The Division of General Internal Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Coordinator to join their team. The University of Washington’s Division of General Internal Medicine (GIM) is considered to be among the top Divisions of General Internal Medicine in the nation. The Division has a workforce of over 550, with 460+ faculty members who are known for their outstanding research, teaching and patient care.
The Division conducts its activities at the UW Medical Center (UWMC-Montlake and Northwest), Harborview Medical Center (HMC), and the VA Puget Sound Health Care System (VAPSHCS) and VA Boise, with research sites located at multiple sites across Seattle. GIM has faculty in seven academic primary care clinics as well as in neighborhood clinics located across the Puget Sound, and manages inpatients at four Seattle area hospitals.
GIM is the largest division in the Department of Medicine and includes both clinical and research functions with a total annual budget of over $110m. Faculty and staff are spread over 10+ sites around Seattle and the Puget Sound as well as in Boise, Idaho.
POSITION PURPOSE The Division of General Internal Medicine in the Department of Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Research Coordinator. This position will oversee IRB/Human Subjects requirements across all projects under the Principal Investigator and oversee recruitment efforts for active studies investigating central mechanisms of body weight regulation.
POSITION COMPLEXITIES The Research Coordinator will have major responsibilities in the management of Human Subjects applications and reporting needs that include multi-site studies, single IRB (sIRB), and coordination with collaborators. They will also be responsible for directing and implementing recruitment efforts for studies focusing on children and adults with obesity.
POSITION DIMENSIONS AND IMPACT TO THE UNIVERSITY The position requires someone with previous research experience, specifically with knowledge of IRB processes and working with human subjects. The individual is required to use independent judgment and clear and effective communication. The supervisor must have confidence in the process used and work products of this individual and rely on them for their knowledge of IRB processes, ability to be priority-driven, and to prioritize tasks to meet project goals. This individual must have excellent organizational and communication skills, as well as experience with management of recruitment data, reporting, submission and management of IRB applications, study participant recruitment and consent.
This position is based primarily at UW Medicine South Lake Union and is open to a teleworking-office model.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES IRB/HSD Activities (50%)
Serve as IRB coordinator for an active research group with multiple investigators, co-investigators, research personnel
Interact with personnel at other institutions to ensure multi-site projects have appropriate and coordinated IRB approvals
Manage Human Subjects applications and related submissions, consultations and regulatory communications for PI and collaborators. This includes the preparation and submission of new applications, study modifications, and reporting needs.
Track, manage and submit all IRB application modification and renewals. Inform and educate research team as appropriate to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
Track, compose, coordinate, and submit Data/Safety reports
Advise research team on current and new regulatory requirements.
Serve as research team’s IRB point-of-contact for all compliance, deviation from protocol and adverse event questions. Report to IRB, safety monitors or DSMB, sponsor or other regulatory agencies as appropriate.
Conduct Research (40%)
Lead recruitment efforts across multiple studies. Develop and maintain recruitment approaches, tracking and records. Devise and implement new strategies and approaches, adapting to individual study needs.
Track and facilitate timely enrollment of study participants and visit scheduling to meet project needs.
Build and maintain recruitment databases used for tracking, documentation and reporting.
Manage recruitment efforts to keep projects within scope and on time including designation of tasks among team members when necessary
Prepare summary reports of recruitment status to study team, write recruitment methods for publication and grant proposals, generate recruitment flowcharts for publication.
Assist in the preparation of annual progress reports.
Execute research procedures. Such as, recruiting, screening and assessing participants for study eligibility and MRI-safety, consenting study participants, conducting in-person study visits.
Other duties (10%)
Participate in team and project meetings, provide summary of research activities and IRB actions.
Assist in administrative duties as needed, such as onboarding new staff, advise on required trainings for working with human subjects.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
BA degree in a health sciences or related field and a minimum of 2 years of related experience.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Clinical research experience.
Experience with management of IRB applications
Ability to assess for study eligibility including MRI-safety, medical conditions and medications
Strong communication skills
Detail-oriented, pro-active and flexible
Ability to exercise sound judgement
Ability to work independently with limited supervision and part of a collaborative team
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Work, Excel, Access, Outlook)
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience working with children and adults with obesity in a research setting
Experience using RedCap or other software for data capture and organization
Experience with regulatory approvals and contract agreements related to data activities.
