School of Dentistry has an outstanding opportunity for Research Scientist/Engineer 4.
The Department of Oral Health Sciences (OHS) brings together faculty from different ends of the dental and oral health research spectrum into a single department that has expertise ranging from the modern experimental life sciences through the public health and behavioral sciences. OHS has the goal of improving the oral and general health and well-being of our diverse global population through research, teaching and service. OHS has a broadly defined mission that accommodates diverse faculty interests and expertise. At present, OHS enjoys faculty expertise in areas including anatomy, biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology, biostatistics, epidemiology, behavioral science (basic and applied), public health, dental hygiene, education, law, medicine, and clinical dentistry including faculty members with specialty training in periodontics, orthodontics, and oral medicine. OHS also sponsors the School of Dentistry’s only PhD program as well as the combined DDS-PhD program and the Masters of Science program for Dental Hygiene. Our graduate programs provide advanced interdisciplinary training for graduate students to enable them to become academic and research leaders in the dental and craniofacial sciences, and to contribute to improved understanding of human oral and systemic health and disease. This position must be able to work independently and with little oversight on multiple aspects of large federally-funded research projects. The research scientist will be responsible for managing research staff and students; providing scientific expertise on all elements of research including project development, planning, coordination, and evaluation; managing budgets and timelines; assuring project compliance with funding agency, university regulatory offices, and local entities; managing IRB activities; collecting, analyzing, and interpreting qualitative and quantitative data; disseminating findings through manuscripts, reports, and conference presentations; contributing intellectual expertise to the development of new grants and projects; and providing mentorship to junior researchers and staff.
Part of the job will involve working on site (e.g., Alaska Native communities, rural communities in Washington state), which requires the ability to be away from home for many weeks at a time, the ability to carry heavy equipment (e.g., 50 pounds), driving a vehicle, and living in rough conditions that exist in study communities (e.g., sleeping on floor, no running water).
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Grants & Study Oversight (40%)
• Collaborate with PI to carry out funded research grants.
• Collaborate with PI to develop new ideas for grant proposals. Draft proposals and prepare paperwork for new grant submissions
• Lead author, co-author and submit manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals
• Draft and submit progress reports and other research documents to funding and regulatory agencies
• Analysis and Reporting
• Write and complete interim reports for PI, NIH, and IRB
• Develop presentations, posters, and manuscripts and conducting literature reviews
• Take the lead on writing and submitting manuscripts
Data Analysis, Abstraction and Management (30%)
• Perform data analysis and develop analysis tools; ensuring the quality control of data. Design databases to optimized data collection efficiency
• Responsible for editing and modifying data entry forms and managing complex data synthesis for managing and processing hard copy and electronic data collection materials
• Manage data coordination and collection activities and data security protocols across multiple study sites
• Organize training and calibration exercises prior to data collection
• Manage data and overseeing data repository
• Maintain quality assurance and integrity of quantitative and qualitative data
Operations Design, Documentation and Action (20%)
• Contribute to the design and implementation of studies. Develop and implement study protocols, manual of operations, quality assurance plan, and other research plans
• Oversee IRB documentation and reporting
• Develop and implement strategies and action plans to ensure protocol adherence
• Responsible for implementing and managing quality assurance and quality improvement plan and reports
• Oversight of study timeline goal posts for study completion
• Problem solve to improve mechanics of study procedures and intervention
• Track progress of studies, including recruitment of participants and follow up
• Prepare training materials for study staff, manual of operations and study protocols for federal agencies, and other study documents
Supervision and Participants (10%)
• Manage research coordinators and other research staff and volunteers
• Coordinate and oversee data collection at study visits from study participants
• Liaise with local study sites and maintain strong connections
• Coordinate weekly and monthly lab meetings
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
• Master's degree in public health (MPH) with an emphasis in epidemiology and 4 years of experience in project evaluation and community-based coordination.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Experience working in Alaska Native communities on behavioral interventions in dentistry with related experience in data collection and analysis
• Scientific manuscripts published in high-impact factor journals
• Excellent logistic, coordination, scheduling, and organization skills
• Excellent verbal communication and written communication skills
• Experience with community-based data collection and partnership building
• Strong quantitative and qualitative data analytic skills with ability to analyze data independently
• Experience with leadership experience in coordinating NIH-funded studies
• Experience with app-based technology and working with software/app development companies on NIH-funded studies
• Experience working on research with families of children with special health care needs, with an emphasis on teens with autism
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
• Proficiency in statistical software (e.g., SAS, Stata, R, SPSS, Dedoose)
• Highly motivated, personable self-starter who excels in taking the lead and in working independently
• Experience managing, motivating, and leading staff on research projects
• Identifies problems, work tasks, identifies next steps and completes tasks, derives solutions and recommendations independently
• The ability to lift 50 pounds and travel to study sites (away from Seattle) for short- and long-term study assignments with spartan accommodations.
