Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that supports the independently incorporated Planned Parenthood affiliates operating health centers across the U.S. Planned Parenthood Action Fund is an independent, nonpartisan, not-for-profit membership organization formed as the advocacy and political arm of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. The Action Fund engages in educational, advocacy, and electoral activity, including grassroots organizing, legislative advocacy, and voter education. Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) is the national umbrella organization for the nation’s leading network of sexual and reproductive health care providers, educators, and advocates, serving women, men, teens and families. Planned Parenthood Action Fund (Action Fund) is the advocacy arm of PPFA and Planned Parenthood Global is PPFA’s international arm. Serving as a member of the Office of the General Counsel, the Associate General Counsel will be responsible for providing first-rate legal advice and business leadership on a wide range of mattersto PPFA, Action Fund, and Planned Parenthood Global (collectively, the “National Office”). The Associate General Counsel reports to the Deputy General Counsel. Purpose: The Associate General Counsel will be the attorney principally charged with (1) managing litigation and other legal disputes involving the National Office; and (2) advising National Office leadership regarding workplace policies, training for supervisors, and providing legal support for workforce-related contracting processes. Engagement: The Associate General Counsel will work closely with a range of clients and colleagues from across the National Offices, including other subject matter specialists and supervising attorneys within the Office of General Counsel; the National Office’s insurance and risk management team (also a part of the Office of General Counsel); leadership of PPFA’s Department of People, Culture and Equity; and business leaders from other divisions of the National Office. In addition, the Associate General Counsel will work regularly with outside counsel and other external parties on litigation matters. Delivery: The Associate General Counsel’s duties and responsibilities include: ● Litigation and Dispute resolution ○ Investigating and responding to legal claims, disputes with vendors, union grievances and workplace disputes ○ Managing litigation matters, either directly or by engaging and directing outside counsel ○ Managing litigation holds, document retention protocols and other related policies and practices ● Employment Matters ○ In close cooperation with the Department of People, Culture and Equity, updating and managing the National Office’s employment-related policy and training environment ○ Creating and delivering trainings, particularly for supervisors, and counseling individual supervisors and senior leaders on legal aspects of workforce management ○ Providing advice on the engagement and management of volunteers ● Business Transactions ○ Supporting business leaders in the negotiation and drafting of workforce-related agreements including those for independent contractors, placement and temporary staffing services, benefit providers, coaching services and in-kind staffing arrangements ● Other matters and duties, as assigned, with regard to any other aspects of the National Office’s transactional, litigation, practice management and other legal affairs Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Requirements / Expertise ● Education: Juris Doctor (JD) from accredited U.S. law school ● Bar Admission: Eligible to practice in New York or Washington, DC ● At least seven years of relevant legal experience, including experience staffing and managing a range of litigation and dispute resolution matters; experience managing outside counsel preferred ● Sound knowledge of federal, state and local labor and employment laws; specific knowledge of local law in New York City and Washington, DC preferred ● Experience with maintaining policies, practices, training and support programs related to the engagement and management of personnel, and to the maintenance of a safe and equitable workplace ● Knowledge of corporate transaction and contracting processes, including drafting, reviewing, revising and negotiating business agreements ● General knowledge of other legal frameworks applicable to the National Office, including the federal law of tax exemption and operations under state nonprofit corporations laws Competencies: ● Exceptional research, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to think strategically and creatively about legal and business issues ● Ability to provide sound business advice as well as first-rate legal counsel to business partners at all levels, including executive team and senior leaders ● Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to positively and successfully manage relationships with a diverse group of stakeholders across organizational lines ● Ability to exercise agility, adaptability, and practicality in providing legal advice ● Commitment to providing professional, authoritative, and timely legal advice and services to all clients ● Excellent judgment and proven experience analyzing risks and making risk determinations ● Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate complicated legal concepts into accessible language for a wide audience ● Ability to excel under pressure in a fast-paced, highly innovative, and rapidly changing environment ● Ability to develop strong collaborative relationships with teams including PCE, Risk Management and Managing Directors ● Knowledge of and sensitivity to different racial/ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, and people with different gender identities, cultural differences and disabilities. Travel : This position may involve occasional domestic travel. $176,000 - $187,000 a year Total offer package to include generous vacation + sick leave + paid holidays, individual/family provided medical, dental and vision benefits effective day 1, life insurance, short/long term disability, paid family leave and 401k.
