This Executive role will be based in our home office in San Antonio, TX.
The Head of Executive and Employee Communications oversees USAA’s executive and employee communications functions to support USAA’s mission and business objectives. Areas of responsibility include: insurance and bank communications, executive leader communications, and employee communications including enterprise initiatives, content, channel, technology and advocacy.

The Opportunity What you’ll do:

  • Identifies and manages existing and emerging risks that stem from business activities and the job role.
  • Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled.
  • Follows written risk and compliance policies, standards, and procedures for business activities.
  • Accountable for developing an integrated and innovative communications strategy which drives business results.
  • Demonstrates executive level thought leadership, strategy development, and operational planning.
  • Fosters positive relationships between Corporate Communications and the businesses and collaborates closely with leadership in support of business objectives.
  • Creates strong team unity and an engaged workforce where every employee takes personal responsibility for USAA’s mission.
  • Serves periodically as an executive sponsor for USAA programs.
  • Travels on behalf of USAA and represents the brand at publicly sponsored events.
  • Builds and oversees a team of employees for assigned functional area through ongoing execution of recruiting, development, retention, coaching and support, performance management, and managerial activities.
  • Provides strategic communications counsel, with the ability to influence at all levels, and establishes and directs internal communications plans/programs to executive leadership in support of business objectives, USAA’s mission, reputation and enterprise goals.
  • Provides executive oversight on the design and implementation of communications strategies and tactics to ensure that clear and consistent messages reach appropriate audiences.
  • Develops appropriate effectiveness measures for all communication efforts, adapting in response to data.

What you have:

  • Bachelor’s degree Communications, Public Relations, Business or Journalism OR 4 years of related experience (in addition to the minimum years of experience required) may be substituted in lieu of degree.
  • 10+ years of experience in corporate communications, public affairs, media relations, and/or internal company communications function with a proven track record designing and implementing enterprise-wide communications.
  • 8+ years of people leadership experience in building, managing and/or developing high-performing teams.
  • Experience in a leadership position supporting C-level executives or board members and providing and leading major communications programs.
  • Experience collaborating with key resources and stakeholders, influencing decisions and managing work to achieve strategic goals.
  • Proven strategic thinker and savvy communicator.
  • Demonstrated executive-level business acumen across a variety of industries and complex topics.
  • Ability to set high standards for excellent customer service to both internal and external customers, and coach team members to deliver the same.
  • Ability to identify and manage risk. Understanding of legal, compliance and regulatory issues applicable to the financial services industry.
  • Demonstrated experience in content, digital and social media, with ability to rapidly adapt to new technology and platforms.

What sets you apart:

  • Relevant experience in a large financial institution ($100 billion +) or Fortune 100 company &/or PR Agency in a senior executive role within a corporate communications department.
  • Deep experience in a communications leadership role directly supporting a CEO and/or the broader C-Suite leadership.
  • Demonstrated accomplishments leading transformation across a large communications organization.
  • Ability to drive technology change, especially automation, for greater efficiency in the operating model.
  • Creative campaign management that communicates and drives change with a diverse set of stakeholders.

Compensation:

USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market position. The salary range for this position is: $238,900 - $430,000.

Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance or at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.

Long Term Incentive Plan: Cash payment for Executive level roles only, representing a cash payment which is both time and performance based.
