Position Summary

The VP and Senior Corporate Counsel in this position will be part of the Marriott Law Department and will work in the Shanghai office, reporting to the Vice President & Assistant General Counsel for China.

This position is responsible for providing legal support to the departments and disciplines that oversee the consumer-facing parts of the Company including Global Brand Management, Marketing, Sales, Revenue management, eCommerce and Consumer Insights (“Consumer Operation”) in mainland China.

This position will work on multiple projects in locations throughout Mainland China. He/She will be required to develop a comprehensive understanding of Marriott's consumer operation techniques and practices, and deal with a broad array of topics, including consumer operation, joint ventures, and risk-management covering MI’s full-service (such as Marriott, Renaissance and Sheraton) hotels, luxury hotels (such as Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis and Bulgari hotels), select-services Courtyard hotels, franchise operations, and branded residential products.

The position provides legal support to Marriott-operated hotels, and works with corporate departments and disciplines on various system-wide issues and initiatives. The work principally takes the form of providing commercial transactional support (such as negotiating, drafting and interpreting numerous types of contracts) and providing legal guidance on a variety of matters where knowledge of the hotel industry, Marriott’s strategic objectives, various hotel-related disciplines, and certain legal subjects is essential.

The position will also provide some support and guidance related to Compliance issues and regulations as it relates to the business operations.

Sample of matters to be worked on by this position include:

• Compliance with the local laws and regulations applicable to CO functions, including cyber security laws and personal information protection laws;
• Business transient agreements, group sales contracts, intermediary contracts and travel management company contracts;
• Global brand management across all 30+ company-brands;
• Global marketing (including sponsorships, promotions, sweepstakes and social media);
• Loyalty program- Marriott Bonvoy (including working with CEC and Loyalty team on the guest complaint matters);
• Consumer insight & revenue management (including antitrust issues relating to sharing of information with franchised hotels);
• Cluster arrangements;
• Channel strategy & distribution (including agreements with online travel agencies);
• Particular contracts or specific issues as part of a broader team that provides general legal guidance to corporate departments or disciplines on various system-wide issues and initiatives;
• Developing relevant form agreements and policies; and
• CO planning & services (including all the digital CO matters).
