The Gravity Group in the Physics Department of the University of Washington has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer 3.
The Gravity Group has a world-class reputation for building experiments that test fundamental physics in which gravity plays a major role. Our experiments guide or constrain models involving physics from the Planck scale to the universe scale. Instrumentation developed in our lab is improving the detection of gravitational waves. On the applied side some of our instrumentation opens new directions in seismology. The research component of this position will be in-person and onsite support of the experiments supporting Experimental Gravitational Physics. The position is hybrid, 4 days per week onsite, 1 day remote.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Design, modify, and operate existing torsion balance experiments (25%).
Develop and implement new and existing instrumentation as a team member in the LIGO experiment (25%).
Oversee development, design, and validation of data collection and analysis tools (20%).
Produce reports of research results and other pertinent information in the form of publications and public presentations (10%).
Oversee UW graduate students and undergraduate students within the laboratory (10%).
Travel to LIGO sites and collaboration meetings, attending scientific conferences (5%).
Perform related duties as required (5%).
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s degree in a related field and four years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education/experience.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Experience designing and building instruments.
Experience in mechanical design, optical design, electronic design.
Experience in statistical data analysis.
Demonstrated ability to make clear presentations and write papers, reports.
Desired:
Familiarity with the latest developments in fundamental physics.
PhD in experimental Physics.
