Resume Examples and Guide For

Data Analyst

Sections

Data analysts get judged the same way they judge everything else: on the numbers. These data analyst resume examples show what that looks like, because a hiring manager opens your resume asking what you counted, saved, sped up, or caught, and the resumes that reached interviews answered in the first three lines. This page runs from a first analyst role to senior work at portfolio scale, with posting data behind every skill recommendation.

Of the 3,376 data analyst resumes Huntr has on file, 40 reached the interview stage, and the verified example below is an anonymized composite of those. It comes out of our research, reviewed by Sam Wright, Huntr's Head of Career Strategy. Names, employers, and schools are swapped for comparable real ones, so no example is a real person, and the labeled models after it draw on real data analyst postings.

What Data Analyst Resumes That Got Interviews Had in Common

We pulled 61 resumes from 40 people whose applications reached data analyst interviews on Huntr, plus skills from 62,963 data analyst postings. Every figure in this section comes from those two sets.

  • One resume in this set belonged to someone who spent years as a villa accountant and finance supervisor before the title at the top read Data Analyst. Another moved from ocean imports coordinator to analyst. The career changers kept their old jobs on the page and let the numbers in those jobs do the talking.
  • SQL is the one non-negotiable. It appears in 71% of the 62,963 postings we analyzed, well ahead of Python at 46%. If your resume buries SQL, fix that first.
  • Communication shows up in 55% of postings, more often than Python. Employers want analysts who can explain a chart to someone who will never write a query.
  • Power BI (32%) and Tableau (31%) split the market almost down the middle. Match the tool in the job description instead of listing every BI product you have opened.
  • Analysts in this cohort show their work like engineers: 36% of the 61 interview-stage resumes link a GitHub profile and 52% include a projects section.
  • The median resume lists 21 skills, and 85% open with a summary. People who get judged on numbers put their own numbers up front.
  • Two pages is fine. 82% of the resumes with page data run two pages or under, with a median of 1.5 pages and a median of 4 work entries.
  • Degrees skew technical but not elite: 70% list a bachelor's, about a third a master's, and 43% carry a certificate or bootcamp entry. No single credential dominates; Google Data Analytics is the most recognizable of a scattered list.
  • Excel still appears in 29% of postings. Several career changers rode heavy Excel work in operations and finance jobs straight into their first analyst title.

Why it works: It measures the analyst, not just the data. The savings figure lands in line two of the summary and every job below it earns the claim. See the methodology for how we build these.

The summary: Four sentences that quantify the person: 4+ years, 100+ Looker dashboards, about $150,000 in cost savings per quarter, and the working stack from SQL to Power BI. Scope, savings, and tools in one read.

The experience: Each bullet pairs work with a measured result: a client forecast model at 85% accuracy, personas across 10,000+ active clients, routine data requests cut 30%, 100+ LookML unit tests, and a podcast summarization model trained on 150,000+ Spotify episodes. A bootcamp certificate sits next to a chemical engineering degree, and neither apologizes.

The skills: Twenty-one skills, which matches the cohort median exactly: SQL, Python, Tableau, Power BI, Looker, Snowflake, dbt, Airflow, A/B testing, and the rest read like a posting, not a template.

From here down, every resume is a labeled model. We built them to show how each analyst specialty should read on paper, using the skills that appear most in real postings for that flavor of the job.

What it shows: Value is the metric: reporting across 14 million square feet, submarket analysis that supported a $48M acquisition later valued 11% above purchase, and 22 below-market leases flagged for $2.6M in added rent. Turning a 5-day investor report into a 1-day Tableau pipeline shows the analyst builds process, not slides.

Skills for a Data Analyst Resume

We counted the skills across 62,963 real data analyst postings on Huntr. Start from this list, then cut it to what the specific posting names.

Core: SQL (71% of postings), data analysis (62%), communication (55%), data visualization (41%), problem-solving (24%). Communication outranks Python, so write bullets that prove you can explain findings to people who do not query.

Languages and methods: Python (46%), R (20%), statistical analysis and data modeling (7% each), ETL (6%), A/B testing (3%). List the language you could defend in a live exercise, not every one you have installed.

Tools: Power BI (32%) and Tableau (31%) split the market; Excel still appears in 29%, Looker in 6%, Snowflake in 4%. Name the BI tool the posting names and back it with a dashboard count.

