Job Description

HuffPost is a subsidiary of BuzzFeed, Inc.

As part of our esteemed news organization, HuffPost is a leading source of award-winning news and commentary for the most diverse and connected generation ever— with reporting spanning across politics, lifestyle, entertainment and more. HuffPost believes in putting people before power and telling the stories that too often go unheard, from the voices that matter.

The Role

HuffPost is looking for an accurate, fast editor to handle line and copy edits across the site, reviewing text, video scripts and social media content. This is a unique opportunity to work with a variety of reporters and subject areas.

Ideal candidates will be comfortable editing breaking news, enterprise stories, lifestyle articles and in-depth features. This position will require editing a broad range of text and visual materials, so editors should have a wide knowledge base and be a quick study.

As HuffPost’s last line of defense, these editors do more than fix basic grammar issues. They help reporters reframe and restructure stories as needed and serve as a critical final set of eyes on every story HuffPost publishes.

This position will work Tuesday through Saturday until at least 8 p.m. Eastern.

You Will

  • Edit stories from across all sections of HuffPost
  • Edit breaking news, liveblogs, push alerts and video scripts
  • Write headlines, decks and social media copy
  • Assist with photo selection and ensure stories are visually appealing
  • Coach reporters on how to reframe or restructure pieces as needed
  • Be part of a team that serves as a newsroom resource for questions about style and standards
  • Be passionate about HuffPost’s mission and maintaining a consistent voice for the site
  • Serve as a mentor and sounding board for reporters

Part of what makes BuzzFeed, Inc. a pioneer in digital media is our commitment to exploring new ventures that lead to spreading truth and joy. As such, you may be asked to share your knowledge with your colleagues through presentations or trainings, to screen and interview job candidates, or to take part in recruitment or networking events on behalf of the company and be part of a union.

You Have

  • Impeccable news judgment and high editorial standards
  • An expert command of grammar and AP Style
  • The ability to make bigger-picture fixes to stories beyond basic copy edits
  • Comfort with writing headlines and social copy
  • Breaking news experience or a strong willingness to learn
  • A willingness to work with reporters of all skill levels
  • An excitement to work on stories of all types — from hard news investigations to quick viral pieces
  • A level head and the ability to make tough editorial decisions in high-pressure situations

This position is in the WGA-E bargaining unit.
