UW Medicine’s IT Services department has an outstanding opportunity for an Sr. Business Analyst 3 ! This is a 1-2 year temporary position that will focus on the UW Financial Transformation project.
UW Medicine’s Information Technology Services (ITS) department is a shared services organization that supports all of UW Medicine. UW Medicine is comprised of Harborview Medical Center (HMC), UW Medical Center-Montlake (UWMC-Montlake), UW Medical Center-Northwest (UWMC-NW), Valley Medical Center (VMC), UW Primary Care (UWPC), UW Physicians (UWP), UW School of Medicine (SOM) and Airlift Northwest (ALNW). In addition, UW Medicine shares in the ownership and governance of Children’s University Medical Group and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (a partnership between UW Medicine, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research and Seattle Children’s). ITS is responsible for the ongoing support and maintenance of the infrastructure and applications which support all of these institutions, along with the implementation of new services and applications that are used to support and further the UW Medicine mission.
In collaboration with UW Medicine IT Services (‘ITS’) and under the general guidance of the Assistant Director, Data Services, the primary focus of the Senior Business Analyst 3 (‘Sr. Analyst’) is planning, directing, and coordinating a data warehouse to support Harborview Medical Center, UW Medicine Montlake, UW Physicians and multiple affiliate organizations.
While all members of the Data Services Team are expected to develop a proficiency across the domains we support, Analyst areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to:
  • Guiding team members in coordinating the design, development, deployment and support of all Analytics solutions;
  • Creating and owning development and deployment processes;
  • Data analysis;
  • Upholding the communications strategy and plan for Analytics;
  • Participating in internal team development projects, enhancements and processes; and
  • Completing the intake of ITS projects by providing time estimates, attending project meetings, assigning work to team members, providing updates to manager and Project Management Office (PMO) and ensuring projects are successful.

  • RESPONSIBILITIES
    Advanced to Complex Requirements Gathering and Verification (55%)
  • Collaborates with UW Medicine partners and BI Report Developers facilitating business requirements analysis via the methodical investigation, analysis, review, and documentation of all or part of a business in terms of business functions and data needs.
  • Data analysis.
  • Manages the requirements development process through the elicitation, analysis, specification, and verification of multiple levels of requirements (i.e., business, stakeholder, and/or solution).
  • Creates viable and consumable specifications, including acceptance criteria, in preparation for the sign-off, construction, and testing of reporting solutions.
  • Coordinate deployments of Analytics solutions, to make sure they are successful.

  • Advanced to Complex Project Management and Process Improvement (30%)
  • Translates high level business requirements into detailed specifications and work plans.
  • Develops and executes work planning related to development tasks including effort and completion date estimates.
  • Performs to schedule and completes all tasks in the agreed upon timelines.
  • Works independently on assigned tasks with minimal assistance.
  • Develops and maintains supporting documentation (i.e., business requirements documents, design documents, report inventory, etc.).
  • Guides interactions with customers to communicate status, resolve issues, and obtain sign-offs (i.e., design complete, testing complete, and/or ready for promotion).
  • Performs efficient and complete hand-offs to Developers/Architects and other Analytics team members.
  • Reports work status and issues to the Manager of the Analytics Reporting team in a timely manner.
  • Manages competing stakeholder priorities to ensure the highest value is being delivered to customers.

  • Communications (10%)
  • Adheres consistently to communications guiding principles and methodology to ensure it continues to fulfill the Analytics group requirements.
  • Maintains overall Analytics communications plan and schedule.
  • Consistently utilizes the Analytics communication toolset: processes, guidelines, vehicles, tools and templates, ensuring alignment with ITS and UW Medicine branding standards.

  • Other (5%)
  • Participate in all aspects of improving the team, including education/training of other team members and contributing to process/communication improvement initiatives.
  • Mentor other analysts and team members.
  • Work with manager to set professional goals for career development.
  • Act as back-up for other team members and functions, as needed.

  • REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor's degree in Business or Health Administration, Computer Science, Information Systems, Public Health or related field. or equivalent combination of education/experience.

  • 4+ years of experience must include the following:
  • 4+ years recent healthcare or IT experience.
  • 3+ years’ experience performing progressively more complex and responsible Business Analysis and Project Management tasks. This includes the ability to simultaneously lead multiple projects with durations longer than 3-months, and level of effort estimates < 500 hours per project. These projects should have increased visibility and impact at the department leadership level.
  • 2+ years being a lead resource in projects using formal project management.
  • Ability to independently lead small projects for healthcare data analytics and apply advanced knowledge of healthcare data and terminology.
  • Strong experience coordinating a team of analysts or developers.
  • Advanced experience working through the complete report development lifecycle, including leading requirements gathering and documentation.
  • Advanced experience providing, and the ability to independently guide customers through, various systems application maintenance/support, configuration and implementation.
  • Exposure to various systems application maintenance/support, configuration and implementation.
  • Must be able to learn, understand, and apply new technologies.

  • DESIRED
  • Previous experience in and knowledge of academic healthcare systems and/or operational environments.
  • Advanced degree (e.g., Master’s, PhD, etc.)
  • Knowledge of clinical healthcare concepts and workflows.
  • Experience with Microsoft TFS.

  • CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • This is an Information Technology deadline-driven work environment.
  • The individual in this position is expected to work normal daytime hours. The work may be performed in either an office environment or by telecommuting with manager approval, during normal business hours; however, significant off-hours and weekends may be needed to resolve problems and respond to emergencies. This individual is expected to be available for emergencies (business continuity/disaster recovery efforts) on a 24x7 basis as needed.
  • Must have the ability to meet in person as directed by manager.
  • Because of the physically separated sites for UW Medicine, this position requires the ability to travel to alternative work locations as needed.
  • Must coordinate projects without direct supervisory authority.
  • Must work within the constraints of multiple technical environments.
  • ITS provides services to all UW Medicine organizations – HMC, UWMC-Montlake, UWMC-NW, VMC, UWPC, UWP, SOM, and ALNW. The individual in this position must learn many organizational structures and cultures and continually foster collaboration.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
