Job Description
SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.
MANAGER, BUILD AND INTEGRATION ENGINEERING (SUPER HEAVY BOOSTER)
Build Engineering is responsible for all manufacturing, test, and integration of the Starship production line. We build and integrate a remarkable diversity of mechanical hardware and electronics in-house, thus the challenges we face as we scale our product throughput are unique. This role will flex heavily across integration, test, and design - including managing the teams directly responsible for the physical builds and installation of integrated systems at multiple levels of vehicle build. These systems encompass a wide range of pressurized components, avionics, structures, tooling design, and processes (welding, tube bending, pipe fitting, large part movement, and large structure integration) to rapidly build, integrate, and maintain early versions of the Super Heavy vehicles and Raptors and associated facilities to build them. We are looking for entrepreneurial and driven professionals to join our world-class team and help solve some of the most dynamic production and operational challenges found in technology development.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Serve as focal point and ultimate decision-maker for integration build engineering and associated projects and schedules within the Super Heavy Booster organization
- Lead a team of exceptionally talented build engineers to advance the course of production, utilizing state of the art technologies and Lean manufacturing principals to achieve industry changing levels of design feedback, tooling improvements, cost efficiency, process and product reliability and change introduction speed
- Act as a technical decision maker and advisor to the team on manufacturing techniques such as precision hardware installation and integration, subassembly build, design for integration, project and vehicle scheduling, testing, and painting and insulating processes
- Create collaborative business plans with design engineering, upstream production, and support teams and develop and maintain positive supplier/customer relationships.
- Work with cross-functional teams to increase production throughput and meet manifest demands, while maintaining the highest possible standards of quality
- Identify, recruit, and develop individual contributor talent and leadership within the organization
- Continually develop and manage engineering capacity, schedules, and project plans in order to support vehicle manifest as well as a diverse and variable R&D demand
- Drive implementation of integration facilities and staffing within new production and launch processing facilities both in Brownsville and Cape Canaveral
- Institute department-wide manufacturing and production metrics, to measure and then optimize productivity in all areas
- Identify and drive implementation of high-volume manufacturing efficiencies to a lower volume environment
- Act as a forcing function for excellence and aggressively focus on process optimization in every element of the design and production process within the area
- Lead design for assembly/manufacturing initiatives in order to influence product designs appropriately
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical, manufacturing, aerospace, or other technical discipline
- 3+ years of industry product or process design/development experience, specifically focused within production or integration systems
- 3+ years of experience performing fabrication, assembly and/or testing
- 2+ years of experience in a leadership position
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- High degree of comfort on the factory floor, working to identify and execute efficiency improvements in all aspects of production and manufacturing
- Significant exposure to a wide variety of fabrication, integration, and testing methodologies
- A proven track record of leadership and team building within a rapidly changing environment
- Experience in a high volume/high complexity production background such as automotive, commercial aviation, or consumer electronics
- Consistent record of exceptional personal achievements and contributions that have supported career progression to-date
- Demonstrated examples of serving as leadership focal point and decision-maker at an executive level
- Experience in top-tier product companies, with a reputation for excellence in technology and product quality
- Experience in both sub-assembly production and final vehicle assembly/test experience
- Experience managing a team of experienced and newly qualified engineers in a manufacturing environment
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Flight hardware typically is built in tight quarters and physical dexterity is required
- Ability to perform job duties that require standing, kneeling, crouching, twisting upper body, working in cramped positions in small openings and climbing hand over hand
- Typically exposed to work in extreme outdoor environments – heat, cold, rain
- Work performed in an environment requiring exposure to fumes, odors, and noise
- Schedule varies depending on site operational needs; flexibility required
- Flexibility to travel to remote build or design sites
- Ability to pass Air Force background check for Cape Canaveral
ITAR REQUIREMENTS:
