DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION
A regional resource for clinical laboratory services required for innovative patient care, research and educational programs, the Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology combines the sophisticated testing and informatics capabilities of fully accredited laboratories with the resources of an academic institution in its delivery of clinical and anatomic pathology services. PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervision and Personnel Management: Supervision of Supervisors for the Phlebotomy and Specimen Processing Services (PSPS) within Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (DLMP) include recruitment, interviewing, hiring, training, scheduling, leave approval, and performance management, to include but not limited to corrective action, mentoring, feedback, and termination. This position with have direct and indirect staff that report to them. This shared services group comprises full and part time classified, classified non-union and hourly staff who performs all pre-analytical aspects of laboratory work to include but not limited to venipunctures of both inpatient and outpatient blood draw and intake of specimens.
Program Management: Responsible for any projects related to this shared services group to support any process improvement implementation, strategic or fiscal priorities, etc. Coordinate work to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency from staffing plans. Prioritize efforts for self and others with dynamic staffing plans in response to changing service needs. Manage other programs as department demands increase and patient needs change. Create and maintain procedures; ensure compliance with HIPAA rules and regulations regarding patient confidentiality. Design training to enhance technical and customer services skills. Ensure employee and patient safety through use of appropriate techniques and adequate training. Comply with compliance rules and regulations regarding the capture of patient data and ordering information.
Communication and Collaboration: Keep directors apprised of all concerns, developments, safety issues, unusual events and division needs. Includes the gathering of statistical data and preparation of reports. Coordinate with other areas to maintain a consistent program throughout the department. Requires the skill to encourage and sustain cooperation and cross-departmental involvement. Accept feedback and make constructive adjustments and improvements as appropriate. Conducts regular and effective meetings. Require staff to use AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, Thank you) to acknowledge and interact with patients as well as other medical center staff.
Regulatory and Accreditation Responsibilities: Maintain preparedness for all accreditation and inspection agencies, including but not limited to CAP (College of American Pathologists), TJC (The Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Hospital Organizations), and DOH (Washington State Department of Health).
REQUIRED POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
A bachelor’s degree in a related field and or equivalent combination of education and experience.
At least four years of experience as a supervisor or manager in a large clinical laboratory specimen processing operation, or with experiencing supervising or managing a large healthcare workforce.
Demonstrated ability to operationalize management directives.
Experience with process improvement and/or disciplined problem-solving methods, such as Lean or Six Sigma.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
May be required to work holidays and weekends.
Lab Medicine employees may be required to work in any of the department locations including but not limited to HMC, UWMC, hospital clinics, Fred Hutch Cancer Center, Seattle Children’s, etc.
It will be necessary to work in other departmental locations in order to meet patient service requirements, especially at Harborview Medical Center. In addition, less frequent work effort will be required at other UW School of Medicine locations (e.g., South Lake Union) and Seattle-area healthcare institutions.
Will be considered essential staff and as such will be required to report to work when scheduled despite inclement weather.
Must be able to meet with all shifts on a regular basis.
