We’re looking for a Senior Legal Counsel, Litigation at Monzo. This role will have day-to-day responsibility for managing all litigation matters associated with Monzo’s business in the UK, reporting to Monzo’s Head of Legal, UK and Group General Counsel and Company Secretary.

You will work across the organisation in close partnership with a wide range of our business areas, our customer facing teams and our functional teams such as financial crime, finance and risk and control with a strong focus upon leading and managing Monzos’s litigation portfolio, providing contentious advisory support and managing any internal and external investigations. This role will form part of the Legal team in the Legal & Board Governance Collective at Monzo.

Role responsibilities:

  • Working with the Head of Legal and the General Counsel to advise on all contentious risk and litigation related matters arising from Monzo’s business with a particular focus upon consumer banking litigation related matters
  • You will coordinate all litigation and investigations related matters with other relevant stakeholders and teams across Monzo including the Compliance, Risk, other control functions and business teams supporting this business on relevant matters
  • You will help strategically advise the Board Audit Committee, the Legal team and the wider Executive team in developing frameworks, policies and procedures relevant to proactively manage Monzo’s litigation and contentious risk matters
  • You will actively support Monzo’s Head of Legal UK in building a world-class and scalable, high performing Legal team to support Monzo’s litigation and contentious advisory support
  • You will manage relationships with our external legal panel and other 3rd parties working with the Chief of Staff of the Legal & Board Governance Collective to ensure we are optimising our legal spend on litigation and investigation matters and extracting best value.

You should apply if:

  • You have a solid period of post-qualification experience in the field of banking and/or financial services litigation and investigations (i.e. at least 4-5 years PQE)
  • You have outstanding technical skills and strong knowledge of contentious advisory matters, litigation and investigations having spent time in private practice and ideally time in house at a bank and/or financial technology company in a litigation and/or investigations role.
  • You are a strategic thinker, a strong communicator and a keen problem solver who knows how to assess risk and recommend solutions that balance business and risk perspectives
  • You are happy handling the widest range of legal issues that may arise even outside your core areas of expertise, and can sensibly assess when best to engage external counsel in a cost-effective way.
  • You are comfortable operating at all levels of the organisation up to the Executive Committee and the Board but can also roll your sleeves up and get things done within the wider team
  • You’re passionate about the intersection of banking and technology and the transformation unfolding in consumer finance and the future world of work practice, and what we are doing here at Monzo excites you!
