The School of Nursing has an outstanding opportunity for a Graduate Program Adviser.
The Graduate Programs Adviser is a key team member for the operation of the School of Nursing’s graduate programs (Doctor of Nursing Practice and graduate certificate programs). This position serves approximately 300+ full-time and part-time graduate students, and works collaboratively with various stakeholders in the school, predominately the DNP Program Director. This position requires a thorough understanding of the complexities of the school’s various degree programs, graduate education, and UW Graduate School policies.
The role is central to the Student Services team and plays a pivotal role in the strategic advancement of the School’s DNP and Certificate programs. This role carries out a student-centered advising approach that strengthens the student experience and is the first point of contact for students. The individual in this position provides students with the appropriate resources and services that will help retain and guide students throughout the program. This includes and is not limited to individual and group advising sessions, tracking academic progression, ensuring adherence to UW and School of Nursing requirements, serving as a conduit to share resources to meet students’ individual needs. This role serves as a liaison to graduate student groups and supports the School’s coordinating committee.
Under the general direction of the Assistant Director of Academic Advising, the Graduate Program Adviser will provide advising services to DNP and Certificate students and will work collaboratively to assess and improve upon the student experience within each program, and will help to ensure student progression and graduation.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Graduate Program Advising (80%):
  • Coordinate and facilitate admitted student academic advising sessions for doctoral students. Support other Student Services team members with planning of new student orientation session, with special attention to graduate DNP & Certificate Program sessions.
  • Manage DNP student/faculty mentor assignments.
  • Assess existing program, school, & university policies; suggest potential improvements to vague, outdated, or incorrect program & school policies—draft policies for motions passed by DNPCC.
  • Initiate faculty quarterly advising form to share findings with the appropriate curriculum coordinating committee.
  • Provide information to faculty on student progression, satisfactory progress, and graduation procedures and requirements.
  • Oversee student progress within the DNP & Certificate Programs. Track all learning contracts, essential warnings, probation status, and other special circumstances.
  • Coordinate annual student reviews for the appropriate program coordinating committee and work with the GPC to draft annual progress letters to all graduate students.
  • Provide mentorship & guidance to graduate students enrolled in MN, DNP, and Graduate Certificate programs.
  • Counsel students with inquiries regarding program progression, including programs of study, supervisory committees, on-leave status, graduation requirements, change of program procedures, and thesis/capstone requirements.
  • Provide support services to students which include, and not limited to registration deadlines, graduation requests through MyGrad, inform students about UW Graduate School policies, leave requests, and degree completion questions.
  • Establish supervisory committees within MyGrad. Provide warrants/applications for degrees and maintain files of abstracts.? Perform individual degree audits to ensure that student has met all program requirements.
  • Serve as the School of Nursing liaison to the Graduate School.
  • Generate MyGradProgram and other reports to track students’ scholarship and overall progression in the program.
  • Serve as School liaison for graduate student organizations, including facilitating nomination and selection of senators to the Graduate & Professional Student Senate (GPSS).?
  • Maintain graduate students’ electronic file for DNP, Graduate Certificate, and MS programs.
  • Verify the academic status of current students and confirm the awarding of degrees for graduation.
    Curriculum Coordinating Committee Support (10%):
  • Serve as the Student Services administrative support staff for DNPCC. Plan and prepare DNPCC agenda with coordinating committee chair.
  • Provide SON and UW policy information during DNPCC meetings.
  • Prepare coordinating committee reports and minutes
    Student Services Support (5%):
  • Serve as a key student services team member that provides support with student events; such as Convocation and Pinning Ceremonies.
  • Work with DNP Program Director and other staff to prepare for incoming student orientation.
  • Support the Admissions team with DNP application review, and provide advising support for prospective students.
    Miscellaneous (5%):
  • Perform other duties as required to support the ongoing mission and strategic plans of the School of Nursing
    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Baccalaureate degree in relevant field and three years of demonstrated student services administrative experience.
    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master’s degree in Education, Nursing, or related field
  • Three plus years of experience in higher education setting.
  • Knowledge of School of Nursing, Graduate School, and UW policies. Experience interacting effectively with individuals of diverse backgrounds at all levels of the University and community.
  • Understanding of UW’s advising tools, guidelines, and resources.
  • Comfortable with Canvas and other learning technology platforms.
  • Strong desire to collaborate with various stakeholders within the School of Nursing, UW, and external stakeholders.
  • Strong interpersonal and presentation skills, attention to detail, and ability to organize public events.
  • Ability to prioritize, problem solve, meet deadlines, and exercise sound judgment and independent decisions.
  • Proficient with current technology and UW systems such as MYGrad Program, SDB, EARS, and Catalyst.
  • Self-motivated, and able to take initiative on tasks/projects.
