Job Description

COVID-19 continues to significantly impact our employees, families and communities. With employee health and safety as our top priority, and as a federal contractor, Lockheed Martin is taking action to address the increased risk and uncertainty COVID variants pose in the workplace and ensuring we meet our commitments to national security.
To uphold safety for all employees, we will continue to request vaccination status for all Lockheed Martin employees including new hires. All current and newly hired employees who are unvaccinated will be required to adhere to onsite safety protocols.
Description:When you join OPCoE (Optical Payload Center of Excellence) you will be part of one of the most innovative and fastest moving organizations in Space. OPCoE enables new frontiers in visible-light and infrared systems, missile defense, space exploration, and much more. Our members bring together authorities across the nation, within Lockheed Martin, our industry partners and leading research universities, into one fast-acting, collaborative group. Within our fast-paced build-test-learn lifecycle designed to meet go-fast program needs, we have an appetite to approach problems differently to enable big missions in small vehicles. If you’re a creative engineer looking to help lead the next generation of missions, we want you to join our team!
As the OPCoE Chief Architect, you will have a critical role, reporting to the Director of Strategy, Pursuits, and Capture to provide technical leadership across electro-optical mission areas and capabilities. In this role you will support business growth through the development and review of concept system designs, generation of product roadmaps, and by providing support to major proposal activities. You will work directly with space vehicle and ground segment leadership to manage and allocate requirements, formulate analyses needed for finalization of the architecture and system/subsystem/assembly elements, and the interfaces between those elements.
Specific responsibilities include:
• Architect electro-optical payload solutions for major system pursuits.
• Lead the engineering staff to complete the design process from initial concept to full-blown product offering.
• Review teammate architectures for alignment with best technical practices, common product usage, and strategic positioning.
• Lead development of product roadmaps - define high value future offerings and the investment pathway to develop those offerings.
• Work across mission areas to understand cross-cutting electro-optical product needs
• 20% Travel will be required to interface with team and suppliers as needed.
We are looking for someone with an exceptional work ethic, the ability to communicate complex concepts, and a creative approach to problem solving.
Basic Qualifications:
• Experience in the development of sophisticated electro-optical sensor systems from design through assembly, integration, test and/or delivery
• Experience acting as a liaison with customers, program personnel, and/or leadership
• Experience with multiple electro-optical mission areas (ISR, OPIR, Weather, etc.)
• US citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI with Poly clearance
Desired Skills:
• Current TS/SCI clearance with Poly
• Demonstrated hands-on expertise in space OR complex hardware/software systems
• Demonstrated experience with developing and implementing focal plane arrays (FPAs). For passive EO, both staring and scanning FPAs in the visible and IR domain. For active EO, multiple types of lidar receiver arrays, primarily GmAPD.
• Demonstrated experience with payload electronics. This may include payload controllers, image data processors, mission data routers, sensor bias and interface electronics, and laser/lidar controllers.
• Demonstrated experience in signal chains. A signal chain typically refers to the command and routing/processing/dissemination of mission data. There are usually multiple components that encompass a signal chain: front end E-O convertor (i.e., focal plane), image data processor, image data router, and image data storage
• Demonstrated experience in developing calibrators, optical components and developing/evaluating optical coatings. We work with a range of optical systems starting from the sub-meter class through apertures greater than 1.5M.
• Demonstrated experience in developing active EO (lidar systems). We work with fiber and planar waveguide lasers. These lasers output a range of power densities that encompass use in long range imaging applications all the way through directed energy applications.
• Have experience in developing space qualification plans for components
• Excellent communications skills both verbal and written with the proven ability to communicate
• Demonstrated ability to drive closure and resolve complex technical issues/challenges.
