SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

In 2018, we established the Education Policy Center, with dedicated staff working to advance the rights of young people across New York and beyond. The NYCLU seeks a data analyst to conduct research and help us use data to better understand and improve public schools and institutions that serve young New Yorkers. The person in this position will work collaboratively with members of the Education Center team, including attorneys, organizers, and high school and college students. They will also join a growing team of data and research professionals in the organization.

In 2022-23, we are undertaking an original research study on school safety. During the contract period, the data analyst will spend most of their time on this project, ideally in a leadership role.

ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Under the supervision of the Education Center Director or designee, assist in developing and conducting original research on education issues;
• Extract and transcribe relevant data and information from records and prepare them for analysis;
• Clean, code, format, and prepare data files for analysis;
• Create data visualizations;
• Research additional relevant information;
• Distill key findings into memos and presentations;
• Assist in developing Freedom of Information requests for public records and data files;
• Assist in managing data and document productions received as a result of those requests or through investigation, discovery, or compliance monitoring;
• Draft declarations in support of litigation;
• Assist on other projects and tasks as assigned.

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in the social sciences or any subject area with a strong understanding of social science research methodology;
• 1-2 years of professional experience or an advanced degree with substantial experience in social science research methodology;
• Demonstrated experience using MS Excel and a code-based analytical program (like R Studio or STATA) to manage data, conduct statistical analysis, generate reports and create graphs;
• Strong oral and written communication skills;
• Excellent time management and organizational skills, with the ability to efficiently manage multiple projects simultaneously with consistency and accuracy;
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively;
• Demonstrated commitment to civil liberties and civil rights, diversity, equity and inclusion.

Additional Qualifications (preferred, but not required) :

• Experience writing, conducting, and analyzing surveys;
• Experience with data management and analysis, particularly in the context of public interest work;
• Experience collecting and working with administrative data, particularly data from government agencies (especially education-related government agencies);
• Experience conveying research findings to audiences with varying levels of data fluency;
• Professional experience at a public interest or social justice organization or in the field of education;
• Experience supervising or delegating tasks to others;
• Experience with data visualization or graphic design.
