What we do

The Search API & Infrastructure team at Mapbox owns scaling the Search APIs, Data Stores, and building new platform services that other Search teams across Mapbox can leverage to increase their feature development velocity. We make it possible for Search services such as Address Search, Point-of-interest search, and Places search to easily consume APIs and infrastructure that power billions of search requests from thousands of customers and hundreds of millions of end-users every month.

We work on developing the Search platform built on a foundation of ElasticSearch and AWS, and powers the development of high performance and low latency search algorithms in Search services.

All in all, this team works on an exciting mix of platform engineering, APIs for search and information retrieval algorithms, and problems in-between in order to support Search at a high-scale.

What you’ll do

As a Senior Software Engineer on the Search API & Infrastructure team, you’ll be responsible for, and expected to:

• Design & implement key parts of the Search platform that can support low latency and high throughput requirements of Search services
• Develop APIs and service level abstractions that can improve developer experience across Mapbox by reducing development time, improving Search platform scalability, reliability and Availability
• Write, debate, and implement technical design documents through the search organization
• Work across teams to improve Search and Mapbox holistically
• Mentor other Search API and Infrastructure engineers

What we believe are important traits for this role

• Experience in modern programming languages (JS, Rust, C++, Go, Java)
• Experience with high scale platforms (billions of requests per month)
• Proficiency in implementing monitoring instrumentation, operational diagnostics, resolving customer issues, and continuous product improvement.
• Experience in solving challenging Infrastructure problems.
• A desire to work with individuals with diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences.
• Enthusiasm for learning and knowledge sharing in a multidisciplinary environment, supported by mentorship experience and strong written and verbal communication skills.
• A rigorous approach to problem solving, using experiments and data analysis to drive quality of service improvements.
• Experience with search engines such as ElasticSearch, Solr, Lucene
