The Department of Periodontics has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer to join their team.
The Department of Periodontics at the School of Dentistry is one of the premier clinical training programs for periodontics in the country. The Research Scientist/Engineer 4 will design, conduct, interpret, and publish research. The research is focused upon characterizing the molecular pathogenesis and biogenesis of outer-membrane vesicle formation (OMV) in the important human pathogen, Porphyromonas gingivalis, a key risk factor in periodontitis. The Research Scientist/Engineer 4 will be responsible for conducting molecular and cell biological methods to study host-pathogen interactions including microbiological mechanisms of OMV biogenesis and role for OMVs in modulating key aspects of host innate immunity. Ideally, the Research Scientist/Engineer 4 will have a strong research track record investigating the molecular pathogenesis of Porphyromonas gingivalis. Additional important aspects of this position will require assisting the PI in maintaining the laboratory equipment in proper working order.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
(60%) Interpret, design, and conduct experiments.
• Employ cell-based innate immunity assay readouts to investigate mechanisms such as HEK-Toll-like receptor cell reporter assay and THP-1 cell cytokine read-outs.
• Biophysical analyses of OMVs using ultracentrifugation and electron microscopy.
• Isolation and preparation of bacterial lipopolysaccharides.
• Recombinant DNA gene-knockout in Porphyromonas gingivalis.
• Lipid and protein analyses of OMVs using molecular and biochemical approaches.
(15%) Design novel approaches to investigate the stated research problems when required.
(10%) Maintain domain expertise by reading research papers
(5%) Generate production-quality figures using publishing and mathematical software.
(5%) Contribute to grant submissions and manuscripts.
(5%) Maintenance and proper operation of major laboratory equipment.
• Maintenance of BSL2 anaerobic growth chamber.
• Maintenance of tissue culture facility.
• Maintenance and proper operation of major laboratory equipment including centrifuges, plate readers, luminometers, lyophilizer, thermocycler.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
• Masters in microbiology or biochemistry, immunology, molecular biology, or related field.
• Minimum of 4 years of laboratory and/or computational research experience.
• Publication preparation software experience (Adobe Illustrator, Word).
• Must have demonstrated leadership in developing new ideas and ability to publish in academic outlets. (i.e., conceptual leadership in the development of publications generated with others, and/or writing of first drafts of publications).
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
