The Physics Department has an outstanding opportunity for a Scientific Instructional Technician 1 - Physics Labs to join their team.
Position Purpose
The Scientific Instructional Technician 1 - Physics Labs reports to the Manager of Introductory Physics Laboratories. Under general supervision, this person will coordinate equipment and lab classroom needs for teaching faculty leading up to each academic quarter and provide daily instructional lab equipment support to undergraduate courses during the academic quarters.
Position Complexities
This position requires an individual who is detail-oriented and has strong planning and communication skills, and the ability to work independently. This position requires work with real-time 3D virtual reality hardware and software. A person in this position is expected to develop troubleshooting skills in the coding and deployment of this and related technology.
Core Responsibilities
• Prepare, set up, and disassemble instructional lab equipment on a weekly basis in up to ten classrooms following pertinent safety procedures.
• Perform routine maintenance and repairs on existing equipment as needed. Determine need for and procure materials/equipment necessary for assigned course load. Keep abreast of technological advances, and recommend specific upgrades, revisions or replacements.
• Describe and demonstrate use of physical equipment and instructional software on a weekly basis to faculty and Teaching Assistants.
• Be available to assist Teaching Assistants in providing student support involving difficulty with laboratory equipment.
• Provide direction to hourly undergraduate student assistants.
• Monitor compliance with safety policy and assist in the development of safe lab procedures. May serve as Floor Warden for the first floor B Wing.
• Perform routine maintenance and support for computer hardware used in Intro Labs courses.
Minimum Requirements
A Bachelor’s Degree with major study in a basic or applied science or an equivalent combination of training, formal education and/or research, training or service laboratory operations experience.
Additional Requirements:
• Experience in an instructional laboratory or lecture/demonstration environment.
• Some experience in computer programming (Python, Java, C# etc.).
• Must be available to work occasional evenings and weekends.
• Ability to lift equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.
Desired Requirements
• Machining experience.
• Experience with real-time 3D programming (Unity).
