UW Information Technology (UW-IT) is the central IT organization for the University of Washington (UW), providing critical technology support to all three campuses, UW medical centers, and global research operations.
Academic Experience Design & Delivery (AXDD) , a unit within UW-IT, advances teaching, learning, research, and clinical work by investigating computing trends and identifying user needs in order to implement and support the latest technology solutions and applications for communication and collaboration, instruction, productivity, and risk management. These applications are used by students, faculty, staff, researchers, clinicians, and external partners. In addition, AXDD collaborates with campus partners on key university initiatives to develop new products and services that meet student needs. For example, AXDD currently partners with UW advising units to provide predictive analytics applications that assist with student retention and success initiatives.
The User Experience Designer (UXD) designs, develops, and consults on products for use in teaching, learning, research, and collaboration by members of the University of Washington community. Working directly with faculty, staff, researchers and students, the UXD applies User-Centered Design (UCD) methodologies to discover the needs and goals of their audiences, leveraging these to create and modify interactive software applications in collaboration with software engineers, researchers, user support, quality assurance staff, and technical writers from the AXDD team and with other staff from UW-IT. The UXD participates in all stages of the development process, from user research to making technology recommendations and writing production code, aligning the project’s efforts to the holistic vision of user experience every step of the way. The UXD is expected to serve as a UCD champion and consultant throughout AXDD, other departments within the UW-IT and the UW community, and at times to other higher-education institutions.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Interaction Design, related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two-years’ experience creating clean information architecture, page layouts, visual designs, and product narrative that supports the end-user.
  • Experience creating valid HTML and CSS, with a focus on web semantics, and Accessibility best practices.
  • Experience with Git/SVN and LESS/SASS.
  • Experience with JS Libraries (especially JQuery and Bootstrap).
  • Experience with Django, React, VUE, or equivalent development frameworks.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the user-centered design process.
  • Experience in user research design and selecting appropriate research methodologies to create a clear understanding of end-user and business needs.
  • Demonstrated clear communication of complex ideas to a variety of audiences, using words, pictures, and interactions.
  • Demonstrated excellent written/oral communication skills, technical documentation skills, user liaison skills, and personal interaction abilities.
  • Excellent teamwork skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Up-to-date on current design and front-end development practices and tools.
    Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum requirements.
    DESIRED REQUIREMENTS
  • Experience with the design of the holistic user experience of products within cross-disciplinary development teams.
  • Understanding of mobile-first, responsive web, and adaptive web practices.
  • Mobile application, mobile Web, and native app development experience.
  • Experience in design of applications tools for teaching, learning and/or collaboration.
  • Experience working in an Agile software development process.
    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
    While the general working hours are within Monday through Friday, 8 am - 5 pm, this position has a great deal of scheduling and location flexibility to help the UXD manage non-work commitments. The UXD at times must be willing to adjust hours to accommodate the needs of colleagues and partners. Events that will occur outside the normal work schedule include, but are not limited to, impromptu staff meetings, client consultations, and system modifications. This position has regular stringent deadlines revolving around the academic calendar that may require extended work hours. The position also requires 24x7 on-call support to handle urgent issues and incidents.
    This position is required to report to work remotely when the UW suspends operations.
