Finance Manager

Sections

A finance manager resume earns its read in the first line, and the line that works is a dollar figure: the budget or P&L you own. Put that number at the top, then let the method underneath prove you can move it. The example here comes from a real resume that reached finance manager interviews, and the illustrative examples that follow are grounded in what employers actually ask for.

Huntr's system holds 436 finance manager resumes, and the lead example is an anonymized composite based on the ones that reached interviews. The verified set behind it is made of actual resumes rather than invented templates. Our wider research informs the approach, and the page was reviewed by Sam Wright, Huntr's Head of Career Strategy. Names, employers, and schools are swapped so no example points to a real person, and the specialty examples below are illustrative, shaped by what 1,198 real finance manager postings ask for.

What the Data Says About Finance Manager Resumes

A quick honesty note first. The finance manager interview group on Huntr is limited so far, so we treat that group as texture, not a rule. The percentages in this section come from a sturdier place: 1,198 real finance manager postings with parsed skills. That is what employers are asking for.

  • One of the interviewed finance managers in this group came up through "business controller" roles, not a straight finance manager title. The resume still read as finance leadership because the numbers led, not the job title.
  • The postings are blunt about the core four. Budgeting shows up in 32% of finance manager listings, financial analysis in 31%, forecasting in 28%, and financial reporting in 24%. Put those words on the page and back each one with a number.
  • Excel is still table stakes. Merge "Excel" and "Microsoft Excel" and it lands in 37% of postings. Do not bury it, and do not lead with it either.
  • Financial modeling appears in 23% of postings. It is a method, not a headline. Prove it inside a bullet about a forecast or a scenario, not in your summary line.
  • Lead the summary with one scope number: the P&L or budget you owned. In this set the strongest resumes anchored on total dollars managed, then let the method words follow underneath.
  • FP&A (7%), variance analysis (8%), and cash flow management (6%) are lower-frequency but high-signal. When a posting names them, mirror the phrasing back word for word.
  • Tools split the field. SAP (7%), ERP systems (6%), Power BI (6%), Tableau (5%), and SQL (9%) each show up on a minority of postings, so tailor the tools band to the job in front of you.
  • Two pages is fine for a finance manager with a decade of roles. The resumes in this group ran past one page, and none of them were penalized for it. Do not cut real scope to hit a one-page rule.
  • Degrees skew finance and accounting, with an MBA or a chartered credential turning up often. A CPA, CMA, or CFA fits here, but only one resume in this group carried a finance-specific cert, so read it as a plus, not a gate.

Why it works: This resume puts the money up front and keeps it there. Every role names a bigger budget than the last and pairs it with a result a controller could audit. See the methodology for how we build these.

The summary: It opens with scope, not adjectives: a budget over $250M and $1.2M in annual cost savings from automation that pulled month-end close in by a day. The reader knows the scale before the second sentence.

The experience: The numbers carry the story: a $250M+ supply-chain budget, the cost savings tied to a specific process change, and a climb from a leadership development program to senior regional finance manager. Each role adds dollars and adds ownership.

The skills: The list reads like a finance manager posting: FP&A, budgeting and forecasting, financial modeling, month-end close, GAAP compliance, variance analysis, plus SAP and Power BI. Method and tools, nothing decorative.

The rest of the examples are illustrative. They are built from Huntr's best-practice guidance and the skills that real finance manager postings name, so you can see how each corner of the field reads on paper. None of them is tied to a person or an interview.

A $75M R&D and operations budget owned outright, forecast variance cut from 7% to 4% in two quarters, and a budget-versus-actual review that department heads now run themselves. A CMA stands in for the years a longer career would show, and the summary is honest that leading the analysts is a new skill.

Operations finance lives in the gap between a site problem and a margin number, and this closes it.

Skills for a Finance Manager Resume

We counted the skills named across 1,198 real finance manager postings on Huntr. Start from what employers actually ask for, then keep only what the specific job description names.

Core: budgeting (32% of postings), financial analysis (31%), forecasting (28%), financial reporting (24%), financial modeling (23%). These are the words the posting itself uses, so use them back and put a number beside each.

Methods and analysis: data analysis (13%), financial planning (12%), process improvement (10%), variance analysis (8%), FP&A (7%), cash flow management (6%). Name the ones a bullet can prove, not the whole list.

Tools: Excel (37% once you merge Excel and Microsoft Excel), SQL (9%), SAP (7%), ERP systems (6%), Power BI (6%), Tableau (5%). Tailor this band to the posting, and name the system you actually close in.

