demonstrated written/oral communication, technical documentation, user liaising, and personal interaction abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision, both independently and as part of a team.
    Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum requirements.
    DESIRED REQUIREMENTS
    Experience with:
  • Working in a university research setting.
  • Optimized compilation and configuration of complex software from source code.
  • HPC cluster schedulers such as Slurm, Torque, Grid Engine, etc.
  • MPI and parallel computing/scaling.
  • Techniques for efficient management and computation on large datasets.
  • Optimizing scientific compute workflows.
  • Software profiling, identification/elimination of bottlenecks, and performance tuning.
  • Teaching, training, or technical writing experience as demonstrated by research publications, grants, technical documentation, or similar.
  • Systems administration and/or programming/scripting experience.
    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Requires monitoring of e-mail and trouble ticket system for questions needing immediate response during business hours.
  • Other duties are assigned or required to support the service.
  • Open office environment.
  • Hybrid office environment.
  • This is a remote essential position and is required to work remotely when the University suspends operations.
