Position Summary

Marqeta’s platform enables payment authorization decisioning, cardholder data security, instant card issuing, in-app provisioning directly to digital wallets, and real-time funding with our exclusive Just-in-Time (JIT) funding.
The VP, Software Engineering - Issuing & Processing (I&P) Accounts Platform, owns execution of the product roadmap to deliver value and success for customers and the business. Specifically, this leader owns the services for account and user management which define the controls for card usage and transaction processing, as well as owning our General Ledger service. This role is responsible for ensuring we are executing with a high degree of polish, that we have the right telemetry to ensure customer success in meeting our SLA’s and that our people are engaged and understand their purpose. This requires experience building the right team to deliver on the product and engineering vision, executing on the product roadmap, and aligning our team’s success with customer and business success. This is a people manager role.
What You'll Do
- Provide organizational leadership across broad technical areas including account management, user management, control systems, and our general ledger.
- Working with our Technical Fellows, champion and evangelize the architectural vision for an organization driving continuous delivery that provides measurable value to customers.
- Scale Marqeta’s issuing and processing systems to support multiple orders of magnitude transactional growth, while at the same time reducing human and infrastructure costs to support.
- Make simple, for both our customers and for ourselves. Develop testable, scalable, trustworthy systems that eliminate manual tasks from the financial industry.
- Leadership and collaboration with Engineers and Engineering Managers including assignment management, hiring, mentorship, and performance management. Ensure our people understand their purpose, why we’re doing what we’re doing and create the environment for high engagement.
- Lead and grow the Engineering team, while collaborating with the Product Management team to deliver a Card Issuing & Transaction Processing platform that increases user engagement and delights our customers.
- Uplift those around you and make Marqeta better through your presence. Mentor other engineers on the team, drawing on your experience to provide thoughtful direction.
- Drive the engineering culture so every team member deeply cares about team velocity, quality, trust, recruiting, and delighting our customers.
- Drive performance, scalability and resiliency through our products and into the DNA of the organization overall.
- Drive the technical culture so every team member obsesses about scale, performance, security, APIs and ease of use.
What We're Looking For
- 10+ years of engineering leadership experience.
- Demonstrated experience and success with leading Engineering organization for an externally-facing Platform with hyper growth and managing architectural change.
- Demonstrated ability to sell the "why" to teams and build a product that we're proud of and our customers love. Ability to influence other senior leaders, including Product as well as Engineering. Align to a set of discoverable base principles.
- Operational Rigor and thoughtfulness in addressing the root cause of systemic issues rather than treating symptoms.
- Demonstrated strength and experience in engineering planning and organization design.
- Data driven - strength and experience in defining and delivering KPI's for quality and productivity with automated mechanisms for transparency and visibility.
- Track record of building high performing engaged teams. Talent magnet for experienced Engineers and Engineering management. Strong track record of growing internal talent.
- Intellectually honest - balanced view on your own capabilities and where they augment gaps with strong talent

- Extensive background in building engineering plans and strategy, communicating effectively through documentation and presentations to internal stakeholders and customers
- Deep experience with the software development lifecycle; ability to adjust and apply this knowledge in a dynamic environment using agile methodologies.
- Ability to establish credibility and rapport with senior executives and technical and non-technical team members alike.
- Outstanding organizational, communication, and relationship building skills conducive to driving consensus; able to work well in a cross-functional, matrix management environment.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, organizational and time management skills. Ability to communicate effectively to distinctly different audiences, both internal and external customers, from engineers to CEOs.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/Software Engineering or equivalent work experience.