How to use this: The strongest resumes mixed all three bands and led with a scope number, then tailored the set to each posting. A skills list of methods with no tools, or tools with no scope number behind them, reads half-finished.

Action Verbs for Finance Manager Resumes

Ownership: owned, ran, managed, consolidated, oversaw. Use these where a dollar figure follows: owned a $180M operating budget; consolidated five departments into one board package.

Improvement: cut, reduced, tightened, recovered, accelerated. Pair with a before-and-after: cut forecast variance from 9% to under 3%; recovered $4M in denied claims.

Build: built, modeled, automated, forecasted, reconciled. These show a manager who does the work: built a three-statement model behind a $45M refinancing; automated 40 journal entries in SAP.

The weak version of every finance bullet starts with "responsible for." The strong version starts with what you owned or moved and ends with the number.

Turn a Weak Finance Bullet Into a Strong One

Weak

Responsible for managing the budgeting process, financial reporting, and forecasting for the department.

Strong

Owned the $180M operating budget across four business units, cut forecast variance from 9% to under 3% with a driver-based model, and delivered the monthly reporting cycle in five days instead of nine.

Same job, different proof. The strong bullet answers the three questions a hiring finance leader asks: how big was the number, did you make it more accurate, and did you make it faster.

Finance Manager vs Controller on a Resume

Scope: a finance manager owns the plan and the forecast, the story of where the money is going; a controller owns the ledger and the controls, the story of where the money already is. Metrics: finance manager resumes prove budget size, forecast accuracy, and cost savings; controller resumes prove close speed, audit results, and clean controls. Narrative: if your best bullets are about close cycles, reconciliations, and audit adjustments rather than forecasts and business decisions, you may be writing a controller resume under a finance manager title.

Get a Finance Manager Resume Past the Screeners

Screeners match strings before a person reads a word. Keep the title standard (Finance Manager, not Finance Wizard), write each system by name since SAP, Power BI, and Excel are exact matches not concepts, and mirror the posting's own skill words like variance analysis and cash flow management. Run the posting through Huntr's keyword scanner to see the words you are missing, then let Resume Tailor fold the matches into your bullets. Tailored resumes reach interviews at about twice the rate of generic ones in our data.

Finance Manager Resume FAQ

How long should a finance manager resume be?

Two pages is fine. Finance managers usually carry a decade of roles, and the interview group we have seen on Huntr all ran past one page without being penalized for it. Fill the space with budget numbers and outcomes, and cut any bullet that has no number.

Do you need a CPA or an MBA to get finance manager interviews?

No, though both help. In our interview group the degrees skewed finance and accounting, with an MBA or a chartered credential common, but only one resume carried a finance-specific certification. Read a CPA, CMA, or CFA as a plus that supports your numbers, not a gate you have to clear first.

How do I write a finance manager resume without the exact title?

Lead with the money you owned. One person in our interview group came up through business controller roles and still read as finance leadership, because the budget and forecast numbers carried the resume. Write the scope you managed, the accuracy you improved, and the dollars you saved, and the title matters less.

What skills should a finance manager put on a resume?

Start from the posting. Across 1,198 finance manager postings the constants are budgeting (32%), financial analysis (31%), forecasting (28%), financial reporting (24%), and financial modeling (23%), plus Excel (37%) and a named ERP like SAP. Add the lower-frequency, high-signal terms such as variance analysis or FP&A only when the posting names them.

Methodology

The verified example is a composite of real resumes attached to jobs that reached the interview stage for finance manager roles on Huntr. We treat their patterns as texture, not a population claim, and we lean on the 1,198 finance manager postings for anything stated as a percentage. We swap names, employers, and schools for comparable real ones and check every swap against our database so no example points to a real person. Where several resumes blend into one figure we keep the numbers as written; where a single resume anchors a figure we shift it to a nearby value. The interview companies we name are real and never changed.

The specialty examples are illustrative, and every purple callout says so. Each states the number of real postings it was built from, and none makes an interview claim. Their skills come from the postings data cited above, and their shape follows what the verified resume does: a scope number in the summary, a dollar figure or a rate in every bullet, and the systems named the way postings name them.

Conclusion

The finance manager resumes that got read shared one habit: the money came first. A budget owned, a forecast made more accurate, a cost taken out, all in plain figures a controller could check. The interview group is limited, but the postings are clear, and the pattern holds. Put your scope number at the top, prove the method underneath, and name the words the job description uses.

Build yours in Huntr's resume builder, then run every application through Resume Tailor so your budget numbers match the words each posting screens for.
