The Department of Hematology and Oncology has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer- Senior to join their team.
Field of Research:
This position is engaged in cancer research, translational medicine, and immunology. Specific cancers that are researched include but are not limited to colon, breast, ovarian, lung, prostate, and bladder.
POSITION PURPOSE
The Cancer Vaccine Institute is seeking a seasoned scientist to lead our Immunologic Monitoring Core Laboratory (IML). The IML plays a central role in performing coorelative studies and measuring immunity in all clinical trials at the CVI. This includes development and implementation of immune assys and coordination, processing, and storage of samples from all CVI clinical trials. The Senior Scientist will provide strategic leadership and management of the IML, serve as an internal and external expert in the latest methods for measuring immunity. This individual will manage collaboration internally, working with multiple principal investigators and senior scientists, and manage relationships with external participating clinical trial sites. The Senior Scientist will represent the CVI at national meetings to dessiminate our latest methods and research in immuno-oncology. The Senior Scientist will lead innovation and quality improvement for the IML, bringing in new methods to advance CVI research. The Senior Scientist will oversee a team of research scientists/engineers, including hiring, performance evaluations, corrective action, developing projects, and ensuring milestones are reached. The position will be responsible for monitoring research staff skills, teaching new skills when needed, and developing laboratory skills orientation classes/seminars for incoming MD/Fellows on technologies used by the Cancer Vaccine Institute, and maintaining a high quality laboratory program. This position will also oversee communications regarding sample handling and processing with external collaborators and clinical trial sites. The position requires a strong laboratory regulatory background and experience in clinical assay execution and development. The senior scientist will develop hypotheses and draw conclusions based on expertise in technology used in research, perform data analysis, present research results at meetings and write methodological sections of grant proposals.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Leadership and Management -60%
• Plan and execute the research program and operations of the Immunologic Monitoring Laboratory.
• Serve as the lead for the IML research and technology and serve as an immunology methods expert for the preclinical laboratory.
• As IML manager, serve as part of the CVI leadership team to develop strategic planning, especially around IML functions as the clinical research program grows.
• Manage hiring, performance evaluation, and corrective action for the IML team.
• Supervise, coordinate, and evaluate the work of a team of 3 FTEs, including RSE III and RSE II. Manage workload and distribution and ensure sufficient progress is made. Develop and evaluate team member projects and provide guidance and redirection when needed.
Collaboration and Communication -20%
• Partner with CVI senior scientists to modify current methods and protocols to be in line with the latest developments in immune-oncology.
• Collaborate with CVI faculty and senior scientists to develop new research projects that leverage the vast repertoire of CVI clinical trial samples managed by the IML.
• Manage relationships with clinical trial research sites at institutions across the country.
• Participate in manuscript preparation and grant writing with principal investigators.
• Attend conferences to disseminate CVI research and methods at national conferences and bring the latest developments in the field back to the CVI for implementation.
• Work with partners in clinical trials team on logistics related to collection and shipping of human samples
• Promote and contribute to the development of teamwork in the service and working relationships between the IML and other CVI departments
Innovation and Quality Improvement -20%
• Independently apply knowledge of immunology principles to develop and implement novel methods to measure immunity.
• Serve as a national expert on novel technology and methods developed for the evaluation of cancer vaccines and other immune therapies.
• Lead quality assessment and process improvement for the IML methods and operations, and development of SOPs.
• Become an expert at IML methods and assays such as PBMC preparation, purification of specific immune cell populations, cryopreservation and thawing of cells, multiparameter flow cytometry, cytokine ELISPOT assay, stimulation and culturing of primary cells, ELIZA/Luminex assays, lymphoproliferative and cytolytic killing assays, and more
• Perform record keeping, data collection, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of results internally and with external groups through reports, manuscripts, and formal presentations
Research Sponsors/Stakeholders:
NIH, DOD, FHCC, Private Organizations and Foundations
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
• Doctoral degree in immunology or related field.
• Six or more years experience, or equivalent combination of education/experience.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
• PhD in immunology or related field
• Knowledge of current immunology literature
• Experience in cellular immunology and tissue culture, including preparation of PBMC, and flow cytometry.
• Five years of experience as a laboratory manager
• Industry and/or clinical experience related to developing CLIA-certified procedures and methodologies strongly preferred
• Excellent computer, organizational, and record keeping skills
• Excellent written and oral communication skills; including ability to write and present data orally
• Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively within an established team environment
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience in ELISPOT assays
