Emerging Seller Risk Strategy team is seeking a senior manager in Global Seller domain. The successful candidate will be responsible for identifying opportunities to reduce merchandize losses & improve accuracy of seller risk actions for PayPal’s global portfolio of Emerging sellers, who represent, our smallest and most promising merchants, and use a variety of PayPal’s payment processing products.
This role requires comfort with multiple data platforms, complex series of risk events spread out over account, transaction, and dispute lifecycles. Being a strong communicator and relationship manager is critical to success as a wide variety of stakeholders are needed to run the business.

Global Seller Risk team is responsible for financial losses and operational expenses driven by poorly performing sellers in the PayPal ecosystem. The team works closely with a variety of stakeholders to balance impacts driven by bad buyer and bad seller experiences, such as merchandize losses and operational expenses needed to manage contacts from buyers and sellers, process disputes & chargebacks, and to vet merchants through manual and automated ways and revenue impact caused by seller and buyer churn. This team closely partners with Global Fraud Risk team who are responsible for mitigating fraud within PayPal ecosystem.

Scope of responsibilities include

  • Leading team of data scientists who are collectively responsible for financial losses due to merchandise reasons & bad buyer and seller experience, degree of friction experienced by sellers, and operational cost of bad buyer and seller experience.
  • Close partnership with Seller Risk teams responsible for similar KPIs for larger merchants ranging from Mid-Sized Sellers to very Large Enterprises
  • Partnership with Global Fraud Risk team responsible for mitigating fraud at the PayPal wallet level as well as specific types of fraud associated with selling activities within the PayPal ecosystem.
  • Close partnership with stakeholders such as Modeling, Seller Risk Platform, Seller Risk Operations, Global Fraud Risk, Business Intelligence, Governance and Oversight partners, Risk & Platforms Leadership, to just list a few of our critical partners.

Functional skills

  • Designs and develops programs methods, processes and systems to consolidate and analyze big data
  • Creates and introduces new analytic tools, methods, processes, systems and capabilities to apply to broad practices
  • Works on projects that may be unstructured and exploratory in nature, that requires a high level of theoretic as well as practical expertise in one or more specialized technical fields
  • Uses a wide range of previous experience, internal and external technologies, and advanced concepts to solve complex technical challenges in creative and effective ways
  • Proven track record as an effective leader, coach and mentor of a talented pool of analysts, who engages teams with a clear sense of purpose and enthusiasm
  • Ability to combine technical expertise and business acumen to create business value
  • Ability to collaborate and represent seller risk needs amongst cross-functional teams working on aggressively growing PayPal’s market share and revenue, greater levels of fraud & macroeconomic pressures from supply chain complications notwithstanding

Business Acumen

  • Expert understanding of seller and dispute lifecycle and leading and lagging loss performance indicators
  • Comfort with trade-offs between accuracy vs. speed of risk actions, appropriateness for human intervention vs. automated controls in a given situation
  • Experience in an online marketplace or ecommerce platform, payment processor, online lender or bank is a significant advantage, but not a must have.

This individual’s key performance KPIs will include Merchandise losses, Good Seller action rate, Seller Contact Rate, Revenue/Margin enabled, and Customer Experience.

Required Skills:

  • Proficiency in SQL and Excel
  • Proficiency in at least one statistical analysis tool: SAS / R / Python
  • Experience with and proficiency in technical skills and programming language like Java/C/C++; scripting language like Perl/Python; strong UNIX background; working knowledge of Hadoop, Map-Reduce, Hive, Pig, R, Jupyter Notebooks; data warehouse skills
  • Strong analytical skills: ability to build quick estimates using back-of-the-envelope analysis, structure complex analyses, pull together business cases, navigate multi-dimensional sets of tradeoffs.
  • Ability to manage a large, diverse set of to-dos’ – prioritize, stay on top of multiple work streams, monitor progress
  • Ability to work with senior leadership & diverse stakeholders to define project scope and direction, driving large and complex pieces of the work independently
  • Knowledge and experience in internal and external business processes and data, systems and flows, as well as analytic tools, processes, and methodologies, solutions to drive technological advancement in the area of responsibility. Demonstrates broad knowledge in adjacent areas
  • Strong communication skills – a sense of appropriate communication mechanism/approach to use given context/circumstances.
  • Experience working with cross-functional, geographically distributed teams, managing through influence is a must-have
  • Ability to contribute to strategic discussions and represent Risk/Fraud in cross-functional meetings
  • Ability to mentor junior team members
  • Dedicated, proactive, curious and eager to learn new approaches / methodologies – a must

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Operations Research, Finance, Economics or related quantitative discipline

    Bachelor’s degree in related STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, Computer Science or Mathematics). Advanced degree preferred. Economics and Statistics experience also preferred. MS/MBA or PhD degree can qualify for some years of experience

    10+ years’ experience in Financial Risk/Credit or Fraud risk/Analytics or related area

    3-5 years’ experience managing and building teams
