Job Description

Product Counsel–Fleet and Federal (Public Sector)

What we do

Uptake is the premier Industrial Intelligence company, providing industrial analytics and data software-as-a-service (SaaS) that empowers major industry leaders and public sector clients to optimize performance, reduce asset failures, and enhance safety. At Uptake, we combine our strengths — machine learning, analytics, data visualization, and software development — to deliver actionable insights that make industry more reliable, productive, safe, and secure.

What you’ll do

This is your opportunity to expand your skills and set yourself on a path for career growth. As our product counsel for Fleet and Federal (Public Sector), you will report directly to the Chief Legal Officer and you will work closely with engineering, product, sales, marketing, operations, finance and others as you become acquainted with our fleet and federal products. You will be the first point of contact for these two product lines and you will be responsible for providing strategic legal advice on a wide variety of issues ranging from contract negotiations and drafting to marketing, IP, regulatory, compliance, international, and any other legal issues that might arise. You will, in essence, be a mini-GC for these two important products. Does that sound like a lot? It is. But don’t worry. We will help. You’ll work closely with the CLO and external subject matter experts to ensure we are delivering consistent and top-quality legal work that will help drive the business to success, and to ensure that you are constantly learning and growing as an in-house legal leader. Your success is our success and we want you to succeed.

About our Fleet Product: Uptake Fleet provides predictive maintenance analytics for on-highway trucking. We help our customers maximize asset reliability and availability with data-driven insights. By using our product, customers also are able to optimize their labor effort and inventory by only performing work that’s necessary and buying parts that they need when they need them.

About our Federal (Public Sector) Product: Our public sector product is similar to fleet except that here, our mission is to ensure that military and government customers have safe, effective, and reliable platforms and vehicles. Uptake optimizes the readiness and safety of those who support and defend us, while reducing costs across, local, state, and federal government agencies, including within the U.S. Department of Defense.

Qualifications

  • J.D. from an accredited law school and an active license to practice law in good standing in at least one state
  • Willingness and ability to secure limited admission to the IL bar for in-house counsel pursuant to Illinois Supreme Court Rule 716, if required by the applicable rules of professional conduct
  • Government contracts experience is an advantage for any candidate for this role
  • 5-7 years experience, including 1-2 years of general in-house practice
  • Experience working with technology clients is required
  • Because this role will include U.S. government work, you must be a U.S. citizen
  • A positive attitude and a willingness to learn new things
  • An ability to manage multiple projects at any given time, working within a fast-paced environment, often with very short deadlines
  • Able to build strong relationships with employees at all levels of Uptake
  • Ability to be strategic, calibrate risk, identify important issues quickly, and develop practical and effective solutions to help Uptake achieve its goals.
  • Ability to explain legal issues in simple, non-legal terms in order to effectively communicate and collaborate with colleagues across the business
  • Able to quickly identify issues, focus on what matters most, and come up with effective solutions
  • A willingness to express your own opinions and points of view, and an ability to effectively work toward common goals even in the face of disagreement.
  • Initiative–an ability to desire to ask questions and stay ahead of issues.
  • Empathy–an ability to listen to, understand, and respect your co-workers, clients, external service providers and anyone else you might interact with no matter how different they may be from you.