How to use this: The interview cohort listed a median of 21 skills drawn from all three bands. A list with SQL but no BI tool, or tools with no statistics, reads half-trained. Tailor the set to each posting.

Action Verbs for Data Analyst Resumes

Analysis: analyzed, modeled, forecast, segmented, tested. Follow with the data and the outcome: segmented 1.2M customers into a lifetime value model that now sets acquisition bids.

Automation: automated, rebuilt, migrated, standardized. Pair with time or error savings: automated 9 recurring reports in SQL, saving 15 hours a month.

Influence: presented, translated, surfaced, flagged. End on the decision: flagged a coding pattern behind $600K in annual overpayments, confirmed by audit.

The weakest analyst bullets describe queries. The strongest describe what changed because someone read the result.

Rewrite a Weak Analyst Bullet

Weak

Responsible for creating dashboards and reports and analyzing data to support business decisions.

Strong

Built 18 Looker dashboards used daily by 25 people across 3 teams, and rebuilt attribution across 6 channels, shifting 15% of an $8M budget and lifting ROAS from 3.1 to 3.8.

The weak bullet could belong to any analyst alive. The strong one has a fingerprint: a named tool, counted users, and a budget that moved because of the work.

Data Analyst vs Data Scientist on a Resume

Question: an analyst answers what happened and why; a data scientist builds models that predict what happens next. Evidence: analyst resumes prove dashboards, reporting speed, and decisions supported; data scientist resumes prove models in production and measured lift. Stack: SQL plus a BI tool anchors the analyst; Python, machine learning libraries, and experiment design anchor the scientist. If your bullets already ship models, you may be applying one title too low.

Make Your Data Analyst Resume Pass the Keyword Screen

Before a person reads your resume, software checks it for exact strings. Write SQL, Python, and Power BI the way the posting writes them, keep the title standard (Data Analyst, not Data Wizard), and carry both the tool and the skill it serves (Tableau and data visualization). Run the posting through Huntr's keyword scanner to find the gaps, then let Resume Tailor close them. Tailored resumes convert to interviews at about twice the rate of generic ones in our data.

Data Analyst Resume FAQ

How long should a data analyst resume be?

Short. 82% of interview-winning analyst resumes with page data ran two pages or under, and the median was 1.5 pages across a median of 4 work entries. Spend the space on numbers, not adjectives.

It helps more than in most fields. 52% of the 61 interview-stage resumes included a projects section and 36% linked a GitHub profile. If you are early in your career or changing into it, one documented public project is the fastest way to prove you can do the work.

What skills should a data analyst put on a resume?

Start with SQL: it appears in 71% of 62,963 postings, ahead of Python at 46%. Add communication (55% of postings), one BI tool matched to the posting (Power BI 32%, Tableau 31%), and Excel (29%). The interview cohort listed a median of 21 skills, tailored per application.

Can you become a data analyst without a data degree?

The interview set says yes. 70% listed a bachelor's degree in fields that ranged widely, and 43% carried a certificate or bootcamp entry. The career changers, from a villa accountant to an imports coordinator, made the jump by keeping their old jobs on the resume and quantifying the analysis buried inside them.

Methodology

One resume on this page is verified: a composite built from real resumes attached to data analyst jobs that reached the interview stage on Huntr, 61 resumes from 40 job seekers in all. To protect the people behind them, we replace names, employers, and schools with comparable real ones and check every replacement against our database so nothing points back to a person. Blended composites keep figures as their source resumes wrote them; when a single resume anchors an example, we move its numbers to nearby values instead. The interview and offer companies we name are real and never altered.

Everything else is a model and says so on its callout. The models exist to show shape and specialty. Their skill lists come from the 62,963 data analyst postings cited above, and their structure follows the verified set: one scope number up top and a measurement in every bullet.

Conclusion

The pattern across these 61 resumes is easy to state and hard to fake: analysts who measure everything at work also measured themselves on paper. Dashboards get counted. Hours saved get counted. Budgets moved get counted. SQL sits high on the page, the BI tool matches the posting, and half the cohort shows the work in a projects section or a GitHub link. None of that requires an elite degree; it requires treating your own career like a dataset worth analyzing. Sharpen your skills list, prep with our interview questions, and browse more real examples.
