As a SRE engineer in Time Shifted & Alternate Content Video Engineering Group, you will help to shape the next generation cloud based, highly scalable DVR & Alternate Content services. You will develop the software & procedures to help reduce operational toil and increase reliability of these platforms and develop tools to operate such large-scale system at low cost.Job Description
Who will you work with?
Time Shifted & Alternate Content Video SRE engineers collaborate with industry experts from many fields: software architects/developers, network engineers, big data scientists, player developers, operations engineers, content security specialists, and various streaming video technologists. They will also engage with quality assurance engineers, technical operators, and product owners daily. We’re a small team, delivering software and procedures to reduce toil and ensure streamlined operational readiness.
What are some exciting problems you’ll be working on as an SRE Engineer?
One of the core products in our scope is the Rio platform. SRE supports the development and ops teams working on next generation cloud DVR system (cDVR). Comcast developed this system from the ground up. It is a large-scale system that supports millions of customers to record their favorite TV shows in the cloud and watch their recordings from any device, at anytime, and anywhere with an Internet connection.
Another product that is in our scope is the Alternate Content Platform. SRE supports the development and ops teams working on IP Linear Video Signal Processing, specifically focused on advertising and sports content. It is the responsibility of the Alternate Content team to "normalize" this video content to drive multifaceted ad insertion and sports content, tailored from large markets to individual viewers, across the Comcast footprint and that of our various content delivery partners around the world. Our IP linear video solutions perform this normalization and content switching in real time for millions of viewers, requiring scalable solutions across dozens of international data centers. Ad delivery alone is a growing $2 billion dollar Comcast business that hinges on the success of the Alternate Content team.
Where can you make an impact?
Your engineering work will be geared towards more stable, more scalable, more operable platforms. Toil and manual task elimination, along with reliability metrics and reporting for both operations and senior leadership will be a primary focus. Reduction in MTTM (Mean Time to Mitigate) and improvements in operational automation will also be a prime initiative in this role.
