UW Medicine’s IT Services department has an outstanding opportunity for a Practitioner Liaison Specialist to join the team.
UW Medicine’s Information Technology Services (ITS) department is a shared services organization that supports all of UW Medicine. UW Medicine is comprised of Harborview Medical Center (HMC), UW Medical Center-Montlake Campus (UWMC-Montlake), UW Medical Center-Northwest Campus (UWMC-NW), Valley Medical Center (VMC), UW Neighborhood Clinics (UWNC), UW Physicians (UWP), UW School of Medicine (SOM) and Airlift Northwest (ALNW). In addition, UW Medicine shares in the ownership and governance of Children’s University Medical Group and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (a partnership between UW Medicine, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research and Seattle Children’s). ITS is responsible for the ongoing support and maintenance of the infrastructure and applications which support all of these institutions, along with the implementation of new services and applications that are used to support and further the UW Medicine mission.
In collaboration with UW Medicine IT Services (ITS) and under the general guidance of the End User Adoption Manager, the primary focus of the Practitioner Liaison Specialist ('Specialist') is to provide embedded, customized, customer-oriented, continuous clinical information systems support to physicians, clinicians, managers, and other healthcare workers in a designated specialty service line.
The Practitioner Liaison Program is a new program within UW Medicine ITS Informatics created to:
  • identify and alleviate electronic health record (EHR) usability issues among practitioners;
  • collaborate with practitioners to understand and personalize EHR tools for their specialty;
  • increase practitioner productivity, engagement, morale, and job satisfaction;
  • minimize practitioner burnout and apathy toward future upgrades/adoption;
  • advocate for physicians in the implementation of the electronic health record system (EHR) in their workflows; and
  • improve the EHR system for clinicians.

  • Though this position contributes to the Practitioner Liaison Program team, the Specialist will have individual responsibility for providing informatics systems support to an assigned clinical area.
    Areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to:
  • serving as a liaison between clinical leadership, executive administration, and ITS to promote optimal system and workflow functionality;
  • partnering with service line clinical administrative leadership to identify workflow improvement opportunities;
  • designing and delivering individualized, small group, and large group efficiency solutions; and
  • supporting practitioners in adjusting, integrating, and streamlining EHR system go-live changes and general updates into their workflows while maintaining quality patient care.

  • The Specialist will contribute to an inclusive organization of over 20,000 diverse employees working together to improve the health and well-being of unique communities served by UW Medicine. The successful implementation and growth of the Practitioner Liaison Program will (1)build practitioner understanding and self-sufficiency with EHR systems to increase productivity, engagement, morale, and job satisfaction, and (2) providing personalized support during system upgrades and adoptions, cognizant of the practitioner’s specialty and workflows, to minimize practitioner burnout and apathy. This program seeks to obtain these goals in conjunction with maintaining and improving patient care.
    RESPONSIBILITIES
    End-User Adoption (50%)
  • Demonstrate in depth knowledge of health information system capabilities, applications, and operational workflows to support the development of training and methodologies in order to operate effectively as an adoption specialist for end-users.
  • Collaborate with practitioners to understand and personalize EHR tools for their specialty.
  • Analyze and troubleshoot EHR specific modules; assess and work to alleviate issues identified by practitioners.
  • Participate in testing solutions intended to optimize practitioner efficiency and usability.
  • Use knowledge in specialty clinical areas and the EHR system to provide expertise or advise on best practices for the specialty.
  • Analyze modules specifically for gaps that aren’t meeting the desired effect practitioners need.

  • Workflow Improvement (25%)
  • Monitor and analyze practitioner efficiencies by utilizing Epic available reports. Assess trends, ongoing issues and identify and codevelop solutions with the physician informatics team
  • Using knowledge of clinical workflows and application capabilities, evaluate, identify, and implement improvements to workflow or clinician processes.
  • Collate and present information to clinic leadership to facilitate informed and effective decision-making. Develop associated reports.
  • Coordinate with provider and nurse educators, population health, and other departments to improve workflow and performance.
  • Co-develop materials and documentation to capture newly implemented improvements or workflows with the training and physician informatics teams.
  • Support practitioners in adjusting, integrating, and streamlining system go-live changes and general updates into their workflows while maintaining quality patient care.

  • Program Support (20%)
  • Facilitate information systems and operational on-boarding for new users and providers outside of formal new employee classroom training.
  • Review onboarding materials or documentation for new users.
  • Recommend effective solutions to Clinical Informaticists and Analysts. Coordinate and actively participate in analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation of clinical informatics for providers, clinical support, and clinic management.
  • Represent the input and concerns of users at entity and health informatics improvement groups.
  • Maintain positive relationships and participates in regular rounding through dedicated coverage zones to promote user participation in improvement efforts.

  • Other (5%)
  • Participate in all aspects of improving the team, including education/training of other team members and contributing to process/communication improvement initiatives.
  • Work with manager to set professional goals for career development.
  • Act as back-up for other team members and functions as needed.

  • REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor's degree in applicable clinical area of practice OR Computer Science, Information Technology, Business Administration or equivalent combination of education/experience.

  • 3+ years of experience must include:
  • Demonstrated workflow experience preferably within an EHR system.
  • 2+ years of experience in a healthcare environment.

  • DESIRED
  • Previous experience in and knowledge of academic healthcare systems and/or operational environments.
  • Previous experience supporting providers in a busy outpatient or inpatient setting.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting system go-lives, upgrades, and optimization efforts.
  • Epic certification preferred, but not required.
  • College Degree desired but not required.
  • Demonstrated workflow experience with EpicCare, OpTime, ClinDoc and Orders.
  • Familiarity with Stork, Kaleidoscope, ASAP, Phoenix, Beacon and Cupid
