UW Information Technology (UW-IT) is the central IT organization for the University of Washington (UW), providing critical technology support to all three campuses, UW medical centers, and global research operations.
The UW-IT Communications team plays a critical role in helping UW Information Technology (UW-IT) support the University of Washington’s many information technology (IT) services and projects. As part of this support, UW-IT operates several web-based information and documentation platforms that include information about technology at the UW, how to use the technology tools and services that are available to students, faculty and staff, and information about the UW-IT department.
UW-IT is seeking a TEMPORARY UX professional to help reimagine and modernize our web properties and user-facing technology documentation using the principles of User-Centered Design (UCD). You will be a natural at understanding the user-centered design process and how it can be used to come up with elegant solutions to understand user needs and translate them into robust information architectures, navigation systems, and page layouts.
The User Experience Designer (UXD) will be a part of a small project team tasked with a major website overhaul that seeks to understand how UW students, faculty, staff, and researchers use our web properties. The UXD will apply user-centered design methodologies and use methods such as, but not limited to, card sorts, log stat analysis, surveys, interviews, usability studies, and other user research to discover the needs and goals of our audiences and help design and validate a web experience that incorporates the findings into the information architecture(s), navigation(s), and page layout(s) of our web properties. The UXD is responsible for the user experience aspects of the project from start to finish, which includes independently creating a plan for conducting user research, executing that plan, analysis of what is learned, and determining how to apply the information gained to the design of UW-IT web properties. The UXD will also complete other duties as assigned to support communications needs related to strategic initiatives.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Interaction Design, related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two years of experience creating web experiences that support end-user & business needs, as understood through user research.
  • Demonstrated expertise in and experience with the user-centered design process.
  • Experience in user research design and selecting appropriate research methodologies.
  • Experience conducting user research through card sorts, log stat analysis, surveys, interviews, usability studies, and other user research methods.
  • Ability to independently plan, conduct, and analyze user research studies and determine how to apply the information gained to web properties.
  • Demonstrated clear communication of complex ideas to a variety of audiences, using words, pictures, and interactions.
  • Demonstrated excellent written/oral communication skills, technical documentation skills, user liaison skills, and personal interaction abilities.
  • Excellent teamwork skills.
    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
    DESIRED:
  • Demonstrated experience in design of the holistic user experience.
  • Basic knowledge of HTML and CSS, including web semantics, and accessibility best practices.
  • Familiarity with WordPress and experience working in web content management systems.
  • Understanding of mobile-first, responsive web, and adaptive web practices.
  • Experience working with large, complex, and varied information through the user-centered design process.
