22 Line Cook Resume Examples (2026)

A line cook resume has one job: show a manager you can hold a station through a rush without dropping quality or safety. Kitchens hire on speed, consistency, and reliability, so the resume that gets a callback names the stations you have run, the volume you have handled, and the food safety habits you keep, in plain numbers a busy chef can read in ten seconds.

The examples below are real resumes turned into safe, anonymized examples, built from the skills named across 177 live line cook and kitchen job postings in Huntr's database and from the patterns in our research on 1.7 million tracked applications. None of them belongs to a single person, and each one is labeled for what it is. The page is written and reviewed by Sam Wright, who has taken more than 500 one-on-one calls with job seekers.

What Strong Line Cook Resumes Have in Common

We read the line cook and kitchen postings in Huntr's database and the resumes job seekers built against them. A few things showed up again and again. Use them as a checklist before you send yours.

  • Food safety is the first requirement, not a nice-to-have. 52 of the 177 line cook and kitchen postings we pulled name food safety, sanitation, or HACCP. A ServSafe line near the top of the resume answers the question before a manager asks it.
  • Teamwork and speed beat fancy technique. Teamwork appears in 46 postings and food preparation in 44, well ahead of any single cuisine or plating style. Kitchens want a cook who keeps the line moving and helps the station next to them.
  • Numbers make the line real. Covers per service, tickets per hour, plates off a station, health inspection results. The strongest resumes turn a shift into figures a chef can picture, not just a list of duties.
  • Stations are the vocabulary. Grill, saute, prep, pantry, fry, expo. Naming the stations you have run, and the volume you ran them at, tells a chef exactly where you fit on their line.
  • Reliability reads as a qualification. Open availability, nights, weekends, and punctuality show up across the postings. In a kitchen, a cook who shows up on time every shift is worth more than one with a longer skills list.
  • Most line cooks did not start in a kitchen. The people who land these roles come from fast food, retail, warehouses, and the military as often as from culinary school. Transferable years of standing shifts, speed, and customer pressure count, so put them to work.

Skills for a Line Cook Resume

We pulled the skills named most often across the 177 line cook and kitchen postings in our set. Group them so a chef sees the station work, the tools, and the traits at a glance, and only list what you can actually do.

Core kitchen skills: food preparation, station cooking (grill, saute, fry, pantry), knife skills, portioning, mise en place, plating, and recipe consistency. These are the job itself, and they appear in nearly every posting.

Food safety and sanitation: ServSafe or food handler certification, HACCP, temperature control, allergen handling, and cleaning routines. Food safety showed up in 52 postings, so put your certification where a manager sees it first.

Tools and stations: flat-top and griddle, grill, fryer, saute range, combi oven, walk-in and cold-holding, and the POS or kitchen ticket system. Name the equipment you have actually run.

Soft skills that matter on a line: teamwork, time management, communication, speed under pressure, cleanliness, and reliability. Teamwork alone appeared in 46 postings, ahead of any single technique.

Action Verbs for Line Cook Resumes

Start every bullet with a verb that shows the work, then attach a number. Group them by what they prove.

Cooking and service: prepped, cooked, fired, grilled, sauteed, plated, expedited, portioned, and executed.

Safety and station upkeep: sanitized, stocked, rotated, labeled, logged, and maintained.

Leadership and improvement: trained, coordinated, scheduled, ordered, and reduced (as in reduced waste or ticket times).

Weak verbs like helped, worked, and responsible for hide the work. Trade them for a verb that names what you did and a number that shows how much.

Turn a Weak Line Cook Bullet Into a Strong One

Weak

Responsible for cooking food and keeping the station clean during busy shifts.

Strong

Ran the saute station through 250-cover dinner services, holding ticket times under 8 minutes and passing every health inspection with no critical violations.

The strong version names the station, the volume, the pace, and the safety result. Same shift, but a chef can now picture exactly what you can handle.

Line Cook vs Sous Chef: What Changes on the Resume

A line cook resume proves you own a station. A sous chef resume proves you run the kitchen. Three things shift as you move up. First, scope: a line cook names stations and covers, while a sous names the whole line, the schedule, and the prep plan. Second, metrics: a line cook shows ticket times and plate consistency, while a sous shows food cost, labor, and inspection results across the kitchen. Third, narrative: a line cook shows reliability and range, while a sous shows leadership, training, and ordering. If you are aiming higher, borrow from our cook resume examples to see how the same career reads at the next level up.

Get a Line Cook Resume Past the Screeners

Even restaurant groups and staffing agencies run resumes through software before a human reads them. Keep the layout simple, one column, standard headings like Experience, Skills, and Certifications, and no text boxes or graphics that a parser can garble. Use the exact words from the posting: if it says line cook, saute, and ServSafe, those words should be on your resume. Run it through Huntr's keyword scanner to catch missing terms, then use the resume tailor to match each application to the kitchen you are applying to. Tailored resumes reach the interview stage at about twice the rate of generic ones in our data.

Line Cook Resume FAQ

How long should a line cook resume be?

One page is right for almost every line cook. Kitchens read fast, so keep it to your most recent and relevant work. If you have 10 or more years across many stations and venues, a second page is fine, but only if every line earns its place.

Do I need a ServSafe or food handler certification?

It helps a lot. Food safety appeared in 52 of the 177 postings we pulled, and a ServSafe or food handler line answers a manager's first question before they ask it. Many are inexpensive and can be earned online in a day, so list the certification and the date near the top.

How do I write a line cook resume with no experience?

Lead with food safety, reliability, and any fast-paced or standing work you have done, fast food, retail, warehouse, catering, or military. Add a food handler certification, name the volume you handled, and keep the tone honest. Chefs hire willing, food-safe, on-time people all the time.

What skills should I put on a line cook resume?

Lead with the station work and food safety a chef checks for first: food preparation, knife skills, the stations you have run, and ServSafe or HACCP. Then add the soft skills a line depends on, teamwork, speed, and reliability. List only what you can back up on your first shift.

Methodology

Every example on this page is illustrative. We do not tie any of them to a specific person or a specific interview. We build each one from the skills and requirements named across the 177 live line cook and kitchen postings in Huntr's database, plus the patterns Huntr sees across 1.7 million tracked applications, so each resume shows what a strong line cook resume looks like for a given station, venue, or experience level.

Names, restaurants, and schools are invented or swapped for comparable real ones, and every number is a realistic figure for the role, not a claim about one worker. The posting counts in each callout, like the 52 that require food safety or the 40 that name line cook work directly, come straight from that set and tell you what the example is built to match.

Conclusion

The line cooks who get callbacks all do the same few things on paper: they name the stations they have run and the volume they ran them at, they put food safety near the top, and they turn shifts into numbers a busy chef can read fast. Whether you are cooking your first line or reaching for sous, lead with what you can do on day one and tailor it to the kitchen. To build yours, start with Huntr's AI resume builder and match it to the posting with the resume tailor.
