Job Description

Girls Who Code is seeking enthusiastic instructional Advisors for our 2024 Self-Paced Program. Our curriculum is designed to educate, inspire, and equip high school girls and non-binary students with the skills and resources to pursue academics and careers in the technology and engineering sectors, as well as build bravery and confidence. Our flexible virtual program is unique in its approach by offering students across the country to participate in a self-paced computer science class that includes asynchronous instruction with weekly synchronous support and community-building opportunities. Students in our beginner-intermediate level course offerings will have 6 weeks to complete class projects focused on HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Python in our web development, cybersecurity, and data science courses. We believe all girls and non-binary students have the interest and ability to code. Our Self-Paced Program Advisors encourage, nurture, and mentor students through our program. Each Advisor will support one cohort of around 250 students over the course of 6 weeks toward success. Advisors will be responsible for attending 6-7 hours of synchronous calls each week including facilitation of SPP Advisor and Partner Events, Student Hours, meetings with their Advisor Team and Instruction Manager, and weekly Roundtables. Self-Paced Program Events (internally referenced as SPP Events) are a chance to build community with community-building activities and content-driven programming challenges. Student Hours are an opportunity for students to get additional synchronous support while also allowing students to complete projects in a collaborative virtual co-working space. Applicants must be a rising senior in college (or equivalent level of experience) at the start of the program. The Salary for this position is $30 an hour.

Responsibilities

• Advise and support one cohort of around 250 high school girls and non-binary students through the completion of a Self-Paced Summer Program by maintaining an exciting, engaging, and accessible virtual environment.
• Meet with your Advisor Team weekly to share classroom notes/observations, plan the next SPP Event, and review student feedback.
• Review GWC-provided materials for SPP Events and Student Hours, and adapt those materials as needed to effectively facilitate your upcoming Events and Student Hours.
• Schedule and co-facilitate SPP Advisor and Partner Events to engage in sisterhood activities or icebreakers in order to build stronger relationships.
• Schedule and co-host live events and sessions with other Advisors to troubleshoot students’ questions, review misconceptions, or provide debugging tips based on projects.
• Support in the completion of administrative duties including tracking student progress, administering programmatic surveys to students, and completing daily and end of program surveys in a timely fashion. Note: You will share responsibilities with your Advisor Team.
• Review student project submissions and provide them with supportive and constructive feedback. Note: You will share review responsibilities with your Advisor Team.
• Facilitate community and discussion in our Girls Who Code Self-Paced Program Discord server by posting engaging questions, updates, and responding to questions and student posts. Note : You will share moderation responsibilities with other Advisors and the Discord Moderator.
• Act as a representative of Girls Who Code in SPP Events and during Student Hours.
• Effectively address students’ challenges and questions via Zoom, Discord, and Student Hours to ensure that all students are engaged and actively learning course material.
• Communicate regularly and effectively with all Girls Who Code staff to support seamless delivery and execution of tasks and activities.
• Understand and follow all escalation procedures for any student issues that arise during the program.
• Always act with maturity and appropriate discretion when interacting with students, other teaching staff, family members/guardians, and corporate partner contacts.
• Meet with the supervising Instruction Manager on a weekly basis to review feedback and check in on student progress or concerns.
• Attend weekly Roundtable presentations for continuous professional development throughout the program.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in their final year, or have already received a BA or BS in computer science or a related field by the start of the program.
• Experience with at least one programming language, Python preferred. Our curriculum teaches HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Python. While you will not be delivering lessons you will be supporting students during Student Hours and help them troubleshoot their projects.
• Interest in and/or desire to learn more about Cybersecurity and Data Science.
• Must be coachable and model a growth mindset. Advisors should be willing to provide, accept, and implement feedback about their or their Advisor Team’s facilitation or classroom management approach in order to better serve the needs of students in the program.
• Effectiveness and patience in guiding Girls Who Code activities, keeping discussions on track, and thinking quickly/creatively in the face of unexpected questions or comments.
• Ability to adapt to various learning styles and honor individual differences of students in a virtual classroom.
• Must be able to collaborate with other team members and share responsibilities.
• Strong time management and organizational skills.
• Exceptional communication skills.
• Timeliness and dependability in attendance throughout the program, including all training sessions prior to program start and post-program reporting requirements.
• Believe that all girls and non-binary students can code!

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous teaching, tutoring or mentoring experience, especially in computer science is strongly preferred
• Experience facilitating and discussing Cybersecurity and/or Data Science topics and/or lesson plans
• Experience with facilitating virtual zoom meetings and navigating online learning platforms
• Experience within academically and culturally diverse classroom communities

• SPP will run from June 24th through August 16th, 2024 . Please note these dates are inclusive of Week Zero and the grading week after the program ends.
• DETAILED BREAKDOWN
• Prep week: June 24 - June 28 (up to 10 hours)
• Training dates : June 11-13, 2024; Advisors are paid for attending the training and completing all deliverables. Training will be a mix of asynchronous and synchronous sessions (18 hours)
• Program dates with students: July 1 through August 9 (up to 30 hours per week)
• Grading week : Last Advisor working day - August 16
