POSITION PURPOSE
The part time (0.5 FTE) AWS DevOps Engineer candidate will have a strong background in AWS services, DevOps practices, and cloud infrastructure management. You will play a crucial role in designing, implementing, and maintaining scalable and reliable infrastructure solutions that will support Cultivate Learning, a Center with the College of Education, and their education web applications. The person in this position will play a key role in growing the Center’s technology structures, including security and cost structures, and will support the overall Cultivate Learning mission, aligned with UW policies and best practices.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Infrastructure Management
  • Design, deploy, and manage AWS infrastructure using services such as Elastic Beanstalk, Terraform, EC2, S3, RDS, and others.
  • Development and implement technology solutions that support the on-going growth of the Center’s web applications.
  • Oversee and ensure the Center’s data is backed up and processes for restoring data are documented.
  • Create and maintain documentation related to infrastructure architecture, configuration management, and operational procedures.
  • Contribute to ticketing system knowledge base.
    Monitoring and Optimization
  • Implement and maintain CI/CD pipelines using tools like Jenkins, GitLab CI, or AWS CodePipeline. Automate deployment, monitoring, and scaling processes.
  • Monitor system performance, identify bottlenecks, and optimize AWS resources to ensure high availability, scalability, and cost-efficiency.
  • Implement and enforce security best practices for AWS environments, including identity and access management (IAM), encryption, and network security.
  • Ensure policy and procedure compliance with the wider UW security policies. Coordinate with UW and College of Education IT as needed to adhere with UW policy and practices.
  • Incident Management: Respond to and resolve incidents, conduct root cause analysis, and implement preventive measures to minimize downtime and disruptions.
  • Monitor and respond to problems or emergency situations that may occur during scheduled or non-scheduled work hours.
  • Respond rapidly to client issues in live production environments.
    Cross-Team Collaboration
  • Work closely with development teams to support application deployment and troubleshoot issues related to infrastructure and applications.
  • Stay current on the latest AWS trends, issues, and advances in information technology. Learn new technologies as required.
  • Work with the Cultivate Learning’s leadership team and the College’s fiscal team ensuring accuracy of billing across budgets.
    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field and 3+ years of experience in a DevOps role with a focus on AWS.
    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • AWS Expertise: Proficiency with AWS services, including but not limited to EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda, CloudFormation, and VPC.
  • CI/CD Tools: Hands-on experience with CI/CD tools such as Jenkins, GitLab CI, AWS CodePipeline, or similar.
  • Containerization: Experience with container technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Scripting: Strong scripting skills in languages such as Python, Bash, or PowerShell.
  • Configuration Management: Familiarity with configuration management tools like Ansible, Chef, or Puppet.
  • Monitoring Tools: Experience with monitoring and logging tools such as CloudWatch, Prometheus, Grafana, or ELK Stack.
  • Security: Knowledge of AWS security best practices and compliance standards.
  • Problem-Solving: Excellent troubleshooting skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team setting.
    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Certifications AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional, AWS Certified Solutions Architect, or similar certifications.
  • Networking: Understanding of networking concepts and protocols, including DNS, HTTP/HTTPS, and VPNs.
  • Experience working with UW technology infrastructure and administrative systems.
