Senior Software Engineer (Traffic) - Platform & Services

Job Description

Not long ago, Discord was but a young child in the tech world. In the few brief years it has existed it has grown to a service handling millions of requests per second. How we manage traffic needs to grow to meet these challenges. We’re increasing the reliability of our services by moving to multi-zone while maintaining ultra-fast user latency, and multi-region to improve user latency. What you'll do

• Participate in building and running a distributed, worldwide, real-time system that processes millions of events per second
• Design, build, and operate infrastructure that efficiently and securely routes traffic to and between services at scale (i.e. Discord’s service mesh)
• Architect efficient and creative solutions to scale our backend systems
• Operate essential 24x7 production services
• You will report to the Engineering Manager of the Platform & Services team.

What you should have

• 4+ years experience building scalable backend systems
• Solid understanding of inter-service routing, load balancing, DNS, and confidence explaining the story of how a user request reaches a service running in the cloud. Or a strong interest in learning about the domain.
• Experience debugging a live production system
• Experience working with a cloud provider (e.g. GCP, AWS, Azure)
• Experience working on large-scale systems in Python, Go, Elixir/Erlang, or other similar languages.

Bonus Points

• Experience with Kubernetes, Terraform, GRPC, Envoy and a control plane (e.g. Istio, Linkerd, Traffic Director)
• Experience with SRE best practices; monitoring, alerting, incident response
• Experience with Python or Rust
